Too much about independence, freedom, self determination, when now the overwhelming narrative is about collectivism and socialised softness, obedience to government.

What an amazing film. If anybody doubts of Brad Pitt's acting abilities after watching this movie, they are delusional. The most perfect cast ever for the most underrated epic romance film in history.
it would have been more powerful if he hadn't got married and had kids to spite Susannah. The only person he ever loved. If they had changed that part it would have done better. isabel served no purpose other than that of promoting huge age gaps and ageism which is a huge Hollywood agenda. She was also arrogant and obsessed with a man as a child and even when she is still growing at 20. He ditches his sons which shows it was really a facade of trying to move on. he tested Susannah who suffered for her whole life. She too acted out a facade of moving on. they messed up big time by getting him married to a child and having children. That part really ruins the story. Susannah should not have committed suicide either. It was just so cruel. other than isabeland some minor characters the movie, soundtrack and cast were great. In the book isabel is even younger. The author was very uncreative and annoying if you read the novella. It didn't show love and loss. It showed that with samuel but in the end tristan was made to look like an evil pig of a guy who ruined lives.
if there is ever a moment when Brad Little acting is questioned, the look he gives when he first sees his father's condition is enough of an answer. No dialogue but completely communications his emotions. Moment of greatness.

Anthony Hopkins was brilliant while playing second fiddle to Pitt. Playing a man who suffered a stroke, Father of boys who's mother left their lives. My hat is off to that great man.
And she didn’t really love Colonel Ludlow. Alfred says it to him when he compares himself to his father. “Like you, I love a woman who doesn’t love me back” Something along those lines

Why do we always love the ones who leave more than the ones who stay? This may be an unpopular opinion, but I always felt tremendous sympathy for Alfred (Aidan Quinn). He was always the bad-cop brother-dependent, responsible, loyal and an upstanding citizen-yet his father rejected him as a sell-out. Tristan was a heartbreaker in every sense of the word and ran away for years, leaving Susannah and his ailing father behind. Yet here he is sweeping back into town like a hero. It all came too easily to him.
I think you dont understand how tristan was, he was way more fragile than he looked, especially inside, he was hurt, and it inhabited him more than any of the other members of the family and yes he leaves, broke hearts, but only for healing himself, and not to destroyed those who loved him. Believe me I know what I am talking about, I did the same, and I needed to go, I needed to cut any contacts with my family, I needed to heal and it was not possible at home. My parents eventually understood and the girl I was seen found another man to love, but could not resist to still loved me when I came back, and yes, once your family understand that you are broke inside, and suddenly after years decide to come back, because you finally was able to find hapiness, you are the hero kind of. You come back a grown man, responsible etc... but still fragile and they get it now, and so are more concious about their children in general. I hope it helped you to understand
