Scott was their original beatboxer, and Layne took over the position when Scott left the group to pursue an acting career 🙂 he's been in many things, notably Jason Street in Friday Night Lights, and recently as Detective Carol Corbett in Lucifer. And the tribute to Rek was beautiful. He was their friend for many years, he filmed a lot of their behind the scenes videos (available on Patreon), he did some of their album artwork, and had a cameo in Boy Bands in 5 Minutes.
Thank you for respecting their memorial and leaving it in. I think it’s an important part of the piece, and reactors that let it roll are helping to amplify it and honor Voiceplay’s fallen brother.
At first I was caught off guard not knowing what Scott was going to talk about. But I’m so glad I listened. What an amazing thing to do for their friend.
To answer your question, yes! Scott Porter was the original beatboxer for VoicePlay with Layne actually being their baritone. Scott left to pursue an acting career and Layne stepped up to be the beatboxer as we all mostly know him as. Layne did a good 95% of the beatboxing but they share beatboxing parts with the "Red Team, Blue Team" moment where they were both trading off back and forth. This is one of those songs from Voiceplay where I can't pick a standout. Geoff's bass and setting a personal record with a B0 is just incredible. Eli with that high tenor G, it's so cool seeing him take the high tenor role these last few months. Cesar, man, is such a force for the group and in this song, from that chant to his overtones. Layne absolutely nailing the percussion exactly to how I remember hearing it. And then Scott's range is really surprising! Such a great track and your reactions are always the ones I look forward to most. Keep it up, man!
I absolutely LOVE that you left their tribute portion in your reaction. Most reactors don’t Bc it’s not the song but I truly appreciate you leaving it in your video.
I'm so glad you listened to the tribute. I'm also happy you showed appreciation not only for the low notes which get a lot of attention but also elis high notes which were fantastic in this one. So very well done. Scott is also a beat boxer. Hence his hit with the blue plasma. But Layne is a beast in this one.
Scott is a founding member, they all knew each other back in middle school, I believe the group was created in 1997 and Scott left to pursue acting so that was way before UA-cam was even a thing. I think the oldest thing you can find in VoicePlay's channel is from 2011-2012. Scott has been featured in another VoicePlay video called Just Sing, it was a fundraiser song they did during quarantine with a lot of guests they've brought to the channel and some former band members (if you decide to react to this one put on the closed captions so you know who everyone is)
I'm so glad that you watched the tribute at the end; it feels like such an important coda to the piece itself. But what an amazing piece of music, no? One of my favorite bits- which often gets overlooked- are the overtones Cesar creates right before Eli hits those super high notes. I had no idea he could do that! And as everyone has said already, Geoff and those B0s! Inhuman! Layne's percussion just keeps getting better and better, and Eli- I love hearing him soar. If you want to see a little bit more of Scott (along with a whole lot of other people with whom VoicePlay has worked over the years) you should check out Just Sing. It's something they did during the pandemic, as a fundraiser to support performing artists. If you keep the captions turned on, the text gives you basically a brief history of VoicePlay and their collaborators. Also the whole thing is stupidly uplifting; I cannot watch it without smiling.
You saw Rek in Boy Bands in 5 minutes. He did the wald through and hands of the sandwich. Scott went off to do TV and movies. I saw him in the last season of Netflix's Lucifer. He was also in Friday night Lights.
I first saw Scott in Hart of Dixie, where he is one of the main characters, but sings too and I love his voice! I was surprised when I during an interview with the Charismatic Voice found out that he was one of the founding members of VoicePlay, together with Geoff, Layne and Earl (and one more guy who I don't know). Amazing song from VoicePlay, as always!
"What was THAT?" was Geoff starting with an E1 (lowest E on a piano keyboard), followed by a B0 (second lowest white key on the piano) -- wonder if he'll next try for an A0 - the lowest on the keys
VoicePlay started in 1997 as 4:2:Five and was founded by Layne, Geoff, Scott, Earl (who just left last summer) and Mykal Kilgore. Both Scott & Mykal are in VP's "Just Sing" video which was Earl's last video with the group. Layne was originally the group's baritone & Scott was the beatboxer. Layne decided to try taking over the beatboxing when Scott left to pursue acting. Looks to me like they both were quite successful! Loved your reaction; I'm so glad you choose to watch the memorial at the end. Too many reactors have skipped right over it.
I think that most of the beatboxing is Layne. But if you watch their cover of "Just Sing" where they bring back past collaborators and group members, Scott has 2 segments and one of them is beatboxing. So maybe he did some of that while he was in VoicePlay or maybe after he moved on. I heard a little of it from him in this.
I love your channel. What a great reaction. I appreciate that you went ahead and listened to the tribute, because that was important to the video. Thanks!
Scott Porter was the original beat boxer for the original group. So you have two beatboxers, plus 3 tenors and 2 basses (Layne can do bass also)...amazing! Scott went on to become an actor (ie Friday Night Lights)
I love your reactions. Will you please do a reaction video of Voice Plays version of The Dragonborn Comes ? It is also from a video game. They are always so theatrical.
This is very reminiscent of PTX's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. But this was amazing! I've never actually played Halo, so I almost decided to skip this song, but I gave it a chance and omg was I blown away!
Scott was the original beat boxer - Layne took over when Scott went to acting. It is likely that Geoff and Scott helped Layne. The originals began in middle school chorus. I know that Scott played in Friday Night Lights, 6th season of Lucifer, The Good Wife, and other works. It was good to know who he is. I loved the tribute both to Rek their friend and Halo, their game.
Scott Porter turned to acting. I think he played the football player crippled on the field in Friday Night Lights. As to Rek, you see him do a quick walk-thru as he hands a sandwich off to the guys in their video Boy Bands in 5 Minutes. Both VoicePlay and Home Free dropped new videos earlier today. Home Free's is So Long Dixie, an original from the album of the same name. J None is back for VoicePlay's cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters and it is FABULOUS!!
Rek appears in Boy Bands in 5 minutes as the guy who hands them the sandwich....lol Scott was the original beatboxer, when he left to pursue acting, Layne took over the beatboxing.....the 4*2*Five was their name, and YES, there are clips on UA-cam......enjoy.
Not sure if anyone's recommended Geoff Castellucci's "Monster Mash" & "The Headless Horseman" but u should give them a listen since this is spooky month🎃 EDIT: Still a new sub here... not sure if u read all the comments but hopefully u read a few here n there.. lol.
This is just ridiculously good and they pulled out all the stops to honour Rek.. Scott was the original beatboxer and was doing some here too

@Josh Kirk yep, that was Scott! 🙂
This song Geoff hits his lowest note. A B0! And he does it twice

From Geoffs' B zero to Elis' F five … simply incredible l RIP Rek ! 😢
You saw Rek in Boy Bands in 5 minutes. He did the wald through and hands of the sandwich. Scott went off to do TV and movies. I saw him in the last season of Netflix's Lucifer. He was also in Friday night Lights.
Rek played in a rock band with Eli before Eli even joined Voice Play. That's how he became a collaborator to Voice Play.

I really hope to hear a 2nd subharmonic note from him eventually. That could even be as low as E0 since he is able to do a B0 in 1st sub.
This is flat out AWESOME! I never played HALO but the music....
Love this music. The tribute was sad but very well done. They are so creative with their songs.👏
This just stuns me. They just keep getting better....
Already know I'm gunna love this reaction

This was a wonderful way to recognize a friend. I’ve never heard the music of 4to5 either. I may have to look for it. Enjoyed your reaction
I love your channel. What a great reaction. I appreciate that you went ahead and listened to the tribute, because that was important to the video. Thanks!
Cesar just kills it in this!
This one seriously gives me goosebumps! Ha! You said you had them just as I finished typing that! They’re all so amazing in this!
You are on a roll with these reactions! Good to see 👍🏻💙
Thank you Tracy! I’m having so much fun checking these tunes out 😁🤘🏼🤘🏼

Yep Geoff piping some B0 for ya!!! He is freakin awesome!!!

Great reaction! Please check out their cover of Hoist the Colours! Their harmonies and melodies are absolutely stunning!
One key up from the last note on a piano. B0. Geoff often gives Layne a hand with the percs.

I don’t know if you’re still around but Scott Porter was just a finalist on the Masked Singer 😅
Ngl i dont know if VP did this but if i was geoff and needed to hit 2 of the same E1-B0 i would just use the same recording twice
Please react to this!!!! It will blow your mind.
