We just lost our 14 year old Coton and are heartbroken. He was our best buddy, glued to my side and was my husband's wingman accumulating more hours in the plane than many pilots. Larger than most, taller and weighed 20 lbs. Very playful, and could run like the wind. The most beautiful eyes of any dog on the planet. Smart and loved to impress with his tricks. He would turn somersaults for a piece of chicken. Aloof with strangers.

I just lost my Coton after 161/2 years. My heart is completely broken. The sweetest dog ever. Followed me around the house, even to the bathroom. He was my first, and I am so grateful that he was in my life. I have a new baby coming in August. ( another Coton) Can't wait.

Rabia Graney well when he was a puppy he would get sad when he was left alone and he would also start leaving scratch marks on the furniture but that’s because he was teething I think

He sounds perfect. I am strongly considering getting a coton. My main concern is the separation anxiety aspect. He would be rare (doctor appointments) that I would have to leave him in the apartment alone - but still I have to account for that as a reality. How has your Coton adjusted to that? Or has he? Does he cry incessantly or bark when you leave? I'm in an apartment and very concerned about this.

Our Coton, JD, was in a litter of two and is significantly oversized (24 lbs). The extra size gives him more stamina and makes him very unique. He is loved by everyone who meets him and we are often stopped by strangers who are interested in learning more about the breed. We have friends with standard size Coton and it is amazing how similar they are in their characteristics and habits (sitting with rear leg to the side, smiling for cameras, playing “catch me if you can”, hyper visual - they notice anything new or changed, extremely quick to learn). It has been the greatest joy of my life to have had the experience of raising and training my heart dog, JD.

My Coton is the sweetest, cutest and most affectionate dog I've ever enountered (I may be biased). He is 7 and still loves to run and play outside, he cuddles and craves attention. He is very protective of my daughters and is great with kids. I am so grateful to have him, he even SMILES!
He does however get very anxious and lonely when I leave him, my daughters have said that he cries while I'm out. If you're someonwe who works long shifts and isn't home very often then I wouldn't recommend getting a Coton they get very lonely.

I have a 5 month old Coton/poodle mix and he seems to be 95% Coton. He is high energy, high maintenance (daily brushing and combing, daily walks and does best with 24/7 company - I left him alone for an hour ONE TIME and he chewed my belt and shredded my gloves) but, honestly, he is the sweetest boy and he is worth all the time and patience and accessories I have to give. I'm sure he'll figure things out as he gets older. He loves every human and animal he meets. His best friend is a huge Labradoodle, and this puppy runs him roughshod. He's a clown and he makes me laugh and he's a great snuggler. He learned how to sit, stay, roll over and lie down within a two day period. Good boy! Five stars!

The dog's physical abilities are underrated here, giving a false image of the coton saying "under avarage physical abilities".
Cotons are amazingly tough and agile little dogs who rarely get sick.
For their size Cotons are fast and persistent, and very skilled runners.
Sure, it's a very small dog and you can't compare its physical ability with a large dog breed.
Even if they look like that, they're not lap dogs.

  • @christine8823

Two years later ... My male Coton/poodle mix is now perfect! At least I think so. I figured out that he needs to have a variety of chew toys, and since I have wised up on this subject, he has not shown any interest in chewing other things. He still loves every dog, cat, human he meets. I can't say enough good things about this sweet, funny, sprightly little guy. He's great company and an always affable companion. He's my boy!

I have a 13 week old Coton, male, named Ziggy. He is feisty and playful. Loves to play bite my hands like a chew toy, but we are working on that. My husband and I lost our sweet Coton, Maddie, to kidney disease, that we did not know she had until about two years ago. Our vet treated her with fluids under her skin two days a week that helped her quality of life for the last two years. She was playful and full of life until her kidneys finally failed even with treatment. She was only 7 years old. We still miss her because she loved everyone she met and made a great companion dog. We loved her so much! Now we have our boy Ziggy, who is a joy to have. He isn’t replacing Maddie, but he has certainly stolen our hearts and we look forward to the new adventures we will have with him. Cotons need grooming everyday, so if you can’t handle brushing at least once a day, this breed is probably not for you. However, they are great pets for folks who have allergies. We have 3 grandchildren who are allergic to many things including most dogs. They are not allergic to Cotons! Another consideration. Over all this breed is great for apartment dwellers, seniors, allergy prone folks, and families with children who are not too young. 😊

My Roamie is one of the best little guys I have ever known and he is truly perfect....His only downfall is he has to be with me or daddy......I have two Yorkies and while I adore them.....Yorkies are Yorkies, Cotons are dogs....he is the perfect little guy....he is a clown, never shows attitude, loves to be with humans....I talk to him and he has the most magical eyes....I love him grown out but we get a summer cut on him as we live in a tropical climate and he is gorgeous either way....I cannot say enough about this year old package of love...he is everything I want in a dog...he wakes me up every morning with his verbal skills....sometimes he sounds like a bird and other times he sounds like we are killing him ...lol.....we aren’t around him when makes those high pitch screeches.....I am elderly and he just does what I want him to do....he is housebroken a lot better than my beautiful Yorkies.....these fur balls just want to make you happy....I would recommend Cotons to anyone, but there is a warning....if you work away from the home, they might get in trouble....my Yorkies, behave well, when we go pout but that coton really gives you a guilt trip....I adore my dogs!

This is one of the best 'overviews' of the breed I've come across. I am thinking about getting a coton (I've only had large dogs prior to this). I am in an apartment now and so miss not having a dog. The Coton seems like a perfect match for me, but am concerned on the separation anxiety thing. I don't go out often at all, when I go out locally I'd take the dog with me. But to doctor appointments, etc I'd have to leave the dog for a couple of hours. Do they bark, cry, and for how long? Sorry for taking up your time with a question. You just so beautifully shared how this dog fits into your life.

My cotton is very vocal. He barks very loud and can be heard throughout the whole home. My tip is discourage this behavior from a very young age. This breed is otherwise pretty much the best breed for new owners. They are smart, and will pick up your habits quickly. They do suffer with hip problems, so I encourage to not over feed your cotton. It will just put extra strain on their back legs.

I don't know the exact metric they are going by, but my gf's Coton is insanely agile. They have very powerful back legs and are incredible jumpers. They stand up straight (to beg, dance with you, or want to be picked up) with no issues, and this one is both very fast and loves chasing frisbees, balls, and anything else you throw for it to retrieve. She has incredible balance, and often figures out ways to jump up on things she shouldn't. She also seems to have no end to her endurance, and she's about 6 years old. Loves the dog park where she is the center of attention and runs around for 30 minutes without break.

We had a Coton for little over a year. She was, by far, the most aggressive dog I have ever been around. She ate, drank, barked, walked, interacted with humans, interacted with my Westie, EXTREMELY aggressively. When she had a meltdown when left alone for the first time, tinkled everywhere in her fury, and stayed full of rage for days thereafter, we surrendered her. No regrets. She was a vile little monster.

That information about Croton’s it’s not 100% true a cotenants lifespan depends with on how they live and how well they’re being cared for
eat their diet same formation to me it’s not 100% accurate if anything I find it maybe 40% accurate I have two female Coton de Tulears my oldest is nine and the second one almost 8 if you do research on the lifespan of an animal it depends on where they live how they’re treated and if they have a very happy content life a females lifespan could go up to 20 years and I believe mine will but mine aren’t super friendly because they are very protective of their owners they are very cautious on who they’re around that video is totally a generic statistic

I'm sorry, but this video is over the top, subjective. No ""facts"" are presented to explain their conclusions. We've had 2 beautiful Cotons, one passed away at 15 years old, the other, our baby girl at 10 weeks. I speak, objectively, and from my own experience. Cotton de Tulears are a very sturdy breed. They rate at the top, in overall health. Far over most breeds. As for grooming, Cotons do require routine brushing, but if they are brushed, routinely, the brushing sessions will be rather brief, and simple. Bathing is a breeze; like shampooing one's own hair. A quick blow-dry, and brushing, and you're good to go for a week, or two.
The overall health rating of 37 / 60, is laughable. I would venture a guess, as to who made this video, and that would be the owner of a hairless Chihuahua. 😩
