    To my knowledge, this is the only scene in the original trilogy that Mark hated. The creature wasn't evil. Just hungry. But Luke also wasn't evil. He was just frightened for his life and really didn't have time to weigh his options. It's just nature.

    The updated version isn't that bad. Normally I'm not a fan of showing the monster but considering the scene, it does make the wampa look pretty scary, considering that its mouth is dripping in blood. The only thing I would really change is the wampa with the missing arm. It kind of looked a little goofy. Like a muppet losing an arm(which it kind of was but still).

Also, when the wampa isn't fully shown it doesn't give me chills, since we don't know where it is. With the Wampa fully shown, it really feels like she's right there, so the moment becomes far more nervous.

      The blue comes from 2004 DVD. The 1997 Special Edition had already some blue because it had bad color correction. In 2004, they messed up the color correction for the DVD and the blue hue is a color error from 2004 DVD and as the Blu-ray uses the 2004 DVD Release, the blue stays. Unlike the GOUT DVD which is from 1993 LaserDisc. Disney+ fixed the colors.

    I don't understand why people get mad about the color temperature change in subsequent editions. Lowering the color temp emphasizes the atmosphere of the scene, it visually conveys the coldness in a way a neutral color temperature cannot. For example, look at the Grindhouse print, the colors may be changed due to faulty preservation and color fading, but it almost has a warm temperature to me, emphasizing the yellow tones in the shot which is a little emersion breaking imo

      The problem is that’s not how it looked when it was filmed and originally exhibited. Or at least I think that is the case. The 2006 DVDs weren’t perfect and not much effort went into restoring/remastering (they’re straight up ports from the 1990s laserdiscs) but I would imagine they’re at least close to the color timing of the originals?
      The whole revisionist color grading to a more modern steely blue is a really shitty trend that’s been pushed not just by the studios but also by directors who should know better (James Cameron, Michael Mann, to name two).

  • @TheArctofireHD
    @TheArctofireHD 2 роки тому +10

    I actually prefer the special edition version, as it increases the tension of the scene to know that the Wampa is directly walking towards Luke, ready to kill him unless he recovers his lightsaber in time, as opposed to in the original where the Wampa is not looking directly at him, and there only being the off-chance that Luke might make too much noise and draw attention to himself.
    I honestly don't mind the special editions at all on their own, but people should have the option to watch either the special editions or the original unaltered versions in equal resolution, as the original versions are part of cinema history. Then, it would simply become a matter of personal preference. As for Empire Strikes Back, I actually find myself quite liking all of the changes aside from Boba Fett's voice change, though I prefer the unaltered versions for ANH and ROTJ.

The Special Editions for the other movies contain pointless stuff like Greedo shooting first, Jabba meeting Han, Jedi Rocks, etc. I would have cut a lot of it, including the scene where Leia meets Wicket, and use these resources to make a practical Gorax, or some other creature in Endor, that explains why the Ewoks can hold their own against the Empire.

The 2011 scene well , the Wampa looks stupid and that's not creepy at all, that's just a little embarrassing and when he walk to Luke, the suspense is literally gone. But that's my opinion.

    As most know, Lucas claims the special editions were how he originally “envisioned” the films being if he had the money and time to add more. If anything, this shows it actually kills the immersion of the film as it takes away the suspense and horror of what terrible monster has caught Luke. If anything, all he needed to add was the last shot of the wampa missing it’s arm to show it’s defeat and lack of intimidation after Luke bested it.

    I saw someone say that this scene was scarier without seeing more of the wampa, but I'd argue the opposite. From Luke's perspective, at least, he's watching this massive hulking beast eating the remains of his faithful tonton with the full knowledge of the fact that failing to escape means he'll be next. The audience misses part of that tension and pressure without seeing what Luke sees.

    How does Lucas consciously change scenes such as this one while going to the trouble of cgi/special effects, and STILL gets details wrong? Showing more of the mysterious and ferocious Wampa was a good change yes, but when Luke cuts off the beast's arm at 1:33, half of the arm, if that, is on the ground and effectively cut off, yet immediately after that in the special edition, we see a gaping shoulder deep wound in the Wampa? It's one thing to put that in the original movie and go OOPS we goofed, but it's another thing entirely to redo the scene, analyze it who knows how many times, and screw it up.

      I disagree. I feel no tension because I have no idea what the creature actually looks like or what fate actually awaits Luke if he can't escape. This isn't like a horror movie where you can build the tension of the creature in various scenes by not showing him, it's one scene that isn't long enough to pull that off. Showing the Wompa and just how intimidating it actually looks adds far more to the scene if you ask me.

Luke at this point had been training to be a Jedi for several years, but he had to stop and really focus to pull the lightsaber to himself. Rey, on the other hand, can pull the lightsaber to herself, against Kylo Ren as he's also trying to pull it, literally hours (at the most a day or two) after learning the force exists, with no training whatsoever.
