  • What's the hardest animal to intubate? What's it like anesthetizing a giraffe? In this interview with veterinary anesthesiologist Dr. Margaret Wypart, I ask these and many other questions about anesthetizing all different kinds of animals.

I think something very important that’s being left out of this conversation is that typically in the vet clinic the role of the anesthesiologist is shared by the vet who’s also the surgeon and the veterinary technician. It is extremely rare for a pet to get surgery under the supervision of a veterinary anesthesiologist. However this is a super interesting video!!

Fair point. I suspect is that veterinary anaesthesiologists' skills are likely often reserved for the more complex problem solving that might occur at facilities with more studies than the corner pet veterinary clinic for your dogs and cats - say zoos. Am I right?
I can't imagine most pet owners being able to afford their services when the cost of the veterinary surgery is already pricey.

Most general practices still utilize this methodology and it is 100% the most common. Veterinary Anesthesiologists aren't entirely new but they are definitely one of the newer and more niche specialties that exist amongst veterinarians. You definitely will only find them at specialty hospitals and teaching hospitals but I can say there is a large demand for them at the time. As someone who is working toward veterinary anesthesiology residency I can say a lot of specialty centers are wanting anesthesiologists to establish their clinics as level 1 trauma centers. I love the field and am very excited to pursue this career.

Veterinarians are one of the best doctors. It takes SO much to deal with a plethora of different species.

I remember being an anesthesia resident and the vet my dog went to was so nice when he found out I was in residency. I was fascinated getting a tour of the OR and seeing how they operate anesthesia for animals. I think I was there for an hour asking questions and checking out the OR suites. This was a great idea for a video. Hope residency is going well.

For the most part, the Registered technician are the ones that induce, maintain and recover anesthesia.
The techs also calculate all the dosages as well!

Anesthesiology was my favorite rotation in vet school. Now out in practice I consider myself an anesthesia nerd but I don’t think I could ever specialize in it.
**edit: since she was trained in Europe Dr Wypart’s answer to the education question is different than for the US. UK/EU vet programs start after high school, in the US a veterinary degree is a doctorate which required a bachelor’s as a prerequisite. Most vets I know majored in biology or animal science as undergrads.

Just want to point out she completed vet school in the US at Penn.

    • @broccolirob905

Yes this is true for Canada and the US you typically need to do at least two years of undergrad before you can apply to vet school.

Vet student here! I've been lucky to help out in some alpaca castrations surgeries on a farm, they lie the alpacas (also ruminants like goats) on the left to help prevent regurge. You can't fast them like you would a dog or human. When she says rumens are huge and carry large volumes, they really are absolutely massive. They pretty much occupy the entire left hand side so the liver and all the other organs are actually pushed to the right!

That was a really great video! Thank you! Remember when during my first year of anaesthesia residency the vet anaesthesiologist asked us to be in our OR to look how it works with humans and to have a better understanding of our equipment. We were talking through all day in OR, asking questions one to another. It's really fascinating

I was very thankful I was able to take my senior dog to a veterinary anesthesiologist to get his pheochromocytoma removed. Without an experienced anesthesiologist, my dog would not have made it through the procedure. Thank you both for speaking to us!

In Brazil this kind of service is common, in the ordinary cases we have an anesthesiologist on surgeries and procedures, TIVA technique is very common too and we often see BIS and Vigileo monitor in most envolved places and universities

Thanks for your awesome videos Dr. F. Because of your videos I was able to ask some smart and important questions about my anesthesia and surgery when I had my hysterectomy. It helped me feel way more comfortable with everything.
I was spayed on June 13, 2022. Surgery and anesthesia went well!

Max Feinstein could you ever imagine yourself being a vet anesthesiologist instead of a human anesthesiologist? Would you find it boring/meaningless without the communication aspect that human patients bring to the table?

@@MaxFeinsteinMD OMG, I didn’t expect you to reply.
Doctor Feinstein, I am sorry for my comment.
I am not in the Medical field, but learned so much about what an anesthesiologist does from this channel.
Thank you for sharing your practice.
I hope you are the doctor when I need you; hope I never need you if you get me.
