I've got Nova desktop & SN2. They sound alike. But there is notable difference. SN2 sound more smooth/warm/rich on the same patches due to new DAC's & redesigned FX's section.
@bodgecat thanks. sure; it's 2 saw oscillators tuned very close within 2-3 cents, i believe the filter is set to 12dB lowpass; an LFO is affecting both pitch and filter, which is governed by the mod-wheel. An EG is affecting the filter and amp on each keypress for a soft attack. Finally some delay and reverb in the FX section to polish it off.
WOW !, The best Demo, of a synth, Iv'e ever seen. No over done, Dialouge. A complete, overview, of an Amazing, Synth. I'm sold, Iv'e got to get one. You know your stuff. It makes a nice change, not to hear, the familliar, Piano, or funk sound, like on the Juno Demo's, People want to hear, synth sounds. I had a Juno,.I sent it straight back. This synth, beats it, a million times. Well done, Thanks for posting. LOL .
when i say 'hi-fi' it means only relative to other UA-cam videos at the time I made it. compared to the original 24bit .WAV, this compressed Flash file that UA-cam uses is pretty wretched. Vimeo has way better sound, but it's like a ghosttown in comparison.
Great overview, been looking for another set of sick nasty knobs w/ serious tweakability to add to my set up w/ my prophet. I think i'll keep my eye out for one of these :)
wow, cool V.H jump patch :-) still a fat sounding keyboard! I remember drooling after one of these when the first supernova came out. Beats the pants off most of the softsynth VA attempts!
Cool sounds and demonstration work. The Supernova keyboard can do a few things that the Supernova rack can't do - - interesting though. I am very happy with the rack version - - your video gives me ideas for adding extra controlability. Cheers
that's another sweet track! no, i haven't done much more of Ray Lynch's sequences/arps. I played a lot of Tangerine Dream-influenced patches and lines in this video.
@CoolColJ24 good question - it has one of, if not THE best interface/UI ever in a polysynth, and does 8x parts independently. And unlike the VirusTI, the SN2 actually works correctly in mutli-timbral. otoh I feel the new Ultranova is an improvement soundwise and is not so bulky, but less user-friendly and not layer-able.
@maccagrabme Based on what criteria? i have a Juno-6, MKS70(JX10 in a rack) and Jupiter-8. As a VA very few others come as close to classic Roland as Supernova. Not Nord, Korg or Alesis. I wouldn't get rid of the Rolands for a SN2, but if you don't want old analogs then a SN is a decent choice.
That's effing wicked, and hay, ur playings not too shabby dude. Nice post, thanx. (I play a Roland D-50 and keystation pro-88 with ivory at the mo which I still haven't worked out how to properly get all the dials and faders working with but you know, give it a few weeks, months etc. Looking for a third synth for the rack and this could bloody well be it, long time pining for either this or a korg z-1 but I'm leaning towards the SNII after ur demo.) Cheers. P
hey thnx for the better understanding of the different nova's. I just bought one its the the maxed 48 voice polyphony version. On its way. THNX AGAIN ! stay easy. Cant believe i found it on ebay in mint condition(hoping). Hey when u get the time post some more vids, maybe with some drum patterns to go with it! Im gonna subscribe since know i got one, to see your next vids on this piece! You did justice on for the piece lol thats why i had to get one..! stay easy culture
@DEJONEZ79 um, it sounds metallic, because this is an old 2007 video with very poor audio quality. In real life, and outside of UA-cam, it sounds much, much nicer.
at some things: sounding a a little bit more like a Moog is one. high OSC FM rates are another. EG flexibility is maybe a bit better on Ion, but just barely. maybe you like the filters more, but to me they're just different - Ion has a bit more variety, while the SN has slightly better analog behaviors.
106 was an affordable synth from the 80's. Many people use it and its not too hard to get. but don't expect it to sound fat, it has 1 OSC with added chorus. If you get a Yamaha DX7 and the 106 you will definatly get the sounds of the 80s. Some mention that the juno 60 sounds a bit fatter then 106. If you got money, you could try get Prophet 5 or an Oberheim OB-Xa or OB-8. Some are mounted with midi.
the drums are very much like the novation drumstation, but with expanded sound-sculpting ability and wicked 'drummaps'. it will make synthetic piano sounds - not "realistic" but still musically nice. the organ sounds it can make are excellent, however, and can vary quite a bit. maybe in the next video i'll do some organ sounds.
you have an A6 already? I've had mine for 6 months now...freaking unbelievable. I sold my SN2 for cars repairs, and now I have a V-Synth instead - with A6 and MoogLP it is a phenomenal combo :D. the virus is nice, just not my thing. cheers!
hi, thx for watching :D i made that patch from two simple saw oscs: one is straight pitch mod/detuned ~5% by sample%hold LFO, the other modulated by pulsewave at interval of major 5th
continued: imho SN beats the Ion in: 8-part multi-timbral w/ discrete outputs, polyphony (!), interface/ease/control, kick-ass arpeggiator, much better FX quality and flexibility, classic Roland JX/Juno emulation, and lastly all-around musicality. apples and oranges, really. i feel it's much better to use both for their respective strengths than to favor one to the exclusion of the other.
nova i haven't, but it's supposed to be close, but iirc i think the nova uses only 2 DSP chips vs 8 in the SN2, whatever difference that makes. &fmt=18 used to enable stereo when default is mono. since fixed.
8:24-9:00 is fuckin lovely and the closing ambient is beautiful is it your own or is it a track someone else produced and you are demonstrating the supernova II through? Thanx for the vid Shaft ;)
haha, yeah it's the "inevitable Jump sound" you hear everywhere - EVERYBODY knows it and that itself is pretty amazing, enough of a compliment to poke a little fun at ;-) I love old VH btw and I remember how fresh that whole 1984 album sounded back in the day
Hey there, great video. Some cool patches you've made there. I'm interested how you made your Mellow Sawtooth Lead at 5:19. Can you shed some light on that? Cheers!
i just no read your response so the novation supernova II is the most recent version of this series with an upgrade right? Keep posting vids. doing a great job ! culture
thanks for the kind words Passion4Music, patrickytting, seambuster, coneman3 & ARP909. mouimen - i haven't played a KS4 but know a few guys that have one and like it very much. If you already have a good MIDI keyboard then you can get most of the Supernova's power by adding the desktop Nova.
THnx for the demo!!!!1great board ! im using the roland G7 and the X station 49 and the ms2000B ive been looking at the you tube vids on the piece just stumbled on it. Question since i know nothing about this series of novation boards: Is there a difference between the Supernova II and the pro ? or when you talk about the pro your talking about the SUPERNOVA II ?(same board or pro is the upgrade of the supernova II im a little confused since i know nothing about this board.could you clarify
@shaft9000 Not at all, I'm simply comparing the sound to the Junos that I own and a Jx8p and I can tell you now that this synth doesn't have the warmth or fatness and I can actually hear that in UA-cam videos. If you think they are close then I'd love a video comparison as I might have to pickup one of these if I can get a Roland Jupiter and JX sound for little money. Cheers
Thanx Bro -___- I will be looking into getting one of this badboys this summer hopefully I can find one used... I am working for a Virus TI2 and the Alesis a6 and this would be a nice overlap yeah.. I am sending for a poly evolver today I found barely used and with the jmox 888 we will be UNSTOPPABLE Moohaahaaahaaahaaa....... Peace and thanx again for the inspiration~*~
Do you think NL2X is the best sounding? I really wanted one because it soudned amazing in the store but I went cheap and got a Nord Rack 2 ... Now I'm kinda wanting to sell it because it sounds better than anything else I have by far but I thought I remembered the 2X sounding even better, *exactly* like the sounds on some 80s records in terms of clarity and DAC resolution - & the FM had an incredible amoutn of nuance & details to it..
again before i buy this board im assuming the Supernova II is the pro am i right by saying this or the pro is a the upgrade of the supernova II. Just want to get the most advanced Supernova II. Your input will really help my purchase thnx again for the vid stay easy culture
start with two saw oscillators, detune one a bit, filter @ 12 dB Lowpass w/ some overdrive, EGs wide open, and add a little delay. how you play it makes as much difference as how it's programmed - be sure to double octaves on the bass notes.
"otoh I feel the new Ultranova is an improvement soundwise and is not so bulky,"..... Nope!! I own both of them and the ultranova is going up for sale soon. I hate the damned thing. Apart from the fact that it has some performance controls and few more wave shapes available (You can re-create most of them with skew and formant anyway) It's only a development of the SNII software. The same as the KS was. I have one of those too. BTW I bought my SNII as a result of watching your videos :-)
Even if the audio in this video really is Hi-Fi there's still just no way to hear the resolution of a good synth through a PC... It's definitely true for the nord series
for the pre-CTA DM, you want a Jupiter-4, and nothing else will do. for DM from CTA thru BC, you need Emulator2, Drumulator, Minimoog & ARP2600. And a Synclavier :D after that... well, just call Flood I guess.
Your welcome! Not enough people take the time to actually let you hear what the gear actually sounds like. Instead it's usually 60 dB of hiss and not much else.

I have an A-station I bought for $200. I have a $2500 DotCom. Tweak them just so and they sound just like my ION. Or a Casio pt-1. All of which sound like crap on UA-cam. And if you're recording, I'm pretty sure your going to bounce down to CD rates at some point. You can go Ford vs GM vs Chevy vs Honda all day on this stuff. Its just a waste of time. That sawtooth lead seems very remniscent of the Minimoog in "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."
Cool stuff!
'Pro' just means 36-voices vs. the 'regular' SN2 is 24-voice. There's also a 'Pro-X' w/ 48-voices. All are 8-part multi w/ full FX per part.

this sounds more analogue but i still prefere the nord and access VAs although this does some classic sounds
beautiful video btw

@buzzboxed Yep, thats what I'm talking about, warmth. I think the vsti's are capable of the sounds of the Nova so I'll stick to that and a Juno or JX.
kin ell !!!
you're welcome :D
I have made a second SN2 video, just click the "shaft9000" link up top on the right side of this page, then click the golden picture.
ms2000 is a great little board. if u program it right it can sound like a $million$ :D
As for 'pro' or not, it's just the # of voices, that's it.
I got mine for 1100 USD on E-Bay 2 yrs ago. Don't bother with the rack version, the keyboard is entirely where it's at imo
Somehow K-station sounds better.
And KS synths got trouble with clicking.
I would pick a nord lead 2x instead.
you should be able to find one in very good or better condition for about $1000 USD

Yeah Its a shame that novation nowadays only makes crappy midicontrollers (with some analogue modeling )

@shaft9000 Nothing like a Juno or JX here
yeh i think 350 pounds is about 700 dollars
