Took me forever to articulate how Shida animates: He inbetweens montage editing. NOW, you MIGHT know Montage by reputation (fellow commenters) as a series of film clips cut together to juxtapose each other and create meaning. Some of you MAY KNOW how animation works with key poses drawn on extremes and the inbetween animation that brings the animation to life through supporting drawings. BUT NORMALLY, in animation you got one camera angle or one planned moving camera angle the animator works the character within. In an attempt to simulate film and editing, if the animator needs a new camera angle, he will cut to a different angle. BUT SHIDA, instead of having the cut occur, he in-betweens the transitions. The camera is thrown a billion miles an hour and space is bent and broken, but it gives the action in a scene a nice............ ebb and flow of crashing waves aesthetic. BUT this technique has its limits. Especially if we look at the Sailor Moon opening. IT LOOKS GREAT when the sailor scouts are making explosions. Hit does not look great when Usagi and Mamoru are romantically in a paint mixer. Because he is inteweening the montage transitions, what would be a normal close up to one lover and then another comes off as............well...............not romantic to say the least.

When OP wants to, it looks absolutely amazing. It's unfortunate that in order in order to get to those moments, people have to sit through an anime that is riddled with long stretches in episodes where effectively nothing happens.

Hot take: I really don't like Shida's signature parts in OP. The way everyone is wobbly to me makes it hard to believe the impacts are hard hitting.
