    Water fountain that's a highly expressive musical instrument. You play it by blocking the water jets in various ways, which forces the hydraulic fluid (water) into the sound-producing mechanism in various ways. It works alot like a pipe organ, except that it uses water instead of air. See splashtones.com

    The passive droning it makes when nobody is playing it is like less ominous monolith music from 2001 A Space Odyssey.

    @EBE246 Hydraulis is simply an air organ that uses water as a source of power. Hydraulis is played by pressing wooden keys that allow air into organ pipes. Hydraulophone is a new invention, recently patented in multiple countries. Hydraulophone is played by pressing water jets rather than wooden keys. Hydraulophone is not an aerophone or idiophone or chordophone or membranophone; its in a newly created category of musical instruments.

    The largest of the hydraulophones shown in the video (which is actually the world's largest hydraulophone) is at the Ontario Science Centre, 770 Don Mills Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

    is the background drone a song or is it the instrument? If it is a song what's it called?

    • @hydraulist
      @hydraulist  2 роки тому +3

      The background drone comes from the instrument. It is set by the tuning screws or valves, and can be set to any chord desired. Typically the drone is set to a nice combination of notes such as A, C, E, ... (a-minor) so it is not to dissonant. Also the drone helps notes respond faster so it is often set so every note sounds just a little bit at all times, equally, so all notes drone equally but very faintly. This gives fast response when playing. So it is a matter of personal taste. Ideally there is a handwheel at the end of the instrument that sets the overall reservoir flow or water supply manifold or water exhaust manifold appropriately and it is nice to be able to set the "during drone" while playing, depending on the piece to be played. I like to have a "compass drone" (that's what we call it when all the notes in the compass of notes being played are sounded) very faintly happening during the piece I'm playing.
