- Episode 139. I wanted to share some thoughts on this affordable Barrel strength dram before Christmas. This bottle has a very classic Bourbon profile for me, but somehow is still lively and keeps me interested. I really enjoy this bottle, have you tried Old Ezra 7 year? #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour
Thanks for your open-mindedness in your reviews! Much prefer an honest opinion than a standard one.
Thanks! I hope I can continue to share my experiences, just as they come. Cheers!
This has a lot going for it my friend. Great review.
I really enjoy it. My score is likely a little high, but it is exactly what I'm going to the cabinet for these days!
sounds good !!
It is. Granted , a little hot, but really excellent flavour.
I didnt even realize you posted this video prior to mine. That's too funny. Good stuff!
I love it when something over laps. It gives greater perspective. Reflecting on this one, I was a little over zealous. But I do enjoy this bottle!
Great review Jon! This is one I really enjoy and pretty affordable for us in our area about $35 to $40US. Cheers and Happy Holidays to you and your family
And to you and yours! Cheers!
Yes, this is a $40 bottle. But the secondary in MD has it up to $110 already. Don't forget the 9% tax on alcohol in MD.
Merry Christmas Neighbor Jon
Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas Jon! Thanks for the review!
Missed this. It was good to hear you are enjoying OF at the bottom of the bottle again!
Great bottle for the money! Haven’t spotted any in awhile. Great review! Cheers!🥃👍
I clearly agree. Thanks for dropping in, and Merry Christmas
This one sounds legit and with a good price to boot:) Awesome review.....Merry Christmas John!
Thanks. Merry Christmas to you and your family too. I loved this, but I was a little to enthusiastic here. It is a bit rough. Good juice, but still loud. Cheers!
Those are some great attributes, 7 years and 58.5 abv. It is a wonderful colour and the flavours you describe sound really good! I'll have to give this one a try. That liquour store in Airdrie has some incredible prices. Thanks again Jon, Slainte!
It sure does. I wish I lived closer to Sierra Springs! I hope you enjoy it too.
Great review! I’ve got a bottle of the old ezra 7 101 proof, have been wanting to try the cask strength but it’s hard to justify paying nearly 3 times the price.
Ouch! That seems really steep to me too. Maybe it will go on sale during the holidays. Cheers!
I just picked this up. After your review maybe I'll crack it open over the holidays. Cheers!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!! Cheers!
Solid juice! Love the review! Cheers 🥃
It is!! Cheers indeed, and I hope you have something excellent in hand!
Arguably the greatest Bourbons/Ryes ever produced in the US were sourced from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (err Willett) so there really should be no issue with sourced except transparency. In the end who cares if it is quality Whiskey.
I believe 6 of the 10 highest rated Scotch Whiskies on Whiskybase are sourced (IB's)although distillery labeled.
I like this Bourbon as well and picked up a backup. I still like the 1920 more but is impossible to get in Ontario unless it is brought in from the US.
Thanks for the insight Peter. I want to appreciate what's in the bottle too, but if the source is hidden, then it is a bit tougher. I think you are clearly in the majority with 1920, but I'm glad you can appreciate this too.
@@WhiskyNeighbour I should have stated sourced by KBD/Willett and bottled. KBD bought up a lot of ageing casks when Bourbon was not popular from places like the old Bernheim distiilery among others.
A great review John, and some good talking points in there too. I understand the debate around the sourced issue but, for me, what matters most is the quality of what's in the bottle. In the summer I had a good chat with Ciaran Mulgrew, who started The Quiet Man whiskey, and it was really insightful about the processes and massive costs involved the business. Cheers.
That is what I was trying to talk too. Sometimes these guys need to go through a "sourced" stage just to make it. Cheers!
Good review John, 💯
Thanks!
IN Ontario, LCBO has Old Ezra 40% (30$CAD), Ezra 7y 50%(48CAD$) and Ezra-7 Barrel Strength (70$cad); likely replacing Evan Williams as some suggested, maybe, Heaven HIll most likely. Very different profile than other bourbons. Side-by-side to my 9y Knob Creel 60% single barrel (60$cad/Ontario), i prefer my 9, but the Ezra-7BP has a lovely bottle, unique profile, but a bit pricey . Nice vid, love it. Thx
Thanks for the details! I need to blind taste this beside KC SB. My mind says I would prefer the KC, but it has been awhile. I tried the regular old Elzra and did not like it that much. This barrel proof seemed better. Cheers!
another great video. personally i don't have an issue with "sourced" whisky at all as long as nothing is being hidden from the consumer about the product. i know you are a fan of compass box as well as i am and they are great about providing all the information about what they do. have a good sunday and see you on your next video
Thanks. Totally agree with any company like Compass Box that is transparent. Have you tried this one? I may have been a little overly positive, but I do enjoy it.
@@WhiskyNeighbour ...haven't tried it yet, but when i do i'll come back to this video and comment. see you next video
@@scotchrocksred great!
Affordable and tasty. Check and check 🤗 cheers 🥃
Cheers indeed. I feel like this is a great bottle, certainly worth what I paid up here for it.
Jon, you have the same problem me and my friends have I think. After the WOW factor of Booker's, Elijah Craig, and Knob Creek single barrel most other bourbon's just fall short. It's cool that the 3 I mentioned are always a little different.
I think you are right. I really do enjoy KC single barrel, and often it is a good price. Cheers
HA. I was about to pour some of this right as I came across this. Watching The President's Cup wrap up with Evan Williams Single Barrel. Then going for this very bottle.
Perfect!!
@@WhiskyNeighbour it's going down perfectly.
They make a high proof version? I'd love to try it!
I really like. A bit rough, but bursting with flavor! I will add it to the list of what I should send your way!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Cool! Thanks in advance...
Really enjoyed the review and talk, Neighbor Jon! From my experience, that Old Ezra Barrel Strength benefitted from having been open a couple of months. A few years back, I really enjoyed the Old Ezra 7yr bottled at 101 proof. It was available here for $22 USD. Thought it was a fantastic value, but ultimately compared evenly in a side by side with Evan Williams White Label Bottled In Bond (at $14). Hope you keep having a wonderful holiday season up there, Jon! Sat outside on my lunch break down here in Tucson while wearing a tan-through shirt. Gotta keep those Vitamin D levels up as long as we can!! Cheers!!
Ok, I might be a little jealous of you weather... but I'm glad we could share a moment of this whiskey. This one is hot, but also hitting some excellent flavour notes for me. Cheers!
Good video. I wonder what your current opinion of this bourbon is. I've heard good things
I have not had it in a while, but really enjoyed it!
In my area of the US, this is ~$40. At that price it's decent enough. For me, I'd probably rate it a 3.5 - 4 because I think it drinks a little too hot / spicy. Especially at only 10% rye. I drink a fair amount of WT Rare Breed and EC barrel proof so I'm not a rookie with higher proof whiskey - but for whatever reason, this comes across hot for me and that heat mutes the other flavors a little.
Very fair. It is hot, but it keeps me interested. Thanks for your thoughts
Have really enjoyed your reviews. Just picked this up for $69.99 and it rang up for $79.99. The guy honored the $69.99 as he said he forgot to update the tag. He showed me on his phone where the state minimum (Michigan) raised to $79.99. Do you think it’s worth that? Is there anything similar at a lower price point? I love the flavors of this one. My favorite bourbon yet by far. But the only other bourbon in this proof point I’ve tried thus far is Rare Breed (which had great flavors as well but was harsher and less balanced).
So hard to get these flavours/proof/price combination. Rare Breed is less balanced, but here ... almost half the price so I can forgive a lot! Booker's is also cheaper here then in most places, so tough to recommend that. Have you had Old Forester 1920? That is a solid Bourbon for me and certainly would recommend.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Honestly I’d probably pay the extra $30 for Old Ezra 7 yr before getting rare breed again. It is really rough (rare breed). The Old Ezra is so smooth and delicious. 1920 is actually the next one on my list!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Isn’t Booker’s super allocated and unavailable? I thought that’s what I had heard. I haven’t seen it anywhere! Have you had Clyde Mays 5 year barrel select? That’s another that’s on my list but haven’t tried yet!
@Kristopher Schermerhorn I am in a strange market. For reasons I cannot explain, I can get Bookers. I have not had Clyde Mayes. I should try to hunt that down.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Wow, I have never seen Bookers. That is interesting! I have heard good things about Clyde Mayes...please let me know what you think if you find it! Have you had Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A122? I keep hearing amazing things about that one. (A122, not A123. I hear good things about 23 too, but it sounds rougher and less balanced). I am trying to decide between ECBP A122 and OF 1920 for my next bottle!
btw, question I've been meaning to ask. Are you comfortable in jeans while in the privacy of your own home? I can never be in jeans or any clothes other than p.j's when I'm at home. Maybe for a video I'd put on jeans but then after the video, the jeans will immediately come off and the comfy clothes will come on. I don't think I've ever had whisky in clothes that weren't just loose, light and comfortable. Maybe I'm in this alone, which is why I ask 🙂
Interesting question. I really like jeans, and have no problem hanging out I them.
