It is a great movie, and the story moves along beautifully. The ending that we got, hit me hard. Deep down, he kept his humanity despite transforming into another creature. It was and is, a beautifully tragic film.
This easily one of the greatest sci fi movies ever made. It felt like a throwback to the old sci fi movies with a morality theme and was entertaining. Excellent visuals and a moving score added to this movie’s excellence.
I remember watching this in the theater. My wife and I decided to go to the movies and took a chance; decided to watch this given we really did not have any idea what we were going to see when we got to the theater. We really enjoyed this movie, and we encouraged our family and friends to go watch it. It's too bad a sequel was never made, because the ending left you with more questions than answers, yet that does not take away from this film being a sci-fy classic.
I know Wikus wishes for it but I didn't see any reason to look human again as in the ending I saw only the appearance change. Still the kind hearted person he was deep down
I do love the sub-plot about the black goo; which implies that the Prawns are not what they appear to be and possibly were once different sentient creatures that have been captured/enslaved and genetically altered by some super advanced hive mind aliens (maybe) and the ship that came to Earth has somehow lost contact with the rest of the hive fleet, which is why the Prawns are no longer under the influence of the hive mind and their love of cat food; which is the 'nutritional' food substrate that they are engineered to crave and is fed to them by their captors. Great film with so many layers.
I too wanted a sequel or a prequel long before -- but now, I'm kind of glad they haven't, because Blomkamp has gone down hill, ever since -- down a very steep hill, unfortunately... He would need to team up with Jackson and his wife, Fran Walsh for the sequel to be decent in the future.
@@cyborgparrot1996 Yeah, it got moderate reviews, but the film was not scripted or written by him... His own writing is cringe, unfortunately. Understandably, he is an FX guy after all, and an awesome one at that, which is why D9 looked so real despite it being CG heavy with the Prawns. Anyway, if a sequel is in the works, I hope he teams up with Jackson and Walsh again -- and not go at it alone.
Minty, I’ve been following you for years and I’ve never been bored with your content. For the sake of those of us who still have an attention span beyond 10 seconds, keep going ! We need you! Still loving what you find , pumpkins for example!
You just keep doing you bro. Found you a couple months ago and highly enjoy your content. And ya it’s a shame we never got a sequel. It’s a great movie
I just watched it again about a month ago in 4k and was amazed at how realistic the Prawn CGI still looks. Much better than most new movies I've seen this year even.
What would the sequel be about? Wikus gets changed back to a human and says "Hey! We gotta stop this apartheid thing, man." The Prawns return and get their revenge by committing genocide against the South Africans?
I remember renting it at blockbuster, which outlet, and what the chick behind the counter said. I really hadn't heard much about it and saw it on the shelf, "is this any good"? Oh yeah, it's a really good movie, and she said something about prawns. Me: prawns? Her: yeah, it's what they call the aliens, kind of like the N word..
Minty!, i am always very grateful for your 10 things videos. You certainly do your research on the behind the scene references. District Nine, has always been one of my favorite movies, I am really excited that you did this video!. Watching this makes me want to revisit my own copy of the Movie. Always hoped that a sequel was created.
Funny how they highlighted how the victims of apartheid ended up victimizing the prawns. Goes to show human nature and prejudice isn't a "whites only" issue.
Shame we didn't see a Neil Blomkamp do alien 5 instead we got Prometheus, also shame we didn't get a part 2 of district name. This movie was epic on so many levels the social, racial an government/military marshall law undertone. Loved the narrations from the co-workers of vikiius and the towns people. Also Kinda like X-Men movies this movie is about race, plus the weapon of the aliens and mec suits, and over the top action really hit on a great cinematic level, great video as always Minty have a great weekend mate.
I've always found this to be a very underrated movie. I thought that the effects and story were brilliant. I've only just pressed play on this episode so I don't know if you mention it or not but Neil Blomkamp's vision for his follow up to the first two Alien movies looked and sounded very interesting and intriguing. The concept art was especially fantastic and definitely worth a Google 👽👍👌
IED hit one out of the park with this movie. When it came out many of us were stunned that they pulled off so many CGI effects shots so well. Yes, some of the CGI is a little wonky in places. But on the whole it's really good, and in some shots it's amazingly good even all these years later. The first viewing in the theater was stunning. I remember seeing one of the test reels (the interrogation) and was blown away with how good it was. Back then CGI would really take you out of the movie. This is the first film I remember where that didn't happen and in an effects heavy film like this one it was an amazing achievement.
I love Disrict 9, it blew me away when I first watched ut and was easily on eof the movies I recommended to everybody for the next few years. Blomkamp's FX studio have put out some amazing shorts over the years too. I'd love to see some of them get turned into full feature length movies.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and it really got too me. So real and raw as well as terribly sad. It's a movie that will always be in my heart even though I doubt I will ever watch it again. I just can't handle how tragic it is. Although, I would be interested in seeing a sequel made. Great review as always.
There could be 2 movies where a prequel is shown that the aliens are actually humans who in a top secret mission left earth years before and came across a planet that turned them into the prawns which is why the main character turns into one of the aliens and they just wanted to return home after years of basically exile. And then there could be the sequel where we find out if the main character turns back to being human etc. Quite a few possibilities. I love the grittiness of this film and think it's amazing storytelling.
Minty is such a legend ...been following from early days an has finally made a video on one of my favourites! Once again great editing and humour and interesting info ...love you mint ..keep doing what you do !
I think the marketing deserves a mention. I actually remember seeing alot of cool adds and websites for it leading up to the release that got me really hype for it.
I think of the time when this movie came out I was always watching trailers and knowing at least something about any movie I was going to go see. This had been one of the rare examples where I went in knowing nothing about the movie and was just going off of a recommendation. It made for a very refreshing experience when I was expecting something more along the lines of Independence Day.
My son told me to buy District Nine, so I did. Wasn’t disappointed either. It’s great sci-fi and a fave to be watched multiple times. Thanks for your review, Minty. Learned a few things this evening. Keep up the reviews. I watch them all! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦🦐🦐🦐
Hey Minty! Thx for another great video! You covered now almost all of my favourite movies, now PU-LEEEEEZEE DO THE BOONDOCK SAINTS !! And snatch... :-) Grtz from Deutschland! Llap 🖖🏻
Thanks for the video Minty. this movie always reminded me of Alien Nation. The movie of course, not the TV series. Hmm, if only someone were to do a video on Alien Nation🤔 LOL!
This was amazing. D9 has always been in my top for scifi. Knowing that it was based on real life just blew my mind. I did at the time of seeing this in the theater think it was hitting close to humanity irl in a weird way. Great movie! And vid on it!
Thank you, Minty. Resist TikTok at all costs! I have never downloaded the app and any time someone sends me a TikTok link I tell them to stop or I will block their number. China owns TikTok and they couldn't explain why their app is allowed to scour every bit of every electronic you touch.
Thank you Minty for not making tiktoks. Honestly, I don't trust it's origins nor do I like the ease with which misinformation is passed to our impressionable youth.
This movie set the big blockbuster movie to shame how good and realistic fx was for just a fraction of price . I watch this movie once a year never gets old
Minty, your mic when you voiceover the "fact" , it sounds absolutely fine. But when we get the viewangle of you in frame talking about the extra things, the mic is quite high arould 12-13khz. Maybe turn that down 4-5dB to not be so bright and hissy :) love the videos regardless!
This was a great movie, and I can think of few so impactful on first watch. My issue is when watching the movies Elysium and Chappie, I found them to be quite samey, the rhythm of the 3 movies feel so close that if you've seen one, you've seen them all. Great review.
I can’t tell you how much I HATE UA-cam pushing shorts more than videos now.
I refuse to watch shorts
The avg attention span in 2004 was about 150sec, in 2023 it's about 47sec. That's a like 1/3 of what it was 20 years ago...
Agreed 👍
It is a great movie, and the story moves along beautifully. The ending that we got, hit me hard. Deep down, he kept his humanity despite transforming into another creature. It was and is, a beautifully tragic film.

i couldn't agree with you more. over all it makes one think about how you wanna treat other or others you.
That was an amazing achievement for a budget of 30 million. As always, thanks Mark for finding these nuggets of interest for us.
When Wikus goes "f it" and decides to help Christopher at the end is straight up one of my favourite bro moments in film.

I always thought Wikus’ wife gave up on him too quickly. If he ever got turned back into a human, I hope he never went back to her.
100%.
She bit into that propaganda apple so fast. Screw that stupid lady she doesn't deserve him. Hopefully she gets directed while he is gone.
His status dropped instantly and as such so did his worth to her family and her
@@Satans_baby_daddy...which reinforces the movie's message about the problems with an economy and society with very strong class divisions.

Please never go the way of tik tok minty, you're too pure
Sharlto Copley ad libbed nearly all of his dialogue, which is truly something in and of itself.
I’m glad you said it because I do not possess the vocabulary to articulate it like you. Bang on 👌🏼
Love that

A sequel is in the works believe it or not, currently in the writing stage.
@@GhostOdysseyBut he directed Gran Turismo, and that was pretty good.

I'm pleased it hasn't has a sequel tbh.

What an excellent film.
Watched it in the cinema, with no idea what it was about.
Totally blew my socks off!!!! Top entertainment.
A sci-fi masterpiece. How is there no sequel ? If Neil has lost interest, the line to direct goes around the block.
Same with Dredd! Yet they make sequels for other dumb movies like Avatar
What would the sequel be about? Wikus gets changed back to a human and says "Hey! We gotta stop this apartheid thing, man." The Prawns return and get their revenge by committing genocide against the South Africans?
@@mr.pavone9719 ....it would be about liberating the distrct 9 camp...alien tech style!
Maybe Disney could buy the franchise and put a very diverse cast in it, with a strong independant lesbian of color in the lead role?
Would it not depend on who has the movie rights?
Luv ya Minty. You always do your research. I learn more about films than I do with other channels. Respect.
I really loved this movie. Yeah it's a shame that no sequel happened, but even still the story was good, enjoyed every moment of it.

As a South African this movie has such a South African feel to it. It has a true to reality feel about it unlike the Hollywood style of SciFi movies.
I absolutely love this movie to bits. " Fockin prawns man" is also my go-to phrase when I need to do a SA accent.
Very underrated film. The cgi was better in district 9 over 10 years ago and half the budget of the marvel and DC films today

I loved this movie when it came out and saw some of the weapons and other props when I was at the Weta Workshop in 2019
