I grew up in Levin, (1960 model) I vaguely remember steam engines. But mostly the Diesel engines pulling canvas covered wagons of goods. Also the Blue and Silver streak rail cars which stopped at the little pick up platform at Queen street up until the early 1970’s. I’ve been on the ‘Auckland’ train a couple of times but only the over night train so I never saw the “the spiral”.
Well blimey, a nice look at what almost seems like another country.
Sitting at the train platform in National park and this came popped up…. It’s a magnificent trip thru this area in winter. Thanks for posting this.
National Park as I remember it almost 60 years ago. Another country indeed.
Both steam and diesel. Nice
Not in 1908

Man, that waterfront keeps changing...
Back when NZ railways was in the business of moving things, no matter how small and no matter where to.
When Steam was King 🤴

And how much did it cost and when did we finally pay it off ?
