I do think that Tommy has enough talent to have been discovered eventually, but it was surely Dennis that made him a star and most definitely not the other way around.
Tommy took Dennis songs and made them rock. Tommy didn't need Dennis at all. Dam Yankees. Shaw hears something like a car making a strange noise and bam to much time on my hands.
Styx is a cash cow for Shaw, but he wasn’t an original member! If he feels Dennis’s songs messed the band’s success, then he shouldn’t have the band play the songs Dennis wrote! I mean like shaws songs, but Dennis’s. songs were more defining for the band!
Yes, Tommy made a lot of money when he joined Styx but he also wrote a lot of great songs that made the band a lot of money. Dennis wrote a lot of great songs too....before he started writing candy ass ballads like "Babe" and "First Time". Tommy likes the earlier songs that Dennis wrote such as "Grand Illusion", "Queen of Spades", "Castle Walls", "Come Sail Away" and others so he and JY play those songs but they don't play Dennis's later songs because those aren't as good as his earlier work. I agree that earlier, Dennis's songs were more defining for the band like those that I mentioned. But Dennis's ego got the better of him and he tried to take the band where the others didn't want to to. I believe he may have also felt his status in the band being threatened by Tommy because TS could write some dang good music too. There are 4 or 5 albums right before Kilroy that are incredible, the best era of Styx IMO. There are a couple of good songs on Kilroy but Dennis's ego and insistence on the theatrical crap for the tour on that album took the band down. Dennis should have saved the songs the rest of the band didn't want (like Babe) for his solo work. JY made the comment that Jim Curlewsky (I'm sure that's spelled wrong) leaving the band was partly due to he and Dennis being at odds. In a way Dennis did to Styx what Roger Waters did to Pink Floyd.

Cmon, Styx, don’t be like Pink Floyd…😢😩 My only question now is who gets along better: Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung or David Gilmour and Roger Waters?
In the Styx story Tommy is Roger Waters and like Roger tours ad nauseam. Dennis DeYoung (like David Gilmour) doesn't like touring much now. Ironic that Styx without Dennis started touring at the same time Roger Waters started touring again once David Gilmour walked away from Pink Floyd for good to raise his kids with his wife of now 30 years Polly Samson. The manager of Styx Charlie Brusco is a POS and he is the same POS who ruined Lynyrd Skynyrd (ask Artimus Pyle).
No.. Dennis is Roger Waters the main founder who went in a direction that others didn’t want to go and was eventually booted out of his own band. Tommy Shaw is David Gilmour while not an original member once he joined the band finally had its identity and sorta lead the band after Dennis departure.
Tommy told a story that I thought was funny as heck: When he was touring with the Damn Yankees, during their set the intro of "Babe" would start playing through the speakers. To which Ted Nugent would ask "Tommy, is there something wrong with your guitar?" Then Ted would grab Tommy's guitar and smash it! Hilarious! Well Tommy and Dennis happened to run into each other at a hotel or somewhere and Dennis was pretty hurt by that. Anyway, Tommy agreed he wouldn't do it again and said he's kept his word. I think there is still some deep respect between the two of them.
I get disappointed when bands that I really like get torn apart due to stylistic clashes. I like both the rocking songs of Shaw and De Young's songs. I like the variety that these different song styles brought to their music. There is room for both styles.
Fuck no! Shaw’s songs were always more emotional and straight to the heart. Boat on a River, DeYoung never wrote anything like that. He was talented but also pompous. They are better off without him.
Just my preference but I liked when Styx rocked and Dennis did it too. Their all getting up there put Dennis is creeping up to80. I heard him play and sing but he didn't hold it til the the end of the song. He put together his own and with guys that looked like JY and Tommy. They did a lot of songs for him. He also had a a bad like CYO who would play by them selves. He would never make it through the number of concerts Styx does He said he only plays with his band occasionally. He has lost a lot of weight. He always wore his wedding ring but it is much too big. I wish he had done what JY suggested Come with the band , play and sing like you are well enough. It may have built up his strength and people would love to see him. A situation like Chuck did although he would have more. strength.
I saw Styx on the Paradise Theater tour two nights in a row. To Dennis’ credit the theatrics on the first night were mind blowing. It was one of the most amazing shows I ever saw. I was so excited to go see it an again the following night. This is where his theatrics fail. The show was so scripted that everything was literally identical on the second night, right down to the movements around the stage and the spoken dialog. The second night felt more like a theater performance than a rock concert and having seen it already, all the excitement was lost. In fact, the disappointment from the second show took away from the memories of the first one. Tommy was right. I wish I had only seen it once and kept the amazing memories.

Dennis thought Styx was a rock group and it really wasn't. At least by the blues based standard that most people associate with rock. I get that Tommy wanted to be more of a part of what he calls rock and roll. However, Tommy was in a supporting role in Styx. Despite his many short comings, Dennis is very worthy band leader. Tommy always wanted to make Dennis something he is not instead of support what he does. Instead of name calling, they should just agree on creative differences and call it a day.
Simple. Dennis De Young wrote the Hitsongs, which made hit albums for Styx. What exactly did Tommy Shaw write ? I can't remember. The truth is that Tommy Shaw, is nothing without Styx. Dennis De Young has proven that he can survive without Styx. In fact, De Young could have made it without Styx, but Styx could not have made it without Dennis De Young.
Dennis took the money and ran. Tommy left and Styx fell apart and every one in the band had enough of Dennis and Dennis took the money. Styx is better than ever and the band is happy. They are selling out every where they go. Just saw them again for my 19th time. Simply put it wasn't just Tommy who had enough it was the full band that had enough.
Dennis de Young is close to 80 and doesn't have it anymore. He did a song in a video and could barely make it to the end.He is not doing many concerts with his on band. He could never travel and really didn't want to. He admitted he had to take some time off early on because of touring. When he'd go on tour the whole family would fall apart. This is his words, it was almost like I had a nervous break down. Everyone who worked with Dennis and he was well now among the music community as the the most narcissistic person among them.

To some, Styx could be a hard rock band.....until the singer DeYoung ventured into something else with songs like Mr. Roboto and Come Sail Away - which the hard rock band audience didn't feel as comfortable with. So, audiences were conflicted and moved on to better defined genre's. I should know, I was one of them.

As a kid and my friends included at the time it was Pieces of Eight with Great white Hope, Blue Collar Man, Renegade and Queen of Spades and Tommy and JY' hard rock guitar that got us rockers that were listening to Nugent, Kiss, Aerosmith, Boston and Foghat into Styx. The only ones that liked the other styx songs were the preppies and the nerds. ha

I've seen both live multiple times since the divorce. I like them better. Dennis solo it was excellent as well. he broke out "Castle Walls" it was awesome. With the split I feel it allowed them to go a little deeper into the catalogues. I do wish they would drop a few more songs of the setlist besides "Babe"
If I want to hear ballads, I'll listen to Air Supply. If I want to watch theatrical music, I'll fly to New York and watch Broadway. I've seen Styx in 2022, 2023 and last month. They have never rocked harder or sounded better. And I will see them again in 2025 as they continue to sell out venues.

@@Liararus.100 Well, talk to Dennis DeYoung about it because it came out of his mouth. He said Tommy had a big coke problem and he begged Dennis to get back together and tour because he needed the money. I didn't say it , Dennis did.
I always kind of laugh when it's all about Tommy being the rock guy and Dennis being the theatrical or ballad guy. Dennis wrote plenty of rockers over his career with Styx. Yes, there are always two sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth but a lot of times it just seems like sour grapes. Shaw and Young weren't complaining I'm sure when the money was rolling in from their only #1 single 'Babe' which Dennis wrote and still to this day they will not play. Out of reluctance both Shaw and Young gave in and starting playing Mr. Roboto, an album they thoroughly hate and which they have said they would never make another concept album. But, lo and behold what do they do in 2017. Hmmm.... The debate about Styx, much like Journey will go on forever it seems. But without Dennis there would be no Styx.
I love Tommy's account of the big outdoor TX jam concert with it over 100 degrees and Tommy dreaded going out to perform the moronic kilroy show and said, We are going to get killed. These people have been in the sun all day, they are drunk and they arent going to want to stand through a long theatrical play. You dont want to piss off drunk people. haha Paraphrasing.
Oh, please. DeYoung made his own bed with his intransigence and ego. The Roboto tour was financially devastating, they'd have been sunk forever if DeYoung was allowed to continue pushing those high-theatrics road shows that NONE of the other band members were fans of. The album itself distanced a large portion of Styx fans on it's own. Whatever DeYoung brought to the band in the beginning, he was rapidly eroding. The video makes it sound like the only valued members of the band were Shaw and DeYoung, and that Styx hasn't done anything of merit since then; none of which is true. The current band members all still recognize and give credit to DeYoung for all the talent and success they had before DeYoung became a megalomaniac. They honor this and they honor the fans by continuing to play all the songs from that period as well. They'd be disrespectful to the fans if they didn't, even if some fans can't see how execrable most of the Roboto album songs were. I fell in love with Styx after first hearing the Pieces Of Eight album. While the ballads are great, it's the real rock songs that make the album. "Renegade" was penned and sung by Shaw, with James Young on lead guitar, and it nailed Styx to the charts. A ship or a music group succeeds when all it's members are working together in a spirit of compromise and integrity. Styx would have lost their rock edge and faded away if DeYoung had continued commandeering the ship and driving it with his own ego, as if the rest of the band didn't matter.
@@frederickwarren4158 To each their own but Styx was a pop band with a few songs that were rock. Their were many bands in the '70s and early '80s that fit that bill.
Styx started out as a cover band. They became a progressive style rock band once they added J.Y. . Problem was before they hit the bigtime, the progressive tunes weren't charting or catching on well with the public. The song LADY was between ballad and progressive rock and caught on well with the public. That's why Deyoung was able to navigate the bands direction. Tommy Shaw as talented as he is would've had no tenure in Styx if he botched singing the highest parts to LADY a song by Deyoung. A song recorded 4 albums before Styx asked him to join. Styx has no hits whatsoever since Gowan took Deyoungs place so Shaw and JY have no bragging rights . Deyoung has nothing to prove . Styx's biggest hits are by Deyoung. Love or hate him , it's true.
@Ron-c6i They are a "pop rock band." In the late 70s, early 80s, they were voted by gallop polls, the most popular band in America, especially with teenage girls . I remember that to this very day. That most likely was due I'd say to Shaw being in the band. He's short and he looked very young back then. Image played a little part in that, I'm sure .
Renegade what is the best song everything else was glam rock well done glam rock, but still it was not for the average Rock ‘n’ roll audience, and they bought the records. Dennis was a prima donna and it was hard to hide this reality. The audience know it and in the end rejected is big head.

Jeepers, I'm near the end. My initial comment was flawed. Minus the repetitive statements, this video could have covered the same points in 4 minutes, 5 at the most.
It's a shame that Dennis couldn't produce his theatrical material as a solo artist instead of trying to drag the unwilling members of STYX down that road. The foundation of STYX is and always has been built on them being a solidly musical rock band not a theatre troupe.
Let's be clear, they split when they released their last album together. The band wanted to go on tour but Dennis was dealing with a virus that impacted his eyes. He asked them to holdoff going out for a few months but the other members didn't want to wait and questioned if Dennis was sick. Everyone can say that it was about kilroy was here that caused the issues but they had regrouped and all went out with DDY,JY and Tommy shaw. They had a very successful tour and no further mention of any issues until Dennis couldn't go out and they replaced him with Larry whose ego is the size of the stage. You can research and find that all parties stated the same reason DDY was left out. Water under the bridge. Unstyx can go out and call themselves Styx and DDY can go out but he isn't Styx either. Both are now cover bands. If they cared about the fans they would do one last tour with DDY but their egos won't allow that.
Tommy Shaw IS Styx, not De Young. All the best music comes from him & JY, not Jai, know what you're talking about before you text. As far as Shaw not being "Hard Rock enough," please! He's not trying to be Ozzy, he rolls with his own rock, & rock it is.
Tommy joining Styx had much the same effect as Nicks & Buckingham joining Fleetwood Mac... at about the same time. The injection of creativity and musicianship elevated the band's success to its highest points. The band became successful because of Tommy's contributions, not because of some quirky theatrical representation. JY and Tommy were correct: alienating the concertgoers and LP purchasers is something to avoid. Bands that neglect their fan base to pursue some concept that isn't well received is just narcissistic and a quick road to failure. Tommy went on to become part of the killer supergroup Damn Yankees, and Dennis never realized the same level of success he enjoyed when Tommy was in Styx. Its telling, too, that the band, without Dennis is still touring and delighting crowds. Tommy is an underrated talent and an excellent concert experience. If you haven't seen him and have the chance, you must go. You can thank me later. When I saw them in '79, it was the Pieces of Eight release tour. I loved that album except for one tune: Boat on a River. When Tommy performed that tune acoustically in the concert I got goose bumps. It was such a soulful rendition and just highlighted Tommy's artistry and talent. Only time that has ever happened to me at a concert and I have seen a lot!
All in all, styx would never be if it weren't for all of them. I don’t appreciate the Don Henley approach, where Don Henley calls all the shots for the eagles and makes the majorly of the money. 😊. In styx it was more about control

Tommy took Dennis songs and made them rock. Tommy didn't need Dennis at all. Dam Yankees. Shaw hears something like a car making a strange noise and bam to much time on my hands.
Shaw is a hypocrite and they now have done 2 concept cds that don’t rock.
Crash of the Crown is an awesome album.
There is no Styx without Dennis, period!!
C’ mon Tommy!...Go back to Damn Yankees!! So much better!!
The record label payed them millions to never record again. True story.
this told us nothing that we haven't already heard
Even though they disagree. They still played beautiful music together 😅
Excuse me, but for a long time they didn't play some of them, THE FANS KEPT ASKING FOR THEM!!!! Mr. ROBOTO SUCKS. I realize its up to each ear, I happen to love Tommy Shaw, he sings way better than DDY!!
@ but tommy isn’t an original member, he’s in cohoots with JY, to block Dennis, one of the members that started the band, and I think it’s a down right shame a member who started the band can’t play with em’, while they make all kinds of capital off songs he wrote! That’s evil and unethical!
@@mikescully6972 They did Not want to play that music, he had a choice and Tommy is a full member of that band, maybe not from the very beginning but sure as hell paid his way!!!!!!! I've been watching this STYX for a long time and ddy has Never been missed by anyone i sat next to!!
@ well that may be how you see it, but we both know Dennis founded the band, and Tommy(who came in from the outside)is cashing in on Dennis’s songs, as a songwriter myself I understand the integrity, and baring my soul in a song ( like songs he wrote for his wife), and to see someone who you wrote songs with and played with, and turn around and stab you in the back, and take your music and make money off songs you wrote that made the band ( their only #1 Babe , and mr.roboto did hit the top 3)chart and sell millions of copies , that is robbery, Tommy’s a good guitar player and songwriter, and singer , but he didn’t get to where he is without Dennis!
STYX are a great band to see live ,they put on a great show.Highly recommend anyone who hasn’t seen them to definitely check them out.
'Styx' isn't STYX without Dennis. They should have renamed themselves Styx II.
Can we have real people narrate anything anymore? Dennis ix Styx.
Jouney, Van Halen, Styx... they all suffered the same fate with lead singers that thought they were bigger than the band! Money and ego are hard reminders that rock and roll can be brutal!
I'm with Tommy and James. Never miss them live
Many of Styx's hits were written by Dennis De Young. Without him, they just aren't the same band.
They aren't the same band, they're BETTER. Don't get me wrong, I love DDY but he wanted THEATER not RNR. They are All BROTHERS now in Styx and That's what is important. When you have to work with someone and Travel with them, it helps to get ALONG with them.

@@paulgodbey304 Wrong, the difference is Roger wanted nothing to do with Dave & PF anymore. After being insulted repeatedly over the years by classless JY & Tommy, Dennis still wants back into the band he made great, even if it's just for one more small tour, for the fans. Too bad because it would be huge, much bigger than the county fairs and large auditoriums they play at now along with other bands they need on the bill to help sell tickets.
3:49 - That is not STYX, it is a cover band DeYoung put together to tour and play "The songs of STYX" - DeYoung is in the center but that is not JY and Tommy, those are cover band doppelgangers.
That is true. I just watched a video of the concert and I have to say, I was pretty impressed by their talent.
@@RockinSG and their look, as when I first watched the video I thought it was Tommy and JY at first but then I realized they are doppelgangers. It really helps these tribute bands if they look like the original band members, as they are easily "accepted" by those in attendance.

@sunsetcaptiva8573 they are both coverbands if what you are saying that it has to be all originals.
I have to agree. The Cover Band is touring, and I've got tickets for a March concert at a casino for "has been's" in Auburn, Washington.
Don't blame Dennis as Tommy Shaw is Ted Nugent's side kick, people get older, and they mellow out.

One of the greatest guitar players can probably the best American band
Neither one they both hate each other and That’s A Damn Shame Especially With Waters and Gilmour over 40 years of Hate!!!!!!
Dennis DeYoung is Another Roger Waters Great as a Band then it went to hell when Roger started taking Over Leadership as in Dennis also?
Dennis is rigid, arrogant, and authoritative, having a psychological need to control others.
Whole story sounds stupid and immature.

A situation like Chuck did although he would have more. strength.
The band is now in their 70s and ability to maintain stage shows are almost done. Just saying.
Have you seen them lately? They are far from done. They kick ass.
@@bosstime2010 I seen them during Paradise Theater. That was kick ass.

Tommy Shaw had a successful solo career?
Dennis is the missing puzzle piece Styx’s new music can’t come close as far as success
Deyoung should do music for Broadway. He's so schmaltsy

I think you are confusing rock with hard rock or metal.

It's a shame that Dennis couldn't produce his theatrical material as a solo artist instead of trying to drag the unwilling members of STYX down that road. The foundation of STYX is and always has been built on them being a solidly musical rock band not a theatre troupe.
DeYoungs songs and vision led them to the top. Before and afteer Shaw

Don Henley: When you write and sing 99% of the band's hits and you have also had a huge solo career of hits you should be the boss.
