Being a native Georgian still in Georgia, the elephant ear plant in a pot is eye opening regarding the differences in our climate. I grew up at the last house on the road that happened to be a hill with a natural spring at the top. The spring ran along the side of the road down a ditch and it attracted all kinds of wildlife and plants. I remember playing in it all the time and when summer was really in full swing we had thousands of elephant ears in several places along the ditch. I guess they grow well in damp swampy areas because unlike a ditch dug to collect and run rain water that would otherwise create huge puddles in the road but would dry up with no rain, our ditch with running spring water was never dry. Glad I clicked on this video. I have a pool being delivered in a few days and I’ve been thinking about the base and the options I have. I have the other components figured out but to me the base is the most important. A harder base makes the bottom of the pool hurt bad lol. Thanks!

GREAT IDEA! Just a little more on the mats themselves…where did you get them? Are they interlocking? Approximately how much per sheet / bundle? Can they be easily cut? Did you have to level anything beforehand? Also but most importantly, being in Michigan, do you break down the pool for the winters? Thanks! Again this is a great idea!
Thank you! I got them at Tractor Supply, you’ll want to check for current pricing. They do not interlock. They can be cut with a good sharp utility knife if needed. Our first pool, I put the mats directly on the grass and that worked fine. With this larger pool, the ground needed to be leveled so sand was put down. I did not take it down for the winter, just winterized and covered.

Hello again I have one more question😬 Is there another base that I can use that’s as simple as this one but just as strong and doesn’t require me digging up my yard? Those mats are expensive!😫😂
Not sure if you already answered this but where did you get your mats? Also, are the pool feet digging through the mats or did you use any pavers underneath? I also live in Michigan and have a 16x48 pool and take it down every Fall. Thanks
I got mine at Tractor Supply. They pushed in slightly being a soft surface, but that’s it. They didn’t continue digging in. I didn’t want the rough corners of pavers against the pool. If you really wanted pavers you could probably cut squares out the mats and lay the pavers in them flush with the mats.

We ended up liking it so much, when we moved we found a house with an in ground pool. It’s all about how much you want to spend and what you want.
Thanks. Your feedback was really helpful. I get it now.@@backyardproblemsolver
Nice job!
Thank you!
I'm prepping the ground for this pool. Was wondering if 1) a 2" slope from edge to edge would be prohitibive?, and 2) is the dimension from pole to pole exactly 18'? Thanks.
Your instructions will say how much of a slope is acceptable and the dimensions for the poles. I’m not sure on those.
Hi from Kentucky, Are the mats directly on your lawn/grass? Or did you prep the ground before laying them down? Also where can I buy these mats?
Hi! The first pool I did was smaller and put them right on the grass, that worked just fine but when I went with a bigger pool I needed the ground leveled. So then we put sand under it. I got the mats at Tractor Supply Co.
@@backyardproblemsolver I’m looking at a 16’- 48” pool. How big was your first pool that you did not prep for and just went directly over the grass?
@@beckyrogers3410 it was 18’ x 48”. But it’s just about how level the area is. At 18’ the drop from one side to the other was negligible, at 22’ it was a little more noticeable. Personally, if the area was level, I’d do mats right on the grass even with a 22’. So it just depends on your situation and what you’re comfortable with.
Is it fully through or just around the edges? $1300 in stall mats?
All the way under the pool.
Did you still use a sand base under the mats?
Initially I put the mats directly on the grass. When we got this larger pool, we had to level anyways so we used sand. The mats worked great with or without sand.
You need to buy a solar cover roller and build a stand for it.
Hello did you just put the mats on top of the grass or did you have to dig?
Hi! With our first pool, I put the mats directly on the grass, that worked just fine. When we went to a larger pool I needed the ground leveled anyway, so sand was brought in.
Thanks so much for responding! How many mats did you use and where did you find them if you don’t mind me asking? I want to buy my kids a 18x48 above ground pool and didn’t know what to use as the base😩
@@sandrikajackson9561 of course! I used 24 mats for a 22’ pool. You’ll just need to do the math for your pool. I got them at Tractor Supply.
Thanks so much!
Hello again I have one more question😬 Is there another base that I can use that’s as simple as this one but just as strong and doesn’t require me digging up my yard? Those mats are expensive!😫😂
Hey I have the same pool what type of pool cover is that? Can’t find anything that fits and stays
It’s a solar cover I got from my local pool store. I bought a larger size and cut it to fit.
Hello where can I buy those rubber based mates? And how many would I need for a 16ft x42in pool?
Not sure if you already answered this but where did you get your mats? Also, are the pool feet digging through the mats or did you use any pavers underneath? I also live in Michigan and have a 16x48 pool and take it down every Fall. Thanks
I got mine at Tractor Supply. They pushed in slightly being a soft surface, but that’s it. They didn’t continue digging in. I didn’t want the rough corners of pavers against the pool. If you really wanted pavers you could probably cut squares out the mats and lay the pavers in them flush with the mats.
Thank you for responding. Doing the quick math I would probably need about a dozen mats and that is a lot of damage at $50 a piece. Do you keep your pool up during the winter? I normally take mine down and store it indoors.@@backyardproblemsolver
@@4wheelers11 they’re not cheap, but the best solution I found for what I wanted to do. I leave mine up all year.
Beautiful 😍
Thank you!
@@backyardproblemsolver Your welcome just started working on mine yesterday but it's driving me NUTSSSS 🤣🤣 But I'll get there
Thats a really nice set up I just got q 10 ft pool would that really require leveling or would these mats work out fine??
Thank you! Just depends on the area you plan to put it, whether it’s level or not.
Is there anything under the frame poles?
No, just the mats
HELP! Your deck steps look like what we are planning. What brackets did you use for your stair rails? We need brackets that angle down BUT also will work for steps that are a little diagonal.
I did a video on the deck build as well. If you go to my channel you’ll see that video which gives more info.
I have a pool like your , How many mat's did you use ( Qt. please, thank you
I used 24 under the pool, and one more from the patio. But you can adjust if you want a larger border around the pool.
Love it !!!
Thank you!
Hey did you use anything under the poles or are they just sitting on top of the mat?
They are sitting directly on the mats
solar reel
Hi Problem solver.Love your idea and its durable.
What is your measurement on your pool and mat.
Thank you! 22’ pool, I used 24 4x6 mats under the pool
Thank you for responding. where did you purchase the mats.

Cool idea. Do you leave it up through the winter or take it down.
Thank you! I leave it up.
@@backyardproblemsolver what do you do in the winter when you leave it? I’m in eastern South Dakota so our weather isn’t too different
@@desisnyder I don’t remember all the chemicals, but I put in whatever my local pool store recommended. I stored the pump and filter inside. Then put an ice expansion bottle in the skimmer, and an ice expansion pillow in the pool. Then the winter cover.
Where do you get the mats???
Tractor Supply
We have this same exact pool. How many mats did it take you to do the bottom?
24
So these mats link to them? Also, do they attract sun and hot to bare feet?
@@MrzRed_United09 they do not link together. They’re black, but they’re also rubber. They’re hot in the sun, but to me, didn’t seem any worse than the composite decking.
@@backyardproblemsolver where you buy?

Hey man would love to know how you built the deck great job 👍
Thank you! I’ll try to get a deck video up soon.
Can you tell me what kind of pool you have please?
Where do you buy these ? Also do you have any videos how to keep a pool clean ?
I got them at Tractor Supply Co. I don’t, but I will consider making one on that! Great idea!
Genius!
Thank you!
