My MIL was a young teen at the time of the tragedy. She was supposed to go to the circus but went swimming with friends instead. (She wasn’t supposed to) Her father went searching for her among the dead and wounded and came home crying because he couldn’t find her. She blithely went home not knowing about the fire. Her parents were relieved to see her, even though she had disobeyed them.

Thank goodness the boy had his scout knife and was intelligent enough to simply cut through the canvas rather than fighting the mob trying to get out. That kid saved all his friends, too. Lots of boys carried pocket knives back then; I did, too.If our shoes got muddy at recess we would scrape the mud off with our knives. Boys today would probably knife each other. Times have changed.

An interesting side note…After reading about the fire & living in CT I was moved by the story of a mother with 2 little boys who perished in the fire. I decided to put cemetery boxes on their graves on the anniversary of the fire. I went to the cemetery but had to search for their graves. It was a beautiful day & the cemetery, which is quite large & a park like setting, had several people out walking, rollerblading & of course visiting graves. I had parked the car & spent over 2 hours searching for this family I had only read about. As the sun was setting I sat on a bench & wondered out loud if I had somehow gone to the wrong location. Realizing I was now alone, with nobody around & the temperature cooling, I went back to my car & decided to get my jacket. It was in that instant as I opened the passenger door I let out a gasp. There right beside the car were the 3 graves of the family I was searching for! I carefully placed the cemetery boxes on each grave & when I was done a freezing gust of wind came out of nowhere that gave my shivers. I had the distinct feeling my gifts were very much appreciated.

Barnum and Bailey stopped going to Hartford after the fire. In their place the Shriners and their circus filled the void. As a youngster would attend. It was held at the Hartford Armory. The one in the same place where they used as a morgue for the victims of the July 1944 circus fire.

My GREAT grandmother, because of a fire, barely missed taking the 'inagural' cruise of the famed 'starlite' cruise line. She was arriving to the docks by horse drawn carriage and because of a major fire, the carriage had to go around and be re-routed. By the time she made it to the docks, the ship had departed ... only TEN MINUTES earlier. She missed it.
She would soon hear accounts of its tragedy, that would become known to the world, as the 'Titanic.'

Charles Nelson Reilly developed a fear of sitting in a large audience since the Circus disaster. Very informative! I had no idea Madge had a connection with that Connecticut circus fire. Several years ago when I worked at the local library before retiring, I came across a book by Stewart O'Nan about that fire. It was riveting! And included pictures. As a matter of fact there was one that showed the children that had perished lined up side by side on the ground. (Their little faces and bodies covered).
Like you said, Scott, that tent was a tinderbox- with the roof soaked in gas and paraffin and then before staking the tents, used even more flammable materials! 🥺

My mother was a student nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT when the circus fired occurred. She never told me about the circus fire until I was about 12 years old----old enough to realize the gravity of the fire and the victims. She was working in the ER at the time, and when she told me the story for the first time she broke down and cried. She spoke about the men, women and children who came in with severe burns all over their body. She said many of the victims the staff couldn't save----some were already dead when they came into the hospital and others died waiting for treatment. The screams haunted her for the rest of her life, and she spoke about the intense emotions the staff felt, trying to save people the staff knew would probably not make it. Children were crying for their parents, and parents were screaming for their children. It was a scene of chaos, raw emotions and despair in many cases. Her nursing school class regularly held class reunions every few years in Hartford, and all those nurses were working when the circus fire occurred. Some of the nurses went into the military while others remained in the state. My mother stayed at St. Francis for a few years, working in the OR as a surgical nurse and then a private duty nurse. She gave two interviews about the circus fire, and as she got older she couldn't deal with the memories, The smell of burned flesh, the terrible cries of anguish, the lost relatives and friends, and then the mounting numbers of dead affected her deeply all her life. Her work in the ER that day, no matter how gruesome it was at times, solidified her desire to be a nurse. She wanted to serve and help others, and she certainly had an ordeal by fire that day, the day the circus clowns cried real tears.

Miner was best friends with character actress Eileen Heckert (they lived in the same area in Ct. It was local to NYC for acting work. I think Vivian Vance lived close as well - in her final years) . Heckhert won the Oscar for Butterflie Are Free in 1971 or 72. But she is best remembered as Mary's world-travel Aunt Flo on the Mary Tyler Moore Show . (The World-traveling aunt / uncle was a cliche after that ; Jan Brady's aunt also a World traveler as were all the Bewitched aunts / uncles / doctors , etc. LOL.) I'm certain there were MORE TV "world traveler" relatives ; none come to mind) . Heckert's son wrote a book about her life called "Just Outside the Spotlight" and it's great . One of the most memorable stories had Eileen in tears after Bette Davis humiliated her at a dinner party (!) and there is a GREAT story about a then unkown Martha Stewart who was just a lady who ran an upscale bakery in Ct. and nobody really knew who she was yet.

Back to Miner: She has a small but memorable part in 1968's "The Swimmer" (directed by "Mommie Dearest" director- Frank Perry.). "The Swimmer" is an odd "fever dream" of a movie with a PUNCH in the gut "shock ending" . "The Swimmer" was filmed in the sun drenched back yards of all the upscale "cocktail set" party- people in the late 1960s -- so for that alone it's a great movie . Frank Perry has an impressive body of work -- all his movies are odd , realistic , uncomfortable, well acted , and saturated "Aquarian Age" back drops & real locations that are typically suburban - with the exception of the wonderfully depressing movie "Diary of a Mad Housewife" filmed in NYC in 1970. Isabelle Sanford plays a maid and an early Alice Cooper band plays at a groovy psychedelic loft party!)

We had our own version of Madge here in Australia in the 70s and 80s ( maybe even later) and the actress who portrayed her for years was forever associated with that role. The Aussie Palmolive ads are probably on UA-cam as well.

I’ve got to admit the fire made me sad. I’ve never heard of it before. I can’t imagine the chaos and the smell as you’re trying to escape.

Wow this is such a sad story. It’s almost asinine, to think they used gasoline and hay/ wood shavings. Like those night club fires where they put gasoline or something flammable on some decorations and locked the windows and doors , so they wouldn’t try to get in for free. So many sad stories from back in the day. No fire safety

The reason you see no oils in Palmolive dish liquid is because its detergent rather than soap. Most of what is purchased as soap now is actually detergent.

Scott: Have you ever heard of "Little Miss?" She was one of the unidentified victims that perished in that great circus fire, and her postmortem photograph once displayed at the Ringling Circus Museum in Sarasota, Fl, still haunts me to this day. I grew up in St. Petersburg, Fl, just north of the Bradenton/Sarasota area, so as a kid I frequently visited John Ringling's mansion, the Ringling art museum and its accompanying circus museum. Along with wonderful exhibits of grand circus wagons and other memorabilia at the circus museum was a small display devoted to artifacts from that tragic Connecticut fire. Upon one wall of the exhibit was a small yet haunting B&W photograph of what the museum called "Little Miss," clearly showing her darkened and lifeless face, scalded hair, and closed eyes. To this day I'm unable to remove that haunted image from my mind. Sadly, she was never identified. How was it possible that a 5 year old child did not have a single relative or acquaintance to identify her? Unless they, too, perished in the fire.
Scott, thanks again for this video and your continued efforts to bring alive the often obscure yet fascinating stories about death and the underbelly of human behavior.

@@sourpatchkid394 Thank you for responding. After reading your comment, I pulled up many newspaper articles including a 1991 interview with "Little Miss 1565's" alleged Mother. So now I'm even more confused, because the Mom and several relatives stated that Eleanor Cook was a tall (for her age) 8 year old girl with at least 8 permanent adult teeth. But the coroner determined that the body of Little Miss 1565 was much shorter, less heavy, approximately 5 - 6 years old, and she had only 2 adult teeth. Even though the body of that little girl was eventually disinterred and reburied next to her siblings, I'm not convinced that it solves this mystery. Do you, SPK, have additional information that could add understanding to this tragic event? Thanks again.

    • @thevintagekitty
      @thevintagekitty Рік тому +6

@@dukeofhaas Yeah, it's a strange story isn't it? Even the Aunt and Uncle didn't think the body was her. Apparently, The Connecticut State Police forensics unit said it as "probably" her based on a hair sample. I guess it is too late to do a full DNA test. That's the only way to prove for sure. Strange story though. Apparently, there was so much chaos that bodies were released to the wrong families.
