I bought my uke bass a year ago but I could not find a physical teacher to teach me, so it just stayed in a corner of my place. Because I want something "bass" for our seniors uke group, I decided to search the internet for tutorial and found this website. Thank you for your very clear instructions. Funny thing, when I did something right I smile at you, my teacher! By the way I will be 79 this April and to learn play the uke bass is a gift I want to give myself. Hope I can learn something before then to surprise my group. Our group, which performs at nursing homes, plays old ditties loved by the residents (ages ranging from 65 above). Thank you for your teaching. I enjoyed my first lesson.
Such a lovely comment Nona, Thank You so much. I'm always glad to hear how I am helping, but have trally made me smile with your words. Very much appreciated, from your teacher. :-)
Oh my gosh. I adore you. I would have absolutely LOVED you as a music teacher in school. Hell. I'm an adult now and I love you now!! I'm here to learn ukulele and I'm sure hoping you will put together a strong set of lessons.
You might find this strange, but I looked for almost an hour, and this is the only actual beginner bass ukulele tutorial I found. Thank you for posting this. Now maybe I can learn something now. :-)
Fabulous lesson, thank you. Received my very first Ubass today, so excited to start learning. 63 years old, I can play chords on a uke, but always fancied bass. Never too late.❤
Weeeeeeeee! I’m SO SO happy that you’ve started to post Ubass lessons! Hard to find Ubass specific lessons as opposed to full size bass tutorial. Thank you!!!! Can’t wait to play with my three Ubasses (yes, I’m learning and I already have three - including a gorgeous solid body blue). 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎵😎🎵😎
I was so happy reading your comment Diane, you sound soooooo happy! TBH, I was quite suprised that there weren't more lessons aimed at bass uke rather than just bass guitar. Not something I had originally planned really but as a long time bass teacher, and loving my bass ukes I thought I could be helpful and have fun with my basses. 3!! Fair play, impressive! LOL What blue bass is it? I'm intrigued......
Ukulele Wales There are so few Ubass tutorials! Learning from standard bass can be challenging, especially for positioning techniques - so I am so grateful to see your videos! I got the blue one from AliExpress and she is STUNNING! took a couple of photos and would gladly share them with you ! (How?)
Love your lessons!! I am a senior and would like to purchase a Kala U bass but, not sure which Kala acoustic model to purchase. Please give me your opinion on this U bass. I am so excited by your lessons to make this purchase. Love your teaching style for the very beginner. Thank You!!!!
Thanks for such a lovely comment. It really does depend on your budget and whether you are looking at rubber strings or round wound strings? Kala are certainly the most well known U-Bass, and generally make great instruments but the more you pay, you do get better hardware, pickups etc. Are there any models or even other brands that take your fancy?
I wished there was more diversity of instruments when i was younger, the recorder quickly killed any interest i had in music at the time. But now i rediscovered it with my wife, i started play the Cavaquinho (the Grand father of the Uke) and now the Bass ukelele. I Wish i had you has a teach back then.
Hi, After learning Ukulele as my first musical instrument 3 years ago at age 60 I really enjoy being able to play and sing many of the songs which shaped my musical tastes. I’ve always fancied having a go at Bass but tried and struggled with conventional Bass Guitar learning resources then gave up. This lesson is EXACTLY what I need and I can already tell your teaching style will allow me to play along with my recently formed beginner Ukulele Group very quickly. So I’ve just won a used Kala U Bass on eBay and can’t wait for it to arrive so I can work through your lessons.
Thank you very much for posting these lessons. I just ordered a Bass ukulele and am already watching your wonderful lessons in anticipation of receiving it.
Thanks Steve, not something I had ever really thought about doing but there does seem to be a bit of a need as I've had quite a few requests! This one is very simple but I will hopefully do a couple more over the next few days.
Hi Rachel--and hello from Australia-- Goodness, I wish I found you when I first picked up a Ubass in my late 60s! You're a fabulous teacher and am now recommending you to uke players who ask me how to go to Bass--you've done al the hard work for me😂
thank you! this is great. Just ordered a bass ukulele. I'm practicing a bit while I wait using my Baritone Ukulele but tuned like a bass (but of course an octave higher). Look forward to going thru your whole tutorial. Bass very different from what I'm used to playing with a standard ukulele just strumming chord! Thanks again!
Not sure I understand 100% because to me, second position is 3 fret BUT to answer, by avoiding open strings it can make your playing “tighter” by having more control over your sound with less chance of open strings ringing on, plus you can start to get the feeling of patterns across the fingerboard.
Next time I go to wales with my lovely I want to give you a hug... post Covid of course.....I’ve been playing uke for about 4 years and just ventured forth into bass and harp uke.... thank you so much!
I have a Ubass. I love it along with my Steel drum from Trinidad 🇹🇹 abd drum loop machine I make a one band singing calypso soca and reggae and jazz standards. Love doing gigs with it. People out there learn the scales.vitally important! Scales and all the different keys.bless.

Rachel I have been teaching my wife how to play bass ukulele and couldn’t seem to get her to progress. (I am a music teacher) but my wife was my hardest student to motivate! Then I discovered your site for ubass lessons and she got so excited! Thank you for your great lessons, you have helped my wife get to the next level when I just couldn’t.
Thanks Bill, that's lovely to read. If it helps, I've given up trying to teaching my husband so totally appreciated what you've done to help her. Sure she appreciates it too.
This is brilliant! I'm so glad I found this channel... I just purchased my very first (serious) instrument - a gorgeous Kala electric/acoustic ubass and I'm a total beginner, this was very easy to follow, super informative, very personal feeling and so fun to watch/play along with. Thanks so much, heading over to lesson 2 now!
In fact, everything 's said in the comments already, but I feel the necessity to thank you personally. Got a Bass Uke as a gift from a friend, along with an amplifier LANEY Linebacker30. Haven't played any Bass before and was looking for help to get started. You're just, I make it short, a bliss and so talented in teaching beginners, so clear and motivating easy to follow your lessons. Would like to give you a big hug. So glad having found you 😊👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you sooooo much😊.
Hi, I do actually talk about using ukulele play along videos in lesson 2 as they are great to play along to. Also, I've made some drum beat tracks to play with, I will also mention these . Thanks
Hi Andrew, I don't own any of these and have only played a Journeyman so I can't really comment on the others. The Journeyman wasn't for me as I wasn't fussed on the roundwound strings - I know lots of bass players who love them so not saying they are bad, just not my personal taster. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
You are fabulous I love all your content.. thank you!! … and you can never have too many purple Basses 💜💜💜… your reviews helped me decided on my first Bass… got the Kala UBass and I’m already so in love with this beautiful instrument… ✌🏼💜🎶
I just ordered a SMHG-FL form Reverb. Can't wait. It comes with a case, with wound strings, and with two nuts - one for wound strings and one for nylon strings. Since I am looking for an acoustic upright double-bass sound, I might have to change out the strings. Would you recommend ThunderGuts or Road Toads for an upright bass sound? Or something else?
For me I prefer the Thunderbrowns strings, especially on my Kala SMHG-FL and I’m a double-bass player. I did have the Thunderguts on it but glad I changed them. Some of my more recent videos such as Brown Eyed Girl tutorial you’ll see and hear it. 👍 Congrats on the new bass BTW 😎
I wish I had had such a cool and good teacher when I was at school. Thank you. My new bass will be arriving sometime next week and while I do have a jazz bass (that i can no longer play for health reasons) I've grown to love all things Uke.
I have a basic but unusual question. I've got significant arthritis and things like that going on with my hands. I would like to play ukulele and I found the strumming really hurts my right wrist. Therefore I'd like to try Bass. My question is is there less pressure required on your fretting hand or fretting fingers with an electric base ukulele then with an acoustic electric base ukulele? I'd really appreciate some help with this because I'm going to have to buy it online since nobody around me has any.
Great question! I would say that you will probably find the polyurathene (rubber strings) on an electro acoustic easier on the fingers with your arthritis but I would recommend trying one in a shop if at all possible and if not make sure you buy one from somewhere you can retuen it if need be.
I have just got a bass ukulele with round wound strings. When playing with my baritone and tenor ukuleles I keep my fretting hand nails very short but not my strumming hand nails. I know this may sound like a silly question but what size finger nails would you recommend for plucking the stings of the bass?
Not a silly question at all Shirley and one I struggle with all the time. I’m the same, my “bass nails” on my right hand are very short but I do prefer a slightly longer nail length for ukulele and so I often juggle nail length with what I’m playing more.
Please help, hw do I find your playalong videos ? I'm excited because I just got my uke bass, learned my first notes and am eager to practise with your playalongs. Where are they please ?
Hi John, glad you've got yourself a bass. I use the "Team strings for Double Bass" book to teach the how to read music lessons. Normally available on Amazon, hope that helps.
Thank you very much for your nice lesson. I do have a question however: I own a Kala U-bass and notice that the edge is very sharp on my right-hand under arm. Please can you help me. Thanks a lot in advance, Anne
Hi Anne, apologies for such a delay in replying. Do you play standing or sitting and do you use a strap? If standing try raising or lowering it to see if you can get more comfortable. Also make sure your arm is relaxed. If these don’t help, try using a small towel or piece of cloth resting over the side to see if that helps. Sorry, it’s difficult to give better advice without seeing you play. Please feel free to ask more.
Oh My Merci from Montreal! just had a crush on a Bass Ukulele from the pawnshop and you were the first one to appear on UA-cam! Thank You Sensei for this first amazing and fun class
Hi, I have just bought my ubass yesterday :) I have the same Fishman Amp that you have that I can see in the background. I believe that it is suitable for my Ubass. What are your thoughts please? Im just wanting to have fun basically. Thanks again
Hi, great news on the u-bass. I wouldn't use the Fishman Amp for a bass as it's really meant for guitars. Generally I won't use them with a bass as you can damage the amps in the long run, sorry to bring bad news. Always try to use a bass amp if possib;e, please ask if you have nay more questions.
May I first say that you are absolutely brilliant. I’m 60 years of age and have a balance disease that has stopped me being able to work so have needed a hobby. You inspired me to start playing through your videos and although progress is slow your teaching is brilliant. I have a gear for music like yours ,Can you tell me if the feedback problem with Bluetooth amp connectors would be the same with inline headphone amps ? I can’t afford an amp at present and thought a headphone amp might be the answer. Thank you
Hi Dave, Thanks for your lovely comment and so glad to hear you are enjoying and making progress. Honest answer is I haven't tried a headphone amp or at least I don't remember if I had any problems. I'm sure my hubby has one somewhere, if I can find it I'll try it and see if there are any issues.
That right hand position seems really odd. The right hand is much too open to pluck the strings efficiently and comfortably. Without a pick-up to use as a thumb rest like on an electric bass guitar the floating thumb technique seems much more appropriate to avoid strain and to keep stamina. Of course, to each their own...
I've got more used to the bass ukes now and normally either float or use the E string. Took a bit of adjusting after playing bass guitar for so long but yes agree, I was strtching a little too much.
You are an excellent teacher! I was wondering if I wanted to try a bass uke so I could play along with the group and you have encouraged me! I'm going to get one and come back for more lessons. 😂
This is future me confirming the audio is now much much better. This was an early video and I just didn't have the right equipment or experience but I've learnt a lot since then. Apologies.
My left hand fingers always have them. Generally my right hand fingers are good for a few hours but I normally suffer if I haven’t played for a while. This is really only for metal strings, I can play forever on rubbers strings. When I played full time I had finger tips like leather! 😉
I will be getting my first ubass for my bday within a few days. I’m very excited about it and I’m very glad I found you channel just in time to begin 💕🤗
I actually got this one from Kala, direct from the UK. They haven't had many solid body u-basses available for quite a while, hopefully we'll see some more soon.
Hi Norm, hopefully you new bass uke has arrived. I normally wither use my frum machine (but you can download apps) or I use the ukulele play along videos on my Ukulaiens channel here. Hope this helps. ua-cam.com/channels/ZjDV_1UEbVsAQA_q9tyTWw.html
This is awesome. there's so much about music theory and everything like that that I think is important somewhere along the way but this was exactly what I was looking for. I want to grab the bass out of the box and start playing it. I love this.
Im 51 and this is my first musical instrument, and have fell in love with everything bass now. If all teachers were like you the world would be a better place.
Hi Carol, a bass ukulele has exactly the same tuning as a bass guitar or double bass. A baritone is more like a regular ukulele (can be strummed) but has the strings tuned to a lower pitch but not as low as a bass.
Thanks. I am not sure if the Nik West model is still available. They were only on the official Kala site but the shop page for them has been gone for a while now. They do do other models though.
So many things to talk about!! I hope I was your 3k sub. I am a welsh American ❣️ Living in Ca. Iv been a musican for 21 years. Started on bass. I mostly play acoustic guitar in my punk bassed band. Selling my double bass at this time to get back into a solid cutaway acoustic bass and a uke bass. Really happy to meet you and hope we can talk some!:)
Hey there, really good and easy instructions. Just got a Bass U yesterday, i like to have a book to learn - I bought the Hal Leonard Bass Method, I assuming it translated across as same principle and tuning?
Hi Peter, glad to be helping. I have also done a set of reading music on the bass ukulele using a double bass book. These may well help you with the Hal Leonard book too.
@@UkuleleWales thanks! I loved playing the Ubass so much i have actually bought a Bass guitar. Finished your lesson 3 on Ubass its great, also trying to use pinky so when when bass comes should be a small adjust to scale.
50 years playing guitar........ive had a U bass for 5 years and never picked it up ....now I can't put it down. ABSOLUTE WONDERFUL TEACHING thank you... oh and you're wearing a G Shock which increases your cool level 100% :-)
What type of bass is it? Sometimes a nice firm press down on the saddle on the E string will sort it out (make sure it’s not plugged in when you do it). If that doesn’t work you may need to remove the saddle where the pick up is to see if you can get a better connection but start with a firm press. 👍
@@UkuleleWales Its an Alvarez uBass. Ive got a 3rd amp now thinking that was the issue. Gone from a 15 watt to a 40 watt, now a 50 watt. Still big difference in lack of volume on the A string...
Hi Sherri, I bought it direct from Kala. It is the only one that I ever saw available and I had been watching for a good few years. I don’t think they will be making any more, sorry.
Ubass is the brand name that Kala gave to it's bass ukuleles or ukulele basses (can be either way) but lots of folks call all bass ukuleles U-bass but technically it should just be Kala u-basses. Hope that makes sense.

Sooo, it's standard EADG bass guitar tuning? How much does that first solid body uke weigh? Any idea?
Yes, exactly the same as a bass guitar. Sorry, I haven’t got scales suitable for weighing it but it’s really light to pick up.
Oh My Merci from Montreal!
just had a crush on a Bass Ukulele from the pawnshop and you were the first one to appear on UA-cam!
Thank You Sensei for this first amazing and fun class
So glad to be helping, Thank you for your lovely comment. :-)
Thanks so much! I just unboxed my Ubass and was in a where do I start mode! Boom, there you were - my angel! Thanks so much!
Glad I could help Sandra, fabulous to hear you have a Ubass. Please feel free to ask any questions.
Brilliant, Thank you. I learned so much from this one lesson especially technique.
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Awesome to hear and please feel free to ask if you have any questions. 👍
Hello just discovered your channel - you are an amazing reacher thank you!
You are so welcome Nicola. Hope you are still having fun with your beautiful ruby red. 🥰
Thank you for this. Can I ask - do you play with the nails on your right hand?
Hi Trevor, no try and pluck the strings with the "fleshy" part of you fingers, it sounds much nicer.
@@UkuleleWales Great - that's what I thought. Thank you.
In the future, can you get your microphone closer to you? The room echo gets annoying very quickly, thanks.
This is future me confirming the audio is now much much better. This was an early video and I just didn't have the right equipment or experience but I've learnt a lot since then. Apologies.
Shwmae! I'm new to playing U Bass, thank you for your good and not too fast explanations in your tutorials!
Thanks Peter, just very glad to be helping. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions!
Do you have or get calluses from playing the bass Ukulele? Thanks.
My left hand fingers always have them. Generally my right hand fingers are good for a few hours but I normally suffer if I haven’t played for a while. This is really only for metal strings, I can play forever on rubbers strings. When I played full time I had finger tips like leather! 😉
What type of strings do you have on the purple solid body from this vid???
It’s got the Kala round wounds made by Galli. I am hoping to try flatwounds on it soon. 👍
I will be getting my first ubass for my bday within a few days. I’m very excited about it and I’m very glad I found you channel just in time to begin 💕🤗
Great to hear Paoloa, any questions please feel free to ask.
@@UkuleleWalesThanks a lot!!!! It will be a fretless. I guess I will have tons of questions! Can’t wait!
So jealous. I cannot find a solid body uke bass like yours in the US. We only have the acoustics.
I actually got this one from Kala, direct from the UK. They haven't had many solid body u-basses available for quite a while, hopefully we'll see some more soon.
Waiting for bass uke to arrive, what program are you using for accompaniment?
Hi Norm, hopefully you new bass uke has arrived. I normally wither use my frum machine (but you can download apps) or I use the ukulele play along videos on my Ukulaiens channel here. Hope this helps. ua-cam.com/channels/ZjDV_1UEbVsAQA_q9tyTWw.html
The 6 dislike just missed the like button cuz this was very informative
Thanks, your support is much appreciated.
Bought the Thommann Bass Uke and this is great for a newbie like me ,,,thank you
Very glad to be helping, give me a shout if you ever have any questions. 👍
I’m a total novice. Any reason not to use the capo/ phone holder combo? Thanks!
Sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about and I’ve never used a capo on a bass sorry.
When I try a clip on tuner on my uBass. It doesn't work very well.
Is the clip on tuner set to bass or chromatic? Other settings don’t work very well.
This is awesome. there's so much about music theory and everything like that that I think is important somewhere along the way but this was exactly what I was looking for. I want to grab the bass out of the box and start playing it. I love this.
So glad to be helping. :-)
Lo v ed the lesson thank you
13:48 ... "...that horrible slapping..." 😂 Don't say that to Dave504!! 😂😂😂
😂 Love a bit of Dave504 😂
@@UkuleleWales 👍💪👍
Love this you make everything so clear, can I ask what drum machine you use
Thanks. Mine is a Boss DR-880 drum machine but there are others out there too.
Bass guitarist here reads chord charts and would love to jam with Ukeees
Fab to hear, I’m sure there are many uke players / groups looking for bass players - go for it! Let me know if you do manage to jam. 😎
New sub I’m so hate find you. Where from Wales are you from? X
Thanks for the sub! I’m from South Wales, the Swansea Valley. 👍
Thank you
You're welcome, glad to be helping.
Im 51 and this is my first musical instrument, and have fell in love with everything bass now. If all teachers were like you the world would be a better place.
Wow where did you buy that great electronic u bass? I love it.
Hi, I bought this direct from KALA, unfortunately they seem to have stopped making them now.
What is the difference between baritone and bass ukuleles?
Hi Carol, a bass ukulele has exactly the same tuning as a bass guitar or double bass. A baritone is more like a regular ukulele (can be strummed) but has the strings tuned to a lower pitch but not as low as a bass.
Thank you thank you im off to a good start look forward to next lesson
Very glad to be helping Anthony! Have you managed anymore of the lesson yet? Feel free to ask if you have any questions. 👍
❤ Woohoo Rachel I am ready for U-Bass Skule! 💫
Just catching up Debra - I know you are making fantastic progress! 🤩
Thanks you .. greetings from spain
Thanks, glad you enjoyed. Please feel free to ask any questions.
Hi there, will you be doing lesson number 2?
Oh I see you have!!
Thank you I was able to play along with you😊❤
I'm so glad! 🥰
I have always wanted to learn thank you so much
You are so welcome!
Real cool ma'am
. Can't wait till next episode
Thanks. Here is the next lesson in this series: ua-cam.com/video/W63-jNc5ZcY/v-deo.html
Cool bass ukulele. Where can I get one of those ukes? Thank you!
Thanks. I am not sure if the Nik West model is still available. They were only on the official Kala site but the shop page for them has been gone for a while now. They do do other models though.
So many things to talk about!!
I hope I was your 3k sub.
I am a welsh American ❣️
Living in Ca.
Iv been a musican for 21 years.
Started on bass.
I mostly play acoustic guitar in my punk bassed band.
Selling my double bass at this time to get back into a solid cutaway acoustic bass and a uke bass.
Really happy to meet you and hope we can talk some!:)
So cool to be 3K, I think you were as I checked at the time of your comment. Thanks for the support.
That 1st bass looks like a MusicWeeMan 1
My mini pbass! ;-)
.Great fun Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Mike
So I can play it like a regular bass guitar? I have an electric bass but I’ve been looking for a good U-Bass, Thank you for this great video!!
Yes you can, exactly the same, just not so far to stretch!
Very good beginner lesson.
Thank you! 😃
50 years playing guitar........ive had a U bass for 5 years and never picked it up ....now I can't put it down. ABSOLUTE WONDERFUL TEACHING thank you... oh and you're wearing a G Shock which increases your cool level 100% :-)
Thanks Steve, fab to hear I'm helping and even better to know you're another G-Shock fan - LOVE THEM!!
Fairly new with uBass. Why can't I get my E string to have as much volume as the other strings through amplifier ?
What type of bass is it? Sometimes a nice firm press down on the saddle on the E string will sort it out (make sure it’s not plugged in when you do it). If that doesn’t work you may need to remove the saddle where the pick up is to see if you can get a better connection but start with a firm press. 👍
Ok. I'll try that. Thanx
@@UkuleleWales Its an Alvarez uBass. Ive got a 3rd amp now thinking that was the issue. Gone from a 15 watt to a 40 watt, now a 50 watt. Still big difference in lack of volume on the A string...
Wondering where you purchased your purple ubass?
Hi Sherri, I bought it direct from Kala. It is the only one that I ever saw available and I had been watching for a good few years. I don’t think they will be making any more, sorry.
Would you possibly be able to hook me up with one?
And what is Ubass meaning?
Ubass is the brand name that Kala gave to it's bass ukuleles or ukulele basses (can be either way) but lots of folks call all bass ukuleles U-bass but technically it should just be Kala u-basses. Hope that makes sense.
❤️
What a wonderful clear teacher you are. So grateful I found you. Absolutely brilliant. Elizabeth from Australia
Thanks Elizabeth
