    Such a great video, Andy. I am learning Chinese as a native German speaker. My mother tongue is German. But I wanted to learn Chinese and really. I did it like you said. I focus in the pronunciation of a character and don’t waste too much time on remembering the correct tones. Thank you. Keep it up. You’re helping me so much 🎉

    I like to think that writing helped me with reading more than subtitles.
    Also, during my first year of learning, I would be able to read and write some phrases but I couldn't catch the sounds when watching dramas.
    So, since I was able to recognize simple Hanzi characters, I was able to catch the sounds
    Maybe it's different for everyone.
    Reading has always been my strong point. Even in my native language.
    Yes. Writing takes so much time that I stopped at Hsk 2 and I still learn how to write characters on a whim, because writing each character takes time. Especially, when I was writing each 25 to 50 times each. That's 600-1200 characters.

    When you type Chinese characters, do you always need to type in pinyin to find them? Once I learnt how to do this, writing became so much easier. No need to type in the full word, just the first letter - so amazing!

    • @nicoleraheem1195
      @nicoleraheem1195 Рік тому +1

      Yes and no.
      A Chinese showed me that you can type the first letter of the pinyin
      So, "Ni hao. Ni jiao shen me mingzi? Could be
      Ni h n j s m mz and the system will automatically translate it.
      I have the Chinese keyboard on my phone, and it works like this but I still have to search for the character I want

    • @celiad6012
      @celiad6012 Рік тому

      @Nicole Raheem I can do this, but I understood that Chinese people don’t usually learn pinyin, just learn the language by ear as children ( like most of us), then learn characters at school, by writing them again and again.

      It has captions you're able to click on the character to get an instant definition of it, you're able to save these words and you're able to double click I think, and it'll play 10 different audio clips of the same character.

    I'm just so happy Chinese doesn't have all the verb conjugation nonsense, and gender agreement between adjectives and nouns that almost every other language has. Even English has vestigial past tense (ed), present progressive (ing) ending conjugation and endless irregular past test verbs. Ug. As a native English speaker I feel bad about foisting all that junk on learners who are trying to learn "the International Language".

    Hello sir. I have a question that I have not been able to find the answer to through web searches. When is it proper to use only one character instead of two characters? I'll give you an example from where I work, and it was actually from tonight.
    We needed some assistance at the exit of the kiln. So I messaged the quality lady this:
    我们需要帮在1号窑炉出口。
    At the time, I could not remember the second character for help 帮 (助)

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  Рік тому +1

      Good question! We prefer to use two syllables in modern Chinese but we do keep some monosyllabic words from ancient Chinese. We don't have a certain rule to use one or two syllables but the collocations are mostly 2+2 - 需要帮助
      When it comes to naming something, 3 syllables are most popular: 1号窑, 北京市,地铁站...
      For the sentence you typed, they could understand you because of the context but 帮 is a verb while 帮助 can be a noun and 需要帮助 is a fixed phrase. You are welcome to join my live Q&A at 21:00 (UTC +8) on Sundays.
