Souvlaki's been in Greece for more than 4000 years. Gyro can refer to any of those pita sandwiches, or it can refer to the doner kebab cooking method, which is relatively more recent. That's the kind on a vertical spit, where you shave it off while it's cooking. Shawarma & al pastor are both cooked that way too.

Hello everyone since i didnt notice any Greek comment i will start!
Traditional Gyro aka ''souvlaki'' in Athens ''pitogyro'' at Thessaloniki is made with pork and after some years with chichen too, tomato, raw red onions, tzatziki and after a while just like chichen they started putting in potatos too. Falafel was never a tradional greek gyros in my knowlege, im guessing what you have there is called ''rebidokefte'' which is a tradittional greek dish made of falafel and the name refersh to litterally ''a ball of falafel''. Its super nice but you will not find it in a ''Gyradiko'' (gyro restaurant) 90% of the time.

Never seen it cooked on a spit here, in restaurants here it's usually pan fried and served either in a pita or as part of a platter. Rebidokefte sounds good though.

Awesome pronunciation on the gyros! As a greek fellow, I have to note that I have never had falafel in gyros and while it's certainly not authentic, it seems super tasty and a great variation. Overall really happy you enjoyed this. (Fun fact, these sandwiches would be considered small in greece)
*edit: we also eat them with the wrapper as that's what holds them together. It's generally considered street food and the wrapper is the only thing preventing the food from being too messy to eat on the streets lol

The pork you had is what we in greece call "souvlaki". Pork pieces skewered and cooked over coals. It is a pretty common ingridient of our wrps but it's not gyros. Real gyros is what you described

Falafel is a middle eastern thing. Us Greeks don’t eat it and never have. Falafel gets tossed interchangeably for some reason with Greek cuisine along with tabouli and cous cous and all that. That’s more Arabic/Mid East. But it’s yummy when done right. You’d lose your mind in Greece with eating their real version of pork gyros. It’s so good there in Greece, night and day 😀

I am Jordanian (Middle Eastern) and falafel is the food of the middle east there is egyptian falafel, jordanian falafel, etc. It is just fried ground and smushed up chickpea's. The egyptians tend to have it flatter than us jordanians.

Skewered meat like the pork one you got is an authentic meat choice for gyros also known as souvlaki both names referring to the meat (gyros for the thinly cut pieces and souvlaki literally meaning skewer). Falafel is on the other hand is not traditional even though some modern gyros places might have the option. I have to say that the gyros you got look pretty close to what you'll get in Greece especially the pork one.

The trick to eating it neater without the whole thing falling apart is don’t keep playing with it, keep it in the wrapper, hold it firmly in place, don’t keep putting it down. 😂😂😂😂 Do that and it will eat much better!

Falafel is made of garbanzos or fava beans w cumin and corriander some cayenne parsley n salt.
Too many recipes. Its middle eastern.,,but as alot of foods are..many countries will claim they made the oeiginal. My theory is to accept all the recipes n appreciate them all. Its yes its super healthy!

I am a Greek and every time I see a gyros review from someone abroad they never get it right. Gyros is originally a sandwich consisted by gyros pita tomato onion A LOT OF French fries ketchup mustard and any other sauce you prefer. Souvlaki on the other hand is not the sandwich,its skewered pork bites along with the skewer. The sandwich has been called souvlaki just by some idiots here in Greece

There is Pita Gyros (gyros standing for rotating meat) and there is Pita Souvlaki (souvlaki means skewers).
