I found that the comments provided more info than the video so thank you to those who provided comments info. The video gave me enough info to consider something I had not thought of before with screen captures but left me with more questions than answers.

Something the viewers might also consider but was not mentioned, is that the PNG files are slightly larger and take a little longer to load on a web page versus the JPG. I you are making a Power Point presentation or a Google Slide presentation too many PNG's may slow the loading of the presentation down.

My general rule is a rectangular photo, JPG (JPEG) is fine. If the image is a graphic element, such as icons or logo, PNG is best since it won't introduce artifacts. IMO, screen captures should be PNG to prevent artifacts around type glyphs.

The file save default for Windows appears to be "set" by whatever was used as the previous Save As file type. If you save as a PDF, the next time you save it will default to PDF. If you change it to save as PNG, the next time you Save As will default to PNG. I'm taking a stab in the dark based on what I'm seeing on my version 2022.02 install.

Congrats to Brendon Ross for correct answer above. Repeated here: In the Editor, click Share\Save As Preferences, then in the pop up window, choose "Remember last used format", or "Always use this format" and choose from the file type list for your default.

@@BruceAvilla The way he showed me was:
      1. Start a capture
      2. Select the capture area
      3. Click on the Capture an image camera icon
      4. Click on the Capture button top left hand of capture window
      5. Make sure Image is selected on the left and in the Share dropdown menu select File
      6. Click the gear icon to change this to save in a specific format after capturing - choose Portable Network Graphic (PNG)
      7. When you go to save it will save it as a PNG

The settings are for Mac only. You need to at least specify that, or better, provide all features in the Mac with Windows. If it just isn't available in Windows because of OS limitation, you need to state that. The UX's need to be better matched btw.

Great idea, setting the default file format for captures. However, I cannot find where to set this. It's described as "Open Status Preferences" (at least that's what it sounds like)_ but I cannot find that menu anywhere. Opening the "Snagit Capture Preferences" from the Capture WIdget, there are General, Capture, and Hotkeys tabs. None of them offered the choice of output file formats. It's just not specified sufficiently. Searching through all of the help files reveals nothing about this. So... how do I find it?
OK, just got off a chat with someone there and he walked me through finding it. In your videos, you've got to be more specific in finding these kind of things. When talking about using a menu, you can't assume the audience knows how to get to it.

JPG is going to be smaller and load faster, however it really doesn't matter if you've already used a PNG since once you've uploaded your thumbnail to UA-cam they have processes in the background to compress it for faster load times anyway.

Should have included the fact that everything is better about PNG except for the fact that not enough people are using it, resulting in PNG not being as accepted as the standard; JPEG. You kind of just brought up PNG being lossless and transparency and said people should use JPEG for family photos without explaining why but the size of a PNG file is so impressive compared to JPEG that this factor should have been center stage. You could have made this a selling point for PNG since we really should update to a new standard. Also, you should probably have explained what lossless versus lossy means eg artifacts and file degredation with each transfer.

This tells us almost nothing about png and jpg formats, Admittedly if you should compress the content of this clip to half a byte where the two first bits represent jpg and the two last bits represent png and within each pair the first bit is lossy and the second is has alpha channel (i.e. this clip could be substituted with 1001) that is probably the most important difference, Delivering half a byte of information in 3 minutes is slightly ironical in the view of the technological progress that made youtube and the rest of the framework necessary for this clip possible.

Not everything in the world is digital. If you're printing an image in traditional, physical media, png won't work. It has to be jpg (or tif or psd or eps). The color and resolution of a png file won't be retained in print.

    • @davidcreamer8228
      @davidcreamer8228 2 роки тому

That's not accurate. PNGs _can_ save resolution and they can be used for print if the page layout program. PNGs are RGB or grayscale but can be converted to CMYK upon output. Color conversion would be based on one's color settings. That said, PNGs would not be my first choice for a strictly print document, but if creating a FXL EPUB and a print PDF from the same document, they will work.
