  • Bamburgh castle is an iconic fortress overlooking the North Sea on the rugged coast of Northumberland. Its history dates back to the 6th century when it served as a Saxon fort. Originally the capital of the kingdom of Bernica, it became a target for both the Vikings and Normans thanks to its strategic importance. Today it stands as a symbol of English heritage, thanks to the restoration works of the Armstrong family, as well as being the setting for the Netflix hit The Last Kingdom, based on the Bernard Cornwell novels following Uhtred of Bebbanberg during the reign of Alfred the Great, as Vikings and Anglo Saxons fought to control England...
With special thanks to the Bamburgh Research Project. Their remarkable dedication and expertise has greatly enriched our knowledge of this historic site. Thank you for sharing this with us and the world :)

Gav & Jo, this was excellent! WOW, is all I can say, what a powerhouse Bamburgh is! Would absolutely love to visit there especially after watching this excellent video!! It was absolutely fascinating to listen to Lauren and hear her explain about the coin hoard, so so interesting! & see inside that grand hall, what a place. Thank you both, inspiring!

A great blend of Gavin's castles and arms and armour expertise, Jo's historical knowledge and the film maker's wonderful photography. The drone shots really show off the true scale of this spectacular building.
I used to think of Bamburgh as a largely Victorian/Edwardian re creation. How wrong I was! The archaeological dig is shedding light on the much longer history of the site.
Would have liked the video to end with Gavin and Jo on horseback galloping along the beach with the castle as a backdrop!
Makes me want to go there, and, I guess, that's the real purpose of your videos. Well done GVC team.

My mother is a Norwegian!! I am 74%. My mother’s lineages are related to the royals today and the past far back!!
On my father’s side William the conqueror is my grandfather, way great. Also Charlemagne is long distance grandfather on my fathers side.
I do have royal blood on both side but not raised as one. Just a farmer!! Lol!!
    Lots of love from Tennessee!!!

There were NO Saxon kings in Northumbria. It was the Angles and the Frisians who were in Northumbria. The Saxons were in the south. Do Sussex, Essex, Wessex not ring a bell?

I get where you are coming from, I would suggest Edwin, who married Æthelburh, a Princess from Kent. Though Æthelfrith was the first Anglo-Saxon leader to hold lands north and south.

    Saxon Kings of Northumbria?
    Total Fail.
Go back and read some history.
