@@AlligatorAli exactly. Dude is a genius in boxing but he's still a huge dumbass. When he tried it I couldn't breathe laughing so hard. Then he went and had to turn his whole body and I was on the floor.
In the manga, a bit later in the story, Sawamura claimed that the most dangerous type of punch is the one that comes outside of your realm of consciousness, the one you practically cannot fathom even being thrown, let alone anticipate and react to it. Miyata managed to pull this off against Randy Boy Jr. because he is a prodigy in both technique and speed. Aoki, however, is capable of creating this kind of state in his opponents' minds practically at will, all through carefully building up to it and choosing the correct moment to execute. Instead of disappearing from the line of sight of your opponent using lightning-fast footwork, you simply create the perfect deception for the opponent to move their line of sight for you. Aoki is a fucking genius.
@@cherryapple2986 Miyata never did the look away. He just managed to get the same result as Aoki by moving so fast that he disappears in front of his opponent's eyes and delivering a devastating counter. Not being able to see him throw the counter, his opponents are hit with a punch that they aren't even aware of, and it does great damage. If I remember correctly, Miyata vs Randy is around chapter 815.
The scary thing is that there _is_ a psychology behind it, and Aoki figured it out- exploiting basic human instinct to look in the direction that another fellow human being is looking. Ippo noted that it happened to him alot whenever someone like Coach Kamogawa entered and exited the gym, and people would averted their eyes to greet him- he would turn and look with them as well. More importantly, Aoki had to bring Imai down to that state to begin with, a point where he wasn't throwing punches every half-second; that's why he spent the previous rounds allowing Imai to wear himself out. This is why Takamura's attempt didn't work- because he used it from the start without understanding why it was effective in the first place.

Jersey Joe Walcott's knockout on Ezzard Charles is a good real-life example of the look-away. It's hard to see the look happen but you have to understand that it has to be incredibly quick to work.

The last thing his opponent sees is him quickly dashing within periphery, before a sudden strike brings them down. Takamura actually understands the capabilities and the necessary conditions that need to be fulfilled in order to use the look away at its max potential. He uses the look away, probably the full body look away at that, causing his opponent to get distracted, and for Takamura to crush them with his right straight.
