The Ekar groupset is geared at gravel, while the SRAM with the Eagle cassette is essentially a MTB setup. When fitted with the 10-44 rather than the 9-42 cassette, Ekar is practically on par with the Eagle 10-50 setup when it comes to the lowest gears. It’s the high gears where there is a difference, but arguably a bike used to climb a 30% dirt trail will not be used to sprint at 60 kph. Ekar makes much more sense as a gravel groupset.

I purchased the Pinarello Grevel frameset when it first came out and had my LBS build it up with SRAM Force One. I have always run Campagnolo on my bikes since buying a steel Eddy Merckx in Belgium in 1985 and having it built with Neuvo Record, but Ekar had not yet been introduced until several months after I had gone SRAM on the Pinarello. So I rode the SRAM for over a year and I disliked the single blade shift lever controlling both up and down, and the brakes needing bleeding too often and not modulating very well. I eventually stripped off all the SRAM and replaced it with Campagnolo Ekar. Now I am happy! The Campagnolo Ergo with separate thumb lever to go to a smaller sprocket and finger lever to shift to a larger sprocket are what I have been used to since the 8 speed Ergoshift era. The Ekar brakes are the same as on the Record/SuperRecord road disk brakes. Superb in every respect! I have the 9-42 cassette on Fulcrum wheels, (an off-brand of Campagnolo), Vittoria Terrano Dry 650 x 47 tubeless tyres, and switch between 38, 40 & 42 tooth chainrings depending on where I will be riding. Now, I have the cycling equivalent of a Ferrari! Cost is not a factor for me, the Campagnolo Ekar is just better. That's just my opinion after riding both the SRAM and the Campagnolo on the same bike.

Is it possible to use the same chain (length) with each chainring?

    • @EdwardTBurke-pv3qr
      @EdwardTBurke-pv3qr Рік тому +3

My great friend who owns a small local bike shop could only get the 40 tooth ring on the 172.5 crank from the distributor. So, he sized the chain length for this with the 9 to 42 cassette. I bought a 38 ring and a 42 ring separately for road and off-road riding. I called Campagnolo to ask this question about chain length to them. They said there is no problem with the correct chain length I have and switching between the 42 and 38 tooth chain rings. The tricky adjustment when initially setting up the derailleur is the "B" screw which governs how close the upper pulley is to the cogs. Need somewhere between 1 and 3 mm for Formula 1 instantaneous shifting performance.

Don't forget the Ekar does also have a 9-42 and 10-44 cassette along with the 9-36. I'm looking at the 10-44 since I have a Sram 10-42 now in an 11 speed with a 40 front chain ring. I can always go to a 38 front ring and go 9-42 which will give me more speed. I like the idea of 13 speeds and shorter increments for shifting. I agree with many that have said an electronic 1x is overkill and cost is expensive for the Sram.

Really, back from electronic to mechanical? First one I heard of. A bit off topic here, but I'm seriously curious - what would tempt you to switch from 2x11, the simpler 1x13 aspect or the (maybe) easier field maintainability for offroad or longer trips? I ride Ultegra RX mechanical, and find that 2x still has the widest range possibility. Switch simply from 12-25 to 11-32, 11-36 or with a longer chain I ride 11-42 with 50/34 up front. No goatlink whatsoever needed. For serious bike packing I'd opt for swapping the chain rings for those subcompact ones that absoluteBLACK make for Shimano, 46/30 or 48/32. (Though I must admit, I never appreciated before how ergonomic Campagnolo hoods appear, and the component design is beautiful.)

Isn't electronic gearing that great as everyone who used it says?
Plus 1x still has the disadvantage of more inherent cross-chaining, and how often I'd need that mechanically inefficient 9T cog, I will have to test.
But still at that price I can upgrade to Di2 and still save some money, even a complete group costs the same as the Ekar group at the online stores here in Europe.

Hi David, after visiting a local dealer yesterday for a Trek or Ridley I thought let’s watch some earlier reviews again (this one and the one about Classified).
Despite the current lack of components, the dealer also said that they genuinely have more standard components in stock from the most use brands like SRAM and Shimano. So in case of a problem he said, they always have to order from Campagnol/Classified with the drawback of delayed deliveries. I guess (read…hope) it’s just a matter of time that these ‘new’ brands will be more common. Of course it can also be the lack of experience of this dealer with the Campa/Classified components but I wonder if other people get some sort of the same kind of message.
What’s your experience with using those components and getting things serviced/replaced (e.g. in case of broken chain) in reasonable time, is it just matter of time? Anyone else has good experience with using the ‘new’ components?

I tried to watch a GCN video of a bike review and immediately turned it off after I noticed the 8 commercial interruptions every 2 minutes on the time line! The add placements may not be directly under their control but holy crap, it's already a paid commercial I'm trying to watch. Why is it so heavily monetized.

@@woosim1003 Yes, I agree that this guy will make it big time someday, hopefully sooner than late! On another note.. The reason as to why a youtube video, such as GCN, has so many commercials is because of sponsors, sponsors, & yeah.. more sponsors! GCN is even sponsored by Orbea, just so they will advertise there bike brand more often than other bike brands. So don't fall for all that marketing PS. Because at the end of the day popular name brand companies usually care more about business profit than they do care about giving people good quality parts for there money's worth!
Also, youtube has now decided to add a commercial in any video that's more than 8 minutes long even. WELL THEN PAY FOR UA-cam PREMIUM IF YOU DON'T WANT COMMERCIALS. Me: "NO, I will NEVER give in"!!

I've had two Sram 1x systems (one on a MTB, the other a CX) - and they're fine. However, for me, there is a downside; the jumps between gears. Not as much as a problem off road, but on road it's a nuisance - sometimes you can go from spinning to grinding.
Really interested in Ekar for my Gravel bike, which I haven't yet bought.

Do you think 1x is just for Gravel, in a one-bike setup which groupset would work better on the road with a different cassette?
Also, I would have liked to hear more about the different hub standards and wheel choices, is it still pretty limited for campag?

I was going to add weights, but SRAM doesn’t publish weights for this setup and I didn’t want to take it all apart! Both these groupsets are quiet and in my experience 1x makes no more noise than 2x and in some cases it’s quieter because there’s no front mech rub. Comparing the price between a mechanical system (essentially second tier tech since Ekar is not close to Record) and a top tier electronic system isn't fair at all. If you compare to the combo of Force AXS and second tier electronic mountain systems it's a much more fair comparison in terms of equipment . At that point the price is reasonably close, and the premium can be chalked up to SRAM being fully wireless.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Ekar, but I would 100% trade the 9, 10, and maybe 11 tooth cogs for more single tooth spacing in the teens and maybe one larger cog at the end. To me a 12-40+ 13-speed cassette and a 38+ chainring would be great. I'm just not sold on the necessity of the super small tooth cogs for the average person riding off pavement.

I know this is a year old, but important to note in price comparison is that it's also an XX1 rear derailleur when you could pay half of that for a gx eagle axs derailleur, even the xo1 axs derailleur is ~$200 less. Match that with an xo1 chain rather than an xx1 chain and you have a much more solid value per dollar.

I think he used mallet absolutely wrong. Mullet is 29er wheel front and 27.5 rear MTB. Has nothing to do with a group set setaup. Sram offer lower price electronic gravel group sets. Campy is also very niche product and usually more expensive to repair and replace.
