The reason it gets expensive is because it's vintage, the higher the price, the rarer the champagne is because it's all been sold. Non vintage champagne tends to be not as smooth as vintage, and is a bit rougher, however there are exceptions. If you're not into champagne, a good quality bottle of prosecco will do the job just as well! If you wanted to try a reasonable bottle of non-vintage bubbly, try Dom Ruinart, Blanc de Blancs (£80).
