Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is a video game created by Raven Software, a sequel to Soldier of Fortune. It was developed using the Quake III: Team Arena engine. Once again, Raven hired John Mullins to act as a consultant on the game. Based on comments and criticisms of the original game, Raven Software developed Soldier of Fortune II to be a more "realistic" game, with tactical shooters like Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six as inspirations rather than Quake. A sequel titled Soldier of Fortune: Payback, made by Cauldron HQ was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2007.

      Official remaster maybe incoming :
Step 1 : Release on a platform the original game.
Step 2 : Force content creators to remove their free content bringing extra features, fixes and quality to the remaster you are planning : like SOFplus for SOF1
Step 3 : Remaster quickly the game with retextures, settings tweaks. Not too much effort, and funds come from the nostalgics who bought the edition on step 1.
Step 4 : Release your remaster and remove the original game.
Process was made for Duke Nukem 3D, Baldur's gate 1&2 and Icewind Dale 1&2. For SOF1, Step 1 and 2 were done at this day.
Furthermore, SOF1 and 2 were free for download on abandonware sites. It's not the case anymore for SOF1. Right now, still accessible for SOF2.
Edit : SOF 2 also removed from myabandonware

fun fact: if you cheat weapons in the ingame story sequences where you are able to move around, you can use these weapons to shoot at other NPCs and when you trigger any cutscenes, the NPCs will act out these cutscenes without limbs or their head blown off :D :D :D

Exactly. Peoples views and opinions change all the time. I used to hate call of duty ghosts and infinite warfare because it was the popular thing to do then I realized most of those haters were retards and gave those games a try to make up my own mind. I grew to love those games mostly infinite warfare over ghosts. While full of flaws and problems infinite warfare has one of my favorite singleplayer campaigns of all time.

Soldier of Fortune series are often overlooked, especially nowadays, and it's a real shame, cause the first two games are pretty damn good first person shooters. The original game is my favorite, and I consider it to be the best one, mainly because it didn't take itself as seriously as games do now. It's like your typical 80s /90s action movie in a video game form, on steroids and with tons of blood, gore and explosions on top of it. Cheesy as hell, yet so much fun. The game you're gonna be looking at next, though... oh boy. OH BOY. I don't know what kind of asshole could have shat a piece of shit that grand.

The weird thing about SoF2 is that it is possible to run the singleplayer in widescreen
however the multiplayer remains locked in 4:3 due to an anti cheating measure that flags the commands used as not being allowed. Which is unlike all of Raven's other games.
The only way to run the multiplayer in widescreen I remember was to use this patcher program that patched the .exe for the multiplayer.
The multiplayer was also capable of bots however you had to download a mod for it. There are also still people playing it however you need to update your files for it.
Interestingly enough they included a level in SoF2's multiplayer where their office rendered in the Quake 3 engine. So you can go postal in Raven's software's offices.

Thank you for redoing that review. SOF1 was really a legendary game amongst the FPS gamers. Everyone wanted a sequel. SOF2 was/is an amazing game. It doesn't age well but thats not the games fault. You have to look at the timeline. Raven simply wanted to outdo SOF1 in every single way and had great ideas for SOF2 but the technology at the time, simply wasn''t there. I mean, we're talking about geForce3 required to play that game. It was one of the first "nvidia, the way its meant to be played" games at the time. geforce 2mx and TI struggled to play SOF2 at higher-res. Yeah, SOF2 looks pretty dated now, but at the time, there wasn't any other engine that could do what Raven wanted. FarCry was like 4 years away with its Havok physics. SOF2 at the time of its release, was a very good game in every aspect.

3:24 one could not put better how it felt to experience violence in this game. SoF2 was my my first lection of anatomy I think, where I used a knife on a dead body's head to see what happens, and how curious I was to actually see individual pieces of skull being thorn apart and later the brain itself. Never have any game impressed as much in this aspect as this one.

The GHOUL (responsible for all the blood, guts and rolling heads) engine implemented in id Tech 2 (Soldier of Fortune) and improved in id Tech 3 (in this game) is a great example.
Today Raven is bound to develop Call of Bugs (Oops... I mean... Duty) for eternity!

I remember the first time I played this game was one of my longest gaming marathons. 12 hours without a break just playing. Beat my previous record of 7.5 hours playing anachronox uninterrupted.

Played this when I was 6 years old. (I was born in '96). I still remember that annoying last mission where you have to destroy the helicopter flying around the rooftop of the headquarters.
I still treasure this game to this day.
Childhood memories. Nostalgia upon hearing the main menu theme. 😥

Fair review. First game (IIRC) to have leaning around corners. The later missions become easy once you have the see-behind-walls goggles. I remember being addicted to them, because I felt blind, not knowing what's behind the corner :)

Played this for years from 2004, but not for the last 5yrs. Was a lot of fun. Our Clan =OSS= was No.1 Deathmatch for about 2 years (Csports). Server was BLOODRAVE. Ahhh the good old days.

The AK-74 might actually be a Norinco 84S since it's 5.56. It's less likely to be an AK-101 with retro wood furniture. I recall deathmatch being kinda fun in SoF2, though it doesn't offer the variety of Half-Life: Opposing Force. My typical loadout was an M-4/M-203, a Micro Uzi, a Mk.23 SOCOM, and thermal goggles. If we decided not to use grenade launchers (this was long before the use of "n0obt0obs" in deathmatch was frowned upon), I'd go with the M-60 or the AK-74. I recall the AK-74 having a bayonet.
*Note:* Intermediate calibers like 5.56 don't kick much, even on full-auto.
7:48 Now you have to say, "My hypocrisy knows no bounds," in Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday voice from Tombstone.
8:02 Those iron sights are just terrible! What is it with certain FPS games with ADS being like that?! Why do you aim *over* the rear sight instead of *through* it?!
8:11 Why is there no rear sight on that flat-top M-16?! Why have we been seeing this for that past decade in movies, TV shows, and video games?! If it lacks a rear sight - or both a front and rear sight - then you're expected to supply your own. Ideally, the rifle should come with folding iron sights as per standard (or fixed front, folding rear).

I still really prefer the first game though I do still enjoy this one and it's good to know that you came around to it. I have more fond memories of the multiplayer though, I even got back together with some of the folks I used to play it with and we had an old fashioned LAN tourney with this game. Good times. I really miss Raven Software... It sucks royal that Activision has more or less shackled them to CoD and forced them to do nothing but churn out multiplayer mappacks for all eternity. :(

On the subject of obscure first person games on consoles, ever heard of a game called Jumping Flash?
It's believed to be one of the earliest attempts at 3D platforming and it's a first person platformer, it came 1 year before Super Mario 64 and Quake.
It was on the PlayStation 1

I remember when I played this for the first time and I didn't know how I was ever going to play a shooter without the dismemberment feature again. Fortunately, I was able to and quite often still do play shooters. But to this day, I still think the over the top violence in this game is a masterpiece.

We really need to realise that this awesome game was released back in May 20, 2002!
Compaired to the games from that time it was simply to good to be true in many ways.
And even today i have to say that this game has a solid place in my top 3 of all times.

You know what really helps the cinematic scenes? Glitching the game during those test-firing portions so that you keep the OICW with a grenade. If you aim it just right you can kill everyone in the conference room and walk in, then watch as the main character has a conversation with himself and a bunch of dead mangled bodies. The best part is that the camera pans to them and there's no dialog... It just stays fixed on a dead body then pans back over to John carrying on the conversation. It's one of the most disturbing and hilarious things I've ever seen.
