    Very nice introduction into the new Aldebaran! Thanks for the measurements and the overall breakdown of the reel. I've been very pleased with this new model. The casting out of the box is the best that i have come across so far. I own 30 or so bfs reels and this one gave me the chills casting it. Many of my reels are heavily upgraded and this new Aldebaran is right there or even perhaps a little better, especially with 1.5 grams and under. Truthfully, the looks of this reel in person are way better. Its really growing on me. It feels fantastic in hand. Looking forward to your next casting video!

    Although I know very little about BFS, I’ve fished for the past 35 years and have used every brand of reel known to man over the years. I’ve learned overall that Shimano is the best used for performance and longevity. Plus they actually stock parts for repairs if necessary. Good review on this BFS reel.

    Came here from the forum and saw your video up, good stuff. Glad to see the Alphas has a worthy competitor, competition drives innovation. Just such a step back in the looks department, looks like an Aliexpress junker made love to the 2016 version and it birthed this tiny monster. That brake dial isn't even slightly indented, looks like the knurling is fully exposed...

    • @HobieWanKenobi

      You talking TackleTour forums? Yeah, the brake dial could have been done better. I think it was made more accessible because many people complained of the previous version's brake dial being difficult to turn.

    Great In depth review! I just ordered one. The 2022 is super smooth and even stock spool and bearings seem very smooth and quiet. The only thing I noticed as well, was the drag star setting at the lowest/most loose point still seems pretty tight. Not sure why Shimano did that? My Shimano Scorpion and Curado BFS reels can go much lighter on drag.

    One thing …. Shimano should make the direction of the brake dial consistent across all its baitcasting reels…. Eg clockwise … DC reels lessen brakes while other reels like the Aldebaran tightens brakes when turned clockwise …. surely a basic fixable re-tooling job
    I’m very keen on the new XG rate vs the previous XG rate (8.1 then vs 8.9 now) and the difference in how a lure retrieves

    Wow I'm getting it. Those o-rings are genius, finally they may have silenced the dreaded spool play that drives me crazy when I'm jiggin and working jerk baits. I would like to know how it compares to the gekkabijin. Particularly smoothness and how tight the tolerances are from reel to reel. I've really keyed in on how tight the tolerances are in reels and it has become one of the most important factors to determine whether I like a reel or not. I don't like my curado bfs for that reason....

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 роки тому

      You could fit that amount of line in the Aldebaran. Holds about 45m of 8lb mono so, 10lb braid should hold more than that.

      Shawn, I do cast some small hardbaits. If you are bass fishing with all around lighter lures, Jackson Blast Beats has some very versatile rods that can fish plastics and hardbaits just fine. Bait Finesse Empire got some in stock in the USA. If going to only use plastics, I suggest the Dobyns Sierra 700 SUF. Feels like a MH jig rod casting bass plastics but, downsized in power to cast lighter lures. baitfinesseempire.com/product/jackson-blast-beats-rod-series/
      Whatever rod you decide, I want to know what you choose and how you like it. I like to see what people choose for fishing gear to get a feel of differences between anglers.

      @@shawninmn1447 The Dobyns can be a little stiff for crappie. Can work but, the fast action can tear lips, even with mono. The solid carbon Blast Beats rod gives more in the backbone to cushion the hookset and flipping when horsing fish.

    Man...might be enough to get me to get one....if the performance difference is there.
    Those o rings might allow for less spool tension.
    that spool design i like. but would be more beneficial on a shallower spool though. i always line my spool knot up over a hole in ported spools. one of the reason i never got a avail shallow spool was because of fishing the conquest shallow shallow special had knot issues. Probably cant use new spool on the 16?
    I wonder if the orings help retain oil? my aldebaran limited is almost unusable if it gets dunked because the lite oil gets washed away. Other reels i lose some performance before a re-oil but not as bad.
    I think the Daiwa Presso was out before the aldebaran bfs also. More of a niche trout marketed reel but its sub 1/8th performance still hangs with more recent reels. Super light drag also. like 2lbs or somthing. i fish with it cranked all the way down almost...lol Oh...Dont forget the bfs grandaddy the daiwa pixy! ;)
    Thanks for the table top review. Cant wait for the on the water report!

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the insight. The O-rings are pretty nice feature. The Presso and Pixy were definitely finesse reels but, not quite like the 12 Aldebaran BFS. I found the Pixy out of the box was capable of 1/8oz casting hard in open water. Still an iconic reel that really set the need for finesse baitcasting reels.

    • @shtizen4371
      @shtizen4371 2 роки тому +1

      @@HobieWanKenobi true the pixy wasnt as capable an ul reel but its popularity kinda led to bfs in my opinion.
      The presso was a ul bfs capable reel. I fish my 16 aledbaran exactly how i fished my presso. Presso was overlooked and underated. Admittedly the presso dont cast as far or pitch as good out the box as newer reels but if it didnt do as good as it did i probably would of gave up on bfs.

      My limited stays on a teton 662l. great all round river bassn combo. go as light as 2.5 grams and as heavy as 3/8s effectively.
      My presso is on a volkey 6'4" ul. The rod is really closer to ml(lighter top 1/3 tho). its my loner bfs combo. like i said its pretty tame and predictable. The 12 has the same brake system as the 15 LTD. Not the greatest for light lures in the wind but, weightless bass plastics feel great with it. The frame is awesome with the CoreFit body. Fun fact: The Shimano Stile is the same frame as the 2015 Aldebaran (non BFS) with the CoreFit sideplate so, it is even smaller.

    Micro module gears,so it a New reel! Oh wait Shimano puts Micro Module Gears in almost all of their baitcasters over the past years. I hope it can cast the 1 gram trout magnet. I really can't tell which brand is better anymore...Daiwa or Shimano. It's a wash. The Tackleadvisors was RIGHT.

      The looks arent horrible. I think the 2016 looks better but, looks arent enough to deter me if the performance is there.
