Thank you Tony huge fan and also coach, similar to Jeff fenichs routine, that I've used for years, would only add sir if I May that from my personal experience, anything over 5 lbs is detrimental to your flow of boxing, will most definitely slow punch speeds
I don't understand the routine BJ is suggesting-do I do 3" straight of triceps then go to biceps, etc, or do as many reps as possible then go to the next exercise and so on and keep going for 3", take a break, then do it again?
Yes, I have one question ❓ when are we going to box/spar? And I'm not talking about those absurd classes you rip off the rich Jews for $500/hr in the Valley!😂💯% 🙋🙏
@@Thomas-dm4wu Save your breath. Tony is a scammer using Mike's name without consent . It's called "clickbait" when the title has nothing to do with the content .
Heavy Deadlifts, Heavy Squats and Heavy Push Press seemed to have helped me immensely in terms of punching power, speed and endurance.. There are other exercises and protocols that I follow as well. But those stand out.
I'm a chaplain in schools and use boxing bag and pad work for anger and confidence issues. I see boys and girls really benefitting from the positive message of training. We have a selection of light dumbbells so will be bringing this into the mix. Many thanks
Tony thank u soooo much! I asked you only a few days ago about a video packed with boxer's workout with weights and you uploaded that video today, I m sure this workout is really helpful, not only for boxers but for martial artists as well 🙂👍
No disrespect to the fitness guy, but it seems he thinks that the strength of the punches come from the arms. It would be best to do workouts that involve the twisting of the core, hips and shoulders, like Russian Twists, Ball to Walls, etc. Boxing Science channel here on UA-cam and other Boxing/Combat Sports workout channels (Phil Daru among others) have a better grasp for the right program for Boxing or Combat Sports.
I actually agree with your general point, although at the top level, upper body strength is very important. Take a sport like badminton or tennis - all the pros have amazing weight transfer so having a conditioned upper body might give them that last bit of power in each stroke. If a beginner still focuses on weight transfer, there’s no reason not to work on upper body strength as long as the balance between power from the legs and upper body is maintained in execution.
Exactly right, I've actually been doing this type of workout on and off in my workouts for years but never with heavy weights like he's using no more than three to five pounds Max and I got this workout from Jeff finnick and it's tremendous on building endurance in your muscles but not with a heavy dumbbell that's only going to end in eventually slow your punches down that's too much weight never exceed 5 lb
Coming from a longtime strength training background and having started boxing six months ago, I can say the movement that most resembles throwing a punch (to me) is the Kroc row - which is basically a "cheat" dumbbell row usually used to train your grip: it's like a regular dumbbell row but you pull the heaviest dumbbell you can up with your whole body/hips/lats/legs for 20-30 reps. I wasn't able to punch hard until I figured that out. The explosive pull on one side launches the opposite hand pretty fast if you apply it in boxing stance. Power through the ground and hips comes automatically from focusing on the pull. That's what worked for me anyway.
If you are into this kind of sport it should be clear that ONLY this workout don't make you a good fighter. I think it is a good workout for getting better in don't get tired arms during a fight, and thats what he said in the beginning. Not more, Not less...
"the show muscles are on the front of the body, the goal muscles are on the back side of your body - and and that includes combat athletes. Posterior chain is most under-trained part". Memorable lines help teach a lesson
Carl Weathers when young did a somewhat similar circuit routine. If you search UA-cam you can find out his exact routine. He was trained by a famous trainer named Vince Gironda. He said he did not want to build too much muscle which was very easy for him but to condition himself and burn fat and improve cardio.
With my students, I can't wait to give it a shot. Thanks, Tony! Being a coach is a privilege, and in the future I intend to assist even more individuals in achieving their goals of becoming world-class boxers. I’d like to add one to the list, rotational chest press. Start off with elbows to your side, neutral grip, and push/twist into a typical overhand position at the top, rotate down back into neutral grip. Explode on the way up, nice slow and controlled on the way down. Very good for getting more explosion in your straight punches.
I've been doing boxing only for the past six months or so (religiously, 5-6 times a week). I come from 25+ years of striking martial arts experience so it's not super foreign but I have been noticing some major differences in body mechanics, or stress on certain areas. I also have spent years doing the three main forms of resistance training (power/strength, hypertrophy, and stamina/endurance). However, boxing has been proving a large learning curve (having to deconstruct muay thai and karate stance/techniques before re-learning boxing technique). So, I have not been lifting any weights, and just focusing on technique and stamina/cardio. Muscle tightness is a huge factor with boxing since it has fairly limited movements and striking techniques. This does not make it easy one bit though! That is for sure. In any case, I just wanted to note that I have noticed my biceps extremely sore after sessions. I thought this at first was due to hooks etc. on the heavy bag but also noticed it after low impact days (basically footwork and shadow boxing days). I realized that it was the retraction of the punches. In muay thai, the focus is kicks, or in the very least/most balanced you spread your strikes thrown throughout 8 impact zones. Boxing is two only, so the volume of those strikes is very high. Sorry for the novel associated to my two cents. Take from it what you will!
I’m in the same situation.. came from 38yrs of striking, 50+% leg strikes to doing boxing for a few weeks now… I’ve laid off the weights and need to so something geared towards boxing..
Glad the comments are on fire. I do massage therapy and really like some of the breakdown of the exercises. I think this is 100% an intermediate upper body exercise program. I do something very similar and I am going to incorporate some of these in. Have the guy back and do lowerbody.
I prefer pull ups for arms strength I’ll only use very light dumbbells for shadow boxing and to add weight for holding my arms straight out at the sides making small circles for as long as I can to build shoulder strength. I’ll do heavy squats very low reps and tuns of body weight squats and lunges for leg strength
Power stems.from the legs up.kenetic chain. Core rotation. Power moves. Plyometrics. Med ball work. get on that landmine!. Surely not shrugs... you don't want your traps tension getting in the way of shoulder range of movement and mobility. Traps are activated through so many other pulling movements. Don't need to be targeting specifically
Such a great video! Thank you so much for making this :) It is perfect for me (using light weights) - so informative and the timing couldn't have been better for me personally :)
Always pinch your shoulder blades together when doing these, It stops you in every movement from hurting your shoulders. Plus you dont gotta follow the 3 minutes but its pretty great. And heavy doesnt mean better. High rep low weight really gets a pump happening and i dont care what the studies say i as a lean man have always built faster with HR LW plus you get those ripped lines in your shoulders and massive horse shoes on the triceps
My coach also gives 2-4 rounds of punches with 1 or 2 kilo dumbbells. Doing only the basic punches, jab, right cross, body shots, hooks, no combos beyond basic 1-2, doing everything quite slow paying attention to the technique. Very hard to do, actually)

Definitely wanna warm up your elbows before you do tricep extension type workouts. They can be hard on your joints especially if you don't warm up first!

I'm not so sure about the overhead triceps extensions, I think if your goal is to build solid triceps it's better to not fully lock out your elbows and keep the tension with the dumbbells.
I punch with them and doo like slow shadow boxing it works everything and it trains my body to handle the weight in those movements . But do it safly if course

Love the vid Tony i have been thinking about what kind of workout is best for boxing. Just a tip in boxing good form is key it's the same with weight lifting. start off with light weights and many many reps.
Overhead press and bent over rows should be done with a barbell, and 50 pounds is too light. Drop the bicep curl because it's too isolated (strengthen one muscle, causes injury), instead do heavy rows since they work the bicep and back together. Shrugs should be done with a heavy loaded barbell (in front like a deadlift, or on one side at each time for a great oblique strengthening). Tricep rows OK, I prefer to do them with a cable machine and also involve the abdominals by pulling from the side. Overhead press is the best. Bench press is unnatural and injurious.
This is sort of like a PHA approval heart action work out. And the difference is a PH able to major muscle groups which you find will be a better work out a far better pump for the blood around the body then doing the small muscle groups that you have picked for this workout. Nevertheless there’s something different it’s good to see you’re introducing new workouts. I just think that this guy talks to much that you’ve got there LOL but nevertheless very good thanks guys for the information great work
not trying to be a troll, but it would be insane if all people did was say positive things all of the time. I don't come to this channel for whatever this guy is pretending to be and you did my man Mike dirty putting his name on this one.
Mike Tyson never lifted weights during his professional career. Hell he only did calisthenic pushing exercises. 400 bench dips, 400 push ups, 400 push ups, 400 shoulder shrugs, 2500 declining sit ups, jogging 3-5 miles, 10 rounds of sparring, 4-6 hours of speed bag work, 30-45 minutes jumping rope, daily for 6 weeks before a fight. Quiet frankly the only heavyweight champ I can think of that lifted weights was Evander Holyfield and a lot of people accused him of steroid abuse in that time because he went from 175 to 215 in a year.
@@StephanJobes Actually no Tyson himself and Rooney his first trainer have all given out similar numbers and routines. That's where the articles probably got the info. That routine and his over the top dedication to training is why people called him Iron Mike. The only heavyweight champs that I know of that even lifted weights were Evander Holyfield, Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua........
I'd go old-school training for flexibility speed I'd avoid weights I'm already slow. I'd work a hard physical job for strength endurance crosstraing but each to their own. Arnold could bench 500 pounds but I'd rather be fast efficient.
I probably do 3 weight related sessions a week and 3 boxing ssssions a week when it comes to lifting the weights I’m slow on the movement down and power up fast. The thought behind this is to build fast twitch fibres n be explosive for my boxing as opposed to a body building approach where I feel more bulky. Is this correct and the best way to lift weights for boxing ????? Great video as always Tony mate

not trying to be a troll, but it would be insane if all people did was say positive things all of the time. I don't come to this channel for whatever this guy is pretending to be and you did my man Mike dirty putting his name on this one.
This guy's bicep vein is frightening
Thanks for sharing Jordan
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life John 3 16.’ .
You don't know what Mike did. You just read a random article online
@@jordanslingluff287 nobody does one routine only. That was one of many
Questi modo di condizionare il fisico appartiene al passato oggi è cambiato nel meglio😂
I'd go old-school training for flexibility speed I'd avoid weights I'm already slow. I'd work a hard physical job for strength endurance crosstraing but each to their own. Arnold could bench 500 pounds but I'd rather be fast efficient.
Great vid!
Thanks mate, If u don’t mind, could u please share this vid on ya social media please. Will really help me out :) All good if not 👊🏻
When did Tyson do these?
This is a video on boxing Fitness this is not what many real boxers would do! I stay away from weights!
Nobody does those elbow destroying behind the head dumbbell lifts anymore.
