Review of Land Rover Defender 110 Camper Build (14 Months Around the World)

- After traveling 14 months and 55.000 km, we are reviewing our Land Rover Defender Camper build. We crossed three continents and experienced freezing winter nights, brutally hot deserts, and humid rainforests.
Two years ago as we decided to go on a World trip we looked at our Land Rover Defender Td5 and started planning an interior that supports living in this not-so-big car for several months. The goal was to maximize storage space and water capacity, as well as have everything we need daily easily accessible and make as light as possible.
Looking back we can say we achieved most of it, and the choices we made paid off. We drove 55.000 km without a breakdown, and we only had to do smaller repairs and maintenance.

Historically, I would find this extremely dull. I am a nurse not an engineer, but Kai did a great presentation that it captured my interest and attention so much that I found myself super intrigued. Nice camera work Irati. The double mount of the solars was brilliant. It helps to have a couple of engineers in the family!
Thank you so much this is a huge compliment, I’m glad that I could make it interesting for you 😊
solution for seat inside get memory foam cushions
For us is my more about the straightness of the bench. A tilted back rest would be better and a deeper sitting cushion. But space is limited and we worked with what we have 🤷♀️
Blue Landy is a champion. I am sure she is right for the next fifty thousand kilometres of adventure.
Hey Graham, Fingers crossed. But I’m with you I strongly believe she is fit!
Really interesting! Thanks! Am taking nuggets of inspiration for our travels in the future! Looking forward to following you further on your travels! All the best!
Thank you glad we can inspire you. If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask!
If you move the water from let side towards the right side of the car. That creates an open space to fit heating components if you can for reduced weight combined for water tank to center the car.
Our heater is below the cubby box (center console) and the silencer is in the small box on the bottom of the big furniture. So no Need for more heating 😜.
Maybe another battery, options are endless. 😅
If you put airbags in the rear coils then you could adjust the pressure for the varying weights on each side.
We have Airbag Man airbags in the rear of our 110, mainly for towing our caravan, and they are excellent.
Re mosquitoes, you can buy mosquitoes screens with Velcro which can be dropped over each opening. We use one at our home.
That’s a great Idea would love to give them a try.
We thought about adding a screen in the back but we constantly open all the doors and we thought they would be in the way all the time. But we might just try it in the future
what model engine do you have - 10p,15p or 19p ?
really enjoy your channel and am a landy fan
Hey, we got the 10P
Thank you so much 😊
Great video! Same here: we drove from Berlin along the Silkroad to Usbekistan in 2019 and had the same issues with the Lifesaver Jerry Can. The concept is great but the leaking tap, especially when sitting on its side was very annoying- even when not pressurized. I hope Lifesaver will find a solution. Best wishes for your upcoming journey!!
Uhh so jealous, we originally went out to drive this route and continue to Japan. But this sadly was not possible anymore. One day we’ll do it!
I send Lifesaver a design to implement a ball valve (Kugelventil) but they ignored it. I’ll have it made as soon as we come to workshop that can do it. I’ll let you know how it works.
Thank you 😊 & Grüße nach Berlin
Nice video. It’s easy to laugh at Land Rovers and their reliability, but as you say, one breakdown after so many KMs with a 24 year old car… Impressive. Lucky it happened where it did though 😆
The word "kai" means food in polynesian/Maori.
Hey Bert, I know, it means ocean in Hawaii 😉
Kai, what are the dimensions for the cupboards and couch
Hey, it's roughly: 35cm high, 55cm wide, and 105cm long.
Thank you
What a great video of your rig to date on its epic journey that you both are on . Informative and entertaining at the same time thanks for sharing your thoughts on your set up to date and it’s useage so far . Loved the ending recap of were you have been so far on this great adventure you are sharing with us all your over landing friends . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :) :) 🌍🍻👍🏼😁 .

Thanks again for keeping us glued to the screen and I'm still hopeful one day you will come back to East Africa and especially Kenya as there are so many beautiful places to discover. All the best on the Americas trips as we eagerly waiting for those videos.
So glad you enjoy the videos! Maybe we’ll be back in Kenya one day. But there are so many beautiful places to discover on this planet that you never know where it is going to draw you next 😅
@@Thebluelandy wherever please stay safe and keep those videos coming, all the best to you again.
Is that the 10p Td5 engine?
Yeah it’s a 10P
Hi
Hey!! 😎
18.13 a Toyota pulling a Land Rover Defender out of the mud...absolutelley Classic! LOL 🤣
Happens cause the Toyotas stay always on the save ground 😂
Hi guys. Really enjoyable video. Many interesting things to see here. The battery setup is particularly interesting. Couple of questions if that's ok. I assume the batteries are in parallel so 160 amper hours? I wonder about the alternator, is it possible you could put too much load on it if the batteries go low?
I think your setup is a great testimonial for the defender, gives me hope for my 89 110 with a 200tdi.....
Hey Kerryman, you are Right a normal generator / alternator is not built to charge big battery banks. And this is not ideal. But due to the fact that the solar is doing 90% of the work, and in a normal day we reduce alternator load there, the solar is even during driving assisting the alternator. We basically only use the alternator in a bad weather scenario, and we try to avoid bad weather as good as it goes. The hole car is not really built for more than 3 days of rain.
Remember we cook outside 😉
I’m sure you’re 200 tdi will do a great job aswell, just listen to it and localize new noises before something breaks 😂
Regarding the uncomfortable sofa, you can just make a sliding bench for let say 15 cm, that will allow to incline the back puffs. You can even make a sliding folding bench, the upper part of which will "automatically" be a inclined back. And it will saves the space of course.)))
That’s a good idea thank you so much 😊 I’m I’ll check how I could implement that!
Great video Kai. Thanks for sharing your videos. Know we can get a lot of tips for our build next year. 🥂👋🇿🇦
Hey Gary, you are welcome! If you have questions in detail don’t hesitate to ask! Her or on insta 😉
Good luck in South America. Looking forward to the videos that follow !!

All good sound advice there Kai. A lot of great tips ,for other off roaders.
Thanks you Dave!
Love your videos. Thank you.
Hey Craig, thangs you glad to hear you like it
To prevent leaking, I always remove the pressure from the tank after usage
Hey, thanks for the hint, that’s what we’re doing and we’re still experiencing leaks every once in a while
@@Thebluelandy ok. No leaking issues on our side
Only in a Defender !! Love it. Go well !
You are so right, only in a Defender 😍
Some fantastic thoughts from this one ... As regards the lean I'd simply buy handed springs and switch the sides. We run right hand drive here but I think a chat with the likes of OME might get you where you need to go.
Hey, I’m not sure if I get this right, as far as I remember is the longest spring the one left back… are you saying the right hand drive spring on the right side is even longer?
I was thinking about custom springs. But those are super expensive…
@@Thebluelandy So in the UK the drivers side springs are slightly heavier duty. This changed in the later setups. Hence you can mix and match spring setups should the need arise. They used to do this a lot after the Camel Trophy challenges when the Special Vehicles department took over the unusual specification requests including the Gold overland specs Sir Ranulf Feines opted for that never quite made it. I would opt for OME or the equivalent these days as Land Rover OEM isn't at all what it used to be 👍
That’s really good to know! Thank you so much I’ll give it a try. We have OEM but the springs out of the 130to get a slight lift
@@Thebluelandy If you can check the colour stripes you'll know what to deal with. Either that or you go to the likes of Old Man Emu and ask for advice.
