Matt just psyches himself up for WAL matches, which are for the big money. He probably doesn't feel the need to emotionally drain himself for a state tournament.

I'm just talking out of my ass and speculating here. But Matt is from Red Deer Alberta, so he has to travel a lot for arm wrestling tournaments to qualify for the WAL season. He also probably has to work his Oil Rig job while training and competing. Additionally, He's a father, and taking care of children is no walk in the park either. Life just happens, you get busy with a lot on your plate.
Matt is a cool guy irl. But im WAL he makes himself mad in purpose
