Actually in Canada, at Starbucks, you can’t just tap and go. They make you take the machine (Covid is over I guess) and go through the tipping menu. I always say no thanks because I refuse to tip at a drive thru. I tip at the very minimum 20% every chance I get because I really appreciate service workers and servers but I cut off at drive thru. Tipping has gone too far if you ask me but I still do it because I understand the system.

Ehhhh.. I'm gonna get a slap for saying this butteh, I'm a bit on the "tipping in the US being nuts" if I'm honest. That doesn't mean I don't tip, cause the US has such a different thing going on, and you're right, it can and does make a huge difference if your wage in service is as bad as it can be. In Europe though, a tip of 20%+, is a gesture for great service.. Not an automatic. I'd still tip 10-15% regardless, but in the full knowledge that service staff are already receiving a living wage (anything less than minimum here is illegal, so is the same as any other working wage).

Even though the waitress only brought water & we serve ourselves we still tip just to be courteous. The drive thru thing chins is talking about is we have a popular coffee restaurant called Tim Hortons and even though we are just ordering coffee , everyone leaves those workers a tip whether it b 2 bucks or wtvr they serve hundreds of ppl in a shift. They used to keep their own tips but now the drive thru & cashier's in the front split all the tips evenly @the end of a shift.
Of all the money chins wastes on takeout is it really that much to ask to leave a couple dollars tip ?? She's just being her usual selfish self

They don’t necessarily get to keep it. It depends the rules the restaurant/ establishment has set out. They can also put it on your cheque and tax you immediately. It’s not black and white. Some provinces have server minimum and some have a minimum across the board. It is a provincial issues and not a federal ( Canada) issue.

Now about the tipping. I find this incredibly odd. It doesn’t happen much here. Servers are paid a minimum $20+ per hour, plus 10 days paid sick and 4 weeks paid holiday. The prices are factored into the meal and aren’t very much different to what you would pay with tips. Also this guarantees a minimum income for workers so they can pay their bills. The US hospitality industry has gyped their workers a long time. However I do think this is about her being stony assed broke and wanting more money for food

I agree with her with expecting 20-25%. That’s ridiculous. These restaurant owners are getting away with not paying sufficiently. The wait staff has to rely on the graciousness of the customer. Not everyone can eat at home. There are unhoused people who still work and need to eat at restaurants. The idea that they can’t go to a restaurant because they can’t tip 20%.

That’s because the restaurants in our country doesn’t pay their employees well. Those tips makeup the majority of a waiters paycheck. They work hard to get those tips and they deserve it. Without them, there would be no restaurants. Your country isn’t like our country when it comes to how our economy works.
