Representation and mentorship are so important. I'm 32, a black woman working behind the camera and I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing without seeing Ava and Dee and Issa and Lena and a few others, working behind the camera and telling stories that no one else was offering or had the vision to tell. I had no idea that she had this connection with Michael Mann but I'm so glad to see the two of them together and see how far she's come and grown into a beautiful and brilliant director.

Ava grew up in a middle-class suburb, went to UCLA, has millions of dollars, and endorsed Biden despite his role in the 1994 Crime Bill that threw countless black people in jail that was the basis of her documentary. She doesn't represent anyone she claims to speak for.

I don't see her having connection to him. Mann never made movies a woman can relato to.

So glad to see Michael Mann finally get some of his flowers; he's a "criminally" underrated director + screenwriter. Ava became his mentee with him even knowing it until this discussion. Priceless.

I haven't seen Origin the movie yet and can't wait to, however Ava has allowed grief and trauma to become a place that those that have endured it doesn't have to be afaid, ashamed or robbed of their identity because society thinks your feeling's and experiences aren't warranted. It doesn't remove the strength to change it. Thank you ❤. Thank you David Mann for all your work, understanding and knowledge ❤

Two of my favorite directors together! Miami Vice with Jamie Foxx & Colin Farrell is grossly underrated & deserves to be revisited. A few years back word was Ava was going to helm a documentary on the life & career of Prince. Please let that happen!

Thank you for ORIGIN which I am so looking forward to seeing. For me, it's a testament to your commitment to make films that can be world-changing centering Black women. For that, I am especially grateful.

I’m going to be honest, i know next to nothing about Ava, but thats also why this is a brilliant pairing, such uniquely different, almost polar opposite filmmakers, makes for the best discussions. Any fan of either will find out about a sort of filmmaker they might not usually be gravitated towards.

This is the pairing I didn't know I needed. I would have never connected Ava DuVernay with Michael Mann though I think they are both brilliant directors. I now see how Mr. Mann influenced Ms. DuVernay. Both are creative geniuses who pulled me into the worlds they create through powerful storytelling, great acting and excellent moviemaking. The Last of the Mohicans and Selma were the films that made me a fan.😍 I love their unique vision, intensity, realness, humanness and always look forward to their projects.

I was scrubbing through the interview to find a certain section where Ava spoke about Mann’s combo of spectacle as well as human center in his films……as I checked to see if I’d found the right point in the interview, I suddenly realized that many, many times the video would land on the camera facing Ava as she was peacefully nodding in understanding…focusing, listening…learning. So cool!
What a beautiful, humble, dynamic and brilliant soul Ava D is.
    And Mann is legend.

The great director and ... well Ava.
I watched yesterday "origin" and I couldn't believe how horrible this film is.
The film talks about important topics and is very ambitious, but the director has no skills and fills the film with funny scenes as if taken from cheap TV documentaries. A terrible film and the ultimate proof of pretentious Ava's lack of talent.
