  • 30 years ago, on 14th February 1990, Voyager 1 captured an iconic image of the Earth - known as the "Pale Blue Dot". This photo was taken from a staggering 6 billion kilometers away - at the edge of the outer Solar System. Taken at the request of legendary astronomer Professor Carl Sagan, Sagan waxed poetically about the image a speech often referred to as the "Pale Blue Dot". To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this truly unique image, NASA and JPL-Caltech reprocessed the original image using modern processing techniques. In honor of the Voyager 1 team and the late Carl Sagan, we put together this short tribute video celebrating the Pale Blue Dot, with a reading of Sagan's wonderful prose by Professor David Kipping.
You can now support our research program and the Cool Worlds Lab at Columbia University: www.coolworlds...

"This photo was taken from a staggering 6 billion kilometers away - at the edge of the outer Solar System."
Common misconception. Voyager 1 has not left the solar system. In 2004 it reached the area of termination shock, where the pressure from the solar wind starts to be less than interstellar wind.
There is no clear definition of the end of our solar system. Depending on how you define the end, Voyager 1 will leave the solar system in 15,000 - 30,000 years from now after crossing the Oort Cloud. Sedna, which is a dwarf planet in our solar system orbits at 12.8 billion km twice the distance of where Voyager is now.
Elvis has not left the building yet.

After binging a few episodes, I just had to make another comment to express the gratitude I feel towards this channel.
There are so many space-related channels out there, but NONE of the other(which I've found) channels can't even be remotely compared to Coolworlds. The quality, the wording and the frontier concepts which are backed by legit research is nothing less than awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping.
Professor Kipping, besides being highly intelligent just like many of the greates through out history, also has the capability to express the complex concepts in a way that makes it understandable for us who haven't spent our lives in research/academia. I'm sure he will be remembered in the future as a Great Astronomer just for the Halo Drive, among other things, i'm certain.
This is history in the making, guys. We are alive to witness this right now.
    Side note:
I showed my wife the video "A journey to the end of the universe" both of us were stunned. She too, even though she has no particular interest of Astronomy, she still got amazed while Prof. K went on explaining. That's toptier, right there. Converting the uninterested is no easy feat, especially not in this day and age.
If you guys happen to read this, I salute you and your crew. Huzzah! Long live Coolworlds lab.
(Ignore the grammatical errors and such, english is my second language.)
Thanks and best of luck to anyone who took the time to read this.

    Short but sweet. Thanks CW.
I do want to point something out. It’s not a criticism of this line of thought, but a consideration worth pondering.
What is the effect of perspective building exercises such as this, in the face of the reality we run straight into every day? The reality of personal tragedies, illnesses, unemployment, and depression. All of these are deeply personal and require the polar opposite framing to what we see here.
If we all agree that information misaligned with your world view causes immediate subconscious rejection, then is it possible we can agree this framing is equally counterproductive to broad swathes of the population. When your personal experience is the one you have to live with, then why would anyone care to hear about how insignificant those experiences are? It’s yours. Its all you have and it’s all you’ll ever know.

Carl Sagan inspires you? He is totally wrong when he says there is no one to save us or that we are insignificant in a vast universe. The universe is essential for our existence on planet earth. Change or remove one atom and we would not exist. That's how special we are in God's creation. And Jesus is our help. Not Carl Sagan. Read the bible, it's the only truth on our special planet. It's time to repent. Jesus is coming back very soon. All bible prophecies come to pass EXACTLY AS PROPHESIED. WAKE-UP. EVERYTHING HAPPENING IN THE WORD RIGHT NOW IS PROPHESIED TO HAPPEN IN THE END TIME WHICH IS NOW.READ THE BIBLE. MARANATHA.

A great and inspirational quotation from a brilliant man. But I disagree with him about our creating settlements beyond Earth: we could be doing that really soon, certainly within the next thousand years, and probably within the next 500. Provided of course that Mother Earth continues to prosper in the meantime. Thanks for posting this.
