Me too! I planted the first of my seedlings today.
Just purchased 2 Jujube trees, 1 persimmon tree and 16 strawberry plants. Can’t wait...I also have all of my seeds ready to go. So happy you guys are 7b, we can keep in touch with updates and advice.

I planted potatoes , onions and strawberries in late january, but in october I planted turnips, spenich, garlic, beets, kale, brokley, onions all up and doing well.
That's fun! We are just a bit too to pull most of those off with out the help of a cold frame. Glad it is working well for you!
7b here. I planted cabbage, brocolli, kale. brussell sprouts, swiss chard, spinach, onion, garlic outside in late fall and all of these overwintered fine with many freezing nights in the 20's. My parsley is fine from last spring planting. They were snowed on and had freezing rain but did fine.

I have been growing lots of greens indoor either in a sunny window or under lights, things like Tatsoi (grows crazy indoors) kale, Asian cabbage swiss chard perpetual spinach etc. Outside besides hardy greens I have lots of white turnips, I caught my dog digging up and eating radishes Yikes... I am in south Tenn.. I have Jerusalem artichokes I keep under ground and eat as I go. Love your videos, lost several plants bcus of all the rain and want to get back in now. Thanks so much. Great video! I'm always wishing my seedlings were as big as my neighbor's and now I know why! Question on your comments about wet soil. I live in the Pacific NW. It's really wet here, pretty much until June. How can I use this January strategy with wet soils? I have both raised beds and ground plots.
Just be very careful when you are planting in wet soil, work it as little as possible. I know you guys are always wet, so just try to do your best and work it when it is as dry as possible.

Sounds good but it is kind of a pain growing things in the house. I have lettuce growing on my windows right now. Most other stuff is going to have to take it's chances in the yard. I've got onions, kale, parsley, and some herbs outside in various stages. Some left from last summer. Some planted late. Never used a row cover but I guess it is the only sensible way.
Row covers are great this time of year, or even a hoop house or cold frame! I love my winter garden.
I'm trying winter siwing this year, so not an expert but it looks intriguing.
Be nice for a map at beginning of each video showing the Zone areas covered in the video.
Our seasons have been changing for the last several years. We sometimes have our worst weather in January and February.
I've noticed some big changes to our weather patterns the last few years too. Mostly in the form of extra rain in the spring, which is nice for us.
We got snow here in april last year in zone 7b.😫

What about parsnips and rutabagas in zone 7b?
January feels a bit early for those, but if your soil is workable give it a try.
But do not try them indoors. root crops do not transplant well.

Can I start cabbage, brusselsrout etc... in a cold frame outside in January. Zone 7
It might be a little too cold in a cold frame in January to get the seeds to germinate. I prefer to get my cabbage family crops started indoors in about 10-12 weeks before my last frost, and then set them out around 6 weeks before my last frost.
Im in zone 7. Because of warm winter my brocolli and kale from fall are still alive outside. Should I keep them alive and expect growth in Spring?
The Kale will be fine, The stress of the cold might make the broccoli flower and bolt to seed quicker when the weather warms up. But you never know, leave it be and see how it does!!

Thanks! Why is it bad to plant into wet soil?
The plants will drown or rot.
And the wet soil will harden as it dries out around the seeds and make it hard for seeds to break thru. Hope that helps.
Can I start these things on a balcony in one of those plastic covered frame stands? They are labeled greenhouses but I don't know if they really are.
It really depends on how warm it is in your area. I know in my Zone 6 garden we couldn't get away with it in January or February. Those "greenhouses" just don't offer enough protection.

Just found your video. What can I start for a container garden in zone 7a now, 2/29/20? Or, should I not start from seeds?
I will be doing a March planting guide this coming week. Should be done by Friday.

Chrysalis Natural I appreciate your efforts to find something usefully for my area of living and gardening. Unfortunately there is no enough data to identify zones in the way of USA creation. I only have found the “hardiness zone”, it is mostly in the range 9-11 for Croatia. I am not sure I can use your instruction for the same zone numbers ( Gardenia doesn’t give advice regarding vegetables, most of my interest.). Anyway thank you very much for your time and fast respond.

Now some data about my area of living you have just ask for: I live in small country, Croatia, situated opposite of Italy, between us is Adriatic sea. Capital town where I live is in the continent (south Europe), 400 km far from Adriatic sea to north. Last frost is usually around 10-20 of April, the lowest temperature is in December and January about minus 5 Celsius. Sometimes is snowy in December and beginning the year. Summer is hot up to 38 Celsius, in the autumn and in spring usually is pretty rainy. Hope this is enough or ask me for more. Thank you in advance.
I’m in Sacramento. I tried to plant cauliflower in September and the aphids got them🥴 Would they still come during the winter?
It really depends on how cold it gets there. You need freezing temps to kill them.
One good defense against aphids is fabric row cover. Here's an article I wrote about using it to keep pests out. It works well for aphids.

ourstoneyacres I didn’t realize I could just lay the cloth over. I won’t be able to make a sturdy one until summer so I’ll try this for now! Thank you!! In the morning we ice over but then it melts in the morning.
Gardening in South Jersey (Salem County). Just wondering if I can start these indoor without grow lights? Also, it’s been a fairly mild winter so far, who knows what February may hit us with, but do you agree it seems mild enough to start some of those root veggies outside.

Wow, I"m sorry, I'm not sure what to do about that. I'm getting the same thing, but that link is pointing directly to the USDA website so it is a problem with the governments site, not mine.
It says I'm in 7B but you describe 7 like its a colder area but I live in a desert in Oklahoma zip code 73507
7b is pretty warm, but you are still much colder than some areas. But if you are in the desert then you may be able to treat your garden more like a zone 8. Alot depends on when your first and last frost dates are.

If one doesn't have ample space indoors, may a green house be used outside?
It depends on where you live. You need somewhere that the temperatures at night don't drop much below 55. 65 would be even better. If that is your greenhouse in January then you should be fine. But I know in my area it is still too cold at night even with a green house to keep those temps up.

I am a container gardener, I live in an appointment. I live in zone 8a, any recommendations on what to plant?
My patio is pretty shady most of the day and gets a lot of sun in the evening hours.
Greens do well in containers, also you can find container varieties of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and melons.
I'm in zone 8a' When is a good time to sow Dianthus from seeds?

Most of what is on this list are planting indoors, so you will be okay.
Your advice is far too optimistic for those in zone 7a
