Im just getting into millipedes so this was interesting for me as i want to give my gaint and olive millipedes best home i can so much appreciated thankyou for making it 😊
Just found your channel and videos! This mix sounds great and I’m hoping to try it out this week. I’m starting new isopod tubs after a bit of a break. And then we will be making some display terrariums and bioactive enclosures. I picked up some Apple wood pellets and a fresh bag of organic soil at HD. I do feel a bit cautious… says “all natural” and doesn’t use binder or chemicals… is this what I should look for? Any brands that you do/dont recommend? Thanks again!
I actually use my isopods for my terrarium builds (they're also pretty good as clean up in my mantis nymph containers as all my animals are in bioactive setups unlike a lot of breeders that keep them in cups >.
Thanks for this! I also live in the city so I can’t really get wood from outside anywhere so I gotta buy it for my millipede but I had no idea you could use wood pellets
Yeah, just make sure there is variation. Also check out our website, we also have Magnolia leaves you could buy - you want some variation, so I wouldnt just feed them only the wood pellets
You wont need to change the substrate, just add occasional foods like butternut squash (organic) and add in occasionally rotting wood or broken down pellets again and you'll be fine. Make sure also to add springtails to whatever youre adding to lower mold in the enclosure - it fruiting is good but it can get in the way and consume some of the food,, so best to keep it down
The hardwoods in that blend are totally fine - that being said, when in doubt - don't when it comes to Duckies. That being said, my duckies were totally fine with it. I just dont want hundreds of dollars in duckies dying and you saying "BUT YOU SAID!" 🤣
It will be the number 1 hit on the Top 100 Billboard for six weeks in a row, and then my reign will end by a 19 year old pop star who sings a song about struggle.
Amazing video! Super informative! I havent had a chance to thoroughly watch through this video a second time, so perhaps i missed this, but how frequently should you be changing out your substrate? Does the frequency change between a colony of isopods, vs a giant african millipede, vs like, 3-4 bumblebees or ivorys? How about with vs without springtails? Thanks again for the tutorial! (Ive asked elsewhere, but have since found your mold vid and this video, so figured id drop a comment here) Thanks again! Great stuff :)
I never change out substrate, just add to it until the substrate becomes too big for the box, then I carefully remove substrate, then sanitize it via deep freeze once I ensure that nothing is living in it. I just add in high nutrient vegetation to ensure it goes back into the soil.

You are so very welcome!

Update… I found your notes! 🤦♀️ I did pick up that brand but picked Apple. So looks like it’s experiment time!
If you use Traegars pellets, they ONLY use hardwoods. I personally use their signature blend as its cherry, maple and hickory blended together!

For the sake of space, I keep my mantids in modified AMAC boxes, but if I had my way, Id have a similar setup for SURE!

Hong long will the food in the substrate last? Do we need to change it ?

This soil is good for ducky’s right? Or is the flavored hardwood not good?

Does the moss need sunlight?
If you want the moss to live, you can use artificial lights and they dont need much, or you can let the living moss die.
Also we gotta produce that panda king song

Can you use sawdust?
By itself? No. And depends on what kind of sawdust. As long as its a hardwood, its fine. Avoid firs, pines, etc
