I'm always looking forward to your recommendations, so this one was an absolute treat! The diverse range of your picks and the way you describe them make me fall in love with reading even more. Definitely reading some of these very soon, Word by Word and Memorial Drive especially. Also happy holidays! Finding your channel this year was incredibly rewarding. Thank you for sharing these videos with us. 🤍
I trust your non fiction recommendations, so I’m putting all of these on my list. My favourite non fiction books this year were the Radium Girls by Kate Moore, Queens of Animation by Nathalia Holt, Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates, Columbine by Dave Cullen, A Mother’s Reckoning by Sue Klebold, The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson and Breaking and Mending by Joanna Cannon 📚
Ok, I'm convinced! I have to pick up Empire of Pain. I just posted my top nonfiction books of 2021 video and Say Nothing by the same author made my top 5. It was incredible so I'm stoked to pick up his newest book! Thanks for the awesome video!
Empire of Pain is on my TBR for next year! I haven't read non fiction for 'fun'... Ever but I want to change that in 2022. I don't have a very high goal, if I read 3 I'll be happy and this one is on the list so I'm happy to see that you enjoyed it.
I read Between Two Kingdoms after your recommendation and loved it. I was so sad to see Suleika share on her Instagram that her cancer is back recently 😢
A great list! Thank you! Featherhood is already on my TBR. Tall Men, Short Shorts might be a book for my brother, because he used to play basketball. My favourite nonfiction books that I read in 2021 are Life as a Unicorn by Amrou Al-Kadhi and Ace by Angela Chen. I want to read much more nonfiction next year, because there are so many great books out there - and in here, on my shelf 😄 All the best for 2022!
YAAAAAY!! I look forward to everyone’s yearly wrap-ups but yours (especially the nonfiction ones!) have a special place in my heart 😊 I want to read all of these but Under a White Sky I may pick up soon as I’ve been craving something like it. Thanks as always and here’s to another great reading year!
Word by Word was one of my top books of last year!! Working in a dictionary is now my actual dream job, and I’m not even kidding 🤓 As a big crafter myself, Sutton Foster’s memoir intrigued me, but I had my doubts about it, I was glad to see it on this list!!
Tall men, short shorts 🤣 great title. Well dang it.. the song wasn’t in my head until you said that!! Your description really makes me interested in reading it even though I am not a basketball fan.
When you recommended Word by Word, it reminded me of a book I read years ago that was one of my favorites and I can still recall to this day: The Great Passage by Shion Miura. It is a Japanese translation following a man who works for a dictionary publisher and the extra nuances within the Japanese language were so interesting. You might enjoy it.
I enjoyed listening to you wax eloquent about these books. You're a gifted speaker. The only book I've read is FEATHERHOOD and I'm pretty sure I got that recommendation from you. I loved it [I also love H is for Hawk and agree with the comparison] My other favorite book this year is: Crying in H Mart. Wonderful, raw, and honest.
Thank you for the recommedations! I really want to read more non fiction next year. Empire of pain has been on my radar, now I really really want to read it!!
I really want to read the Billie King memoir, ever since I heard about her match with Bobby Riggs I've wanted to learn more about her. I got the audiobook for Memorial Drive soon after your review, can't wait to listen to it. I think my favourite non-fiction this year was either Blue by Kai Kupferschmidt or Chop Suey Nation by Ann Huey.
I always look forward to this video every year. I admired Billie Jean King when I was young since she was one of the few female professional athletes around at the time. Only golf and tennis had female professional leagues back then. I need to read her bio now after hearing your hearty recommendation. I also want to check out Between Two Kingdoms.
I have several of these books on my best list thanks to your recommendation. A book I am reading now is also a great sports book that you may have heard of: The Third Pole by Mark Synnott. If you haven't read it, give it a look--I think it would be right up your alley. It is an excellent read and well researched--Everest 2019 looking for Mallory's camera, an great adventure with lots of history, mountain climbing.
I was literally checking your channel every few hours over the last few days for this exact video! Great list Olive. I've Featherhood, Under a white sky and Between two kingdoms and Word by word on my 2022 TBR after hearing you talk about these. Have you read The nutmeg's curse by Amitav Gosh (a climate Nonfiction)? Was expecting more of nature reading on the list!
I haven't sat down to look at my favorite books from this year yet, but Between Two Kingdoms is definitely in the top 3, if not in the top spot (all thanks to your recommendation!). I read it early in the year and I have thought about it throughout the course of the entire year. I was devastated to recently hear that she's sick again. It felt like getting that news about a friend.
This is probably my favorite video during the year! I love all the recommendations. Thank you for all your work this year 😍
Mine too! :)
Hi Deb!!!!!! I love these types of lists as well. 🥰

What a wonderful list, Olive! A lot of diverse voices and such a great watch. (Surprised Tucci didn't get an honorable mention)
Reading word by word now, thank you for the recommendation, might've missed it otherwise
Thank you for the recommedations! I really want to read more non fiction next year. Empire of pain has been on my radar, now I really really want to read it!!

Just received Empire of Pain for Christmas. Sounds like there should have been a stress ball along side it. Anxious to begin reading it.

Hi olive. I read Catherine the great biography by Robert K Massie based on your recommendation and it's one of my favorites this year.
I always look forward to this video every year. I admired Billie Jean King when I was young since she was one of the few female professional athletes around at the time. Only golf and tennis had female professional leagues back then. I need to read her bio now after hearing your hearty recommendation. I also want to check out Between Two Kingdoms.
I had never heard of Word by Word! This word nerd is very exited about picking that one up.
Thanks for “helping “ me add to my TBR pile…😂
Just added five books to my TBR. Now I have to watch the reviews to make sure they won’t make me cry at work, lol.

I guessed the top spot! Can't wait to read it myself
I want to read next year Empire of Pain. I hope you can read The Slave Ship by Marcus Rediker so I can know your opinion.
I really want to read All In. I've loved Billie Jean King forever.
Sounds like great non-fiction books. Blessings.
Between Two Kingdoms is one of my favourite books ever. Sadly, her cancer is back :(
I haven't sat down to look at my favorite books from this year yet, but Between Two Kingdoms is definitely in the top 3, if not in the top spot (all thanks to your recommendation!). Word by Word is on my TBR, but I DNFed Stranger Care - I thought everything about it was awful! Different books for different people, I guess. 🙂
