Basically, Disney was the only company in the time share business who just came out and said "you're spending money on future vacations and nicer accommodations." They succeeded because they were the only honest people in an industry known for lying through its teeth.
The ad that played before this video was about timeshares. I actually sat through a couple of timeshare pitches (not DVC) about a decade ago and they really were high pressure time thieves. We had one guy trip and fall over during our tour and felt bad about it until the second guy did the same thing. Apparently they think if you are sympathetic to them you’ll spend thousands of dollars.
You honestly make some of the best Disney videos on UA-cam. Simple history and info on topics which many don’t cover, all in a easy to watch format. Love it!
I’m A DVC member...I bought through re-sale. Saved a ton of loot and for the price of nice car payment over 5 years I’m good on Disney trips through 2057. The rooms for DVC members are wayyyy nicer than regular rooms. You get a washer dryer in your room too. Plus discounts on food and merch. Best investment ive made in a long time. If you can do it and are thinking about it get in sooner than later. Price of points go up every year 😬
I have a question for you rob, How did the Disney pins become popular or like where did the origins begin. I've been so curious and also love your videos lol
Without waiting for next weeks video, they’ve sold pins for decades, but I think the trading culture was born from Olympic pins. I remember though seeing pin trading boards at my local MLB ballpark in one of the shops during the 90s. Back then, most Disney pins were $6. In 2001, Disney set up a massive pin store under a giant sorcerers hat in front of the Chinese theater at their MGM park, in celebration of the 100th birthday of the undead Disney. Soon after, Disney Pin Trading was heavily promoted, all over the parks, new pins all had the official pin trading logo (rendering all older pins technically untradable) and prices rose.
Great timing! My husband and I have been talking about joining the DVC over the last couple of days. It just makes sense for us since we plan on visiting WDW multiple times a year in the future. Thanks for the information!
I have some close friends who sell DVC and it’s adorable to almost everyone with great perks. I recommend at least checking it out and getting the tour.
It isn't something I'd ever do (while I'm fascinated by Disney World, I don't think I'd want to vacation there that much), but I have a former coworker whose parents are members, and they seem to like it a lot--he's benefited from the perks.
Nice overview of the history of DVC. Definitely a low pressure sales pitch, which was always my biggest turnoff with traditional timeshares - I literally spent years on the fence before I bought in - and so far my only regret has been how much more it cost me by waiting so long ($85 per point when I first considered it vs $135 when I did it and at least $165 now).
Jesse Myers I would buy into it so quickly if it wasn’t wildly unaffordable. So many of us students have an incredible amount of debt but I would personally buy in if I could
Great video. You're right, when Disney gets ahold of an idea people hate, they make people love it. Timeshare pitches suck, but when you focus on the guest experience, it makes it just that much better.
I have taken time share sales pitch 1) I was offered ice cream, limo ride and 50 dollars 2) it lasted 3 plus hours 3) The salesman lied: he explained contract law wrong. After pointed out his mistake, he reuse to admit his mistake. 4) was ask to leave the meeting 5) NEVER asked to join THO The ice cream rocked
Great Video Rob! I don't know if it was from the Get go or added later, but they did offer DVC members park admission for the first 10 years or until 1999 or something like that. Given the way admission costs go up, it would have been a pretty sweet perk!
I’m so glad my husband surprised me with a DVC membership for our 25th wedding anniversary back in 05. My husband is nearing retirement and we could not afford to take a Disney vacation without it.
I bought into the DVC in 2001. My children were age 9 and 3 and we had been to WDW a few times and my wife and I liked the idea of giving our kids some incredible memories. We never had ANY regrets! The difference between Disney and other time share companies is like night and day. My wife was at WDW with the kids (I stayed home and worked) and she went to the DVC presentation. She liked what she saw, but told the sales person, "I want to show it to my husband before we make a decision." Other time share sales people WILL NOT let you leave the room before saying yes (preferably) or no (and they will do anything to prevent that). The DVC rep said, "No problem," packed up the materials and handed them to her. She told me this and I was dumbfounded! We liked the point-based system and the no pressure sales pitch and signed up. Every time we were staying there, our original sales person would call at some point during the trip just to say Hi and make sure we were having a good time. As long as you understand how it works you can't be disappointed. Plus, the DVC accommodations are unbelievable. We usually stayed in a one bedroom condo in the Villas At Wilderness Lodge. It had a full kitchen, free laundry facilities in the room, a whirlpool bath in a separate room from the bathroom, two TVs and a DVD player. We could borrow movies for free in the gift shop. My kids are grown now and starting their own families. They are both talking about buying into the DVC themselves. I no longer own my DVC membership, but the good times we had when we still had it will stay with us as long as we live.
We love DVC. Interesting promotion they did when we bought ours - if we bought a certain number of points (which is how many we wanted anyway, it wasn’t a ton but a good start) they would comp your entire current stay. Just so happened that we were there for a big trip and were staying at the Grand Floridian for 12 days. Ended up being free lol
We really do like our DVC membership. And there's a light at the end of the tunnel as the max you can have one is 50 years. You also won't find people trying to dump them for $1 on Ebay along with them throwing in a gift card. It will take a few years to break even. But everything after that is gravy. Especially with the going rate of rooms at Disney resorts.
The ol' Eisner special! I wonder what it would've been like to get a pitch back when they started and were clearly trying *not* to be like other timeshares...I really did feel pretty pressured when we got our presentation, which is unfortunate, because the more you try to get me to buy NOW, the more determined I am to walk away from the deal.
trickycrayo..... up front buy in of DVC points $18,000 to $24,000...maintenance fees on those points over 50 years $50,000 to $75000 . Total cost $68,000 to $100,000. Nice to sock that money into a retirement account.
Yup. The thing is, if you're going to go every year and stay at a Deluxe with your family...sure, you might save money! If you're an independently wealthy person who can afford it either way? Knock yourself out! If you're me, who's happy with Values and Moderates and is certainly comfortable, but *not* independently wealthy? No chance it's worth it, even if I could afford it. But the guy we had reallllly tried to do the "now I know you're not stupid..." angle with regards to trying to convince us it was a no-brainer to buy and I was like OH BUDDY DON'T EVEN.
Fifty years of vacation fun paid in full. My kids are enjoying it now and when I am gone they will have something to look forward as a family together every year and not have to pay out of pocket plus discounts, special events, park admission perks (I can't say it's a secret),special member cruise and discounts .for us it was worth every penny
I bought one through a resale site and it was wildly cheaper. Especially if you buy at a a low point resort outside of Florida and then use your points in Florida. It is still an official DVC contract, but often less than half the cost.
In all honestly I prefer making these types of videos rather than the Minecraft stuff. So while I generally subscribe to the "never say never" notion, I don't currently have any plans to return to the game.
My folks went to Vegas and got lured into a timeshare presentation but rather than just take the free meal voucher they actually bought one. 4 years later and they haven't used it once.
I just want to say that the example you showed at 2:00 can’t be more than 10 years old, Sands Bethlehem wasn’t even being built until around the time the first Transformers was filming (they used the old site for scenes from this movie)
Loved this one especially since I’m a DVC member! Would you consider doing one on the origination of Doritos? Apparently they started in Disneyland...thanks as always!
Is DVC successful? Yes, but only in some respects. They have a tremendous problem getting people to become members at properties that aren't tied to a Disney resort. Disney's Vero Beach resort was initially supposed to be about 3 times larger, but they couldn't get people to buy into the property. They also have issues at Walt Disney World where DVC only resorts like Saratoga Springs sell much slower than properties that are tied to an existing Disney hotel like The Contemporary and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa to the point that they scrapped a DVC resort because Saratoga Springs was selling very slowly. The land for that resort became Disney's Golden Oak. They have no land to expand in California, and while the property in Hawaii is successful, it's also the most expensive to maintain. Back at WDW, they are running out of new properties to develop, which is why we see the reshuffle of space at Caribbean Beach for a recycled idea from a resort that was originally supposed to be one of the original hotels across the street from The Contemporary. So while it's been a success, they haven't had much success outside of WDW, and that runway is getting pretty short.
I know it’s not the DVC... but how are other hotel chains (I.e. Hotel chains/timeshares ay Bonnet Creek) allowed on Disney property? Is there a lease from Disney? Does Disney sell off land within its “gates”?
Watching this video remains me of other of your video "What Does a YEAR at Disney World Cost? " Would buying DVC be cheaper if I wanted to stay at Disney World for a year?
I’m not a fan of timeshares. I married into one my wife had been pressured into buying and cannot get rid of it. I personally like to go where I want, when I want, when I can afford it. Assuming that I wanted to vacation in Disney every year, I suppose this system does sound flexible but the question that comes to my mind would be about inflation. Disney loves to raise prices. Already the Orlando timeshare I’m stuck with offers more space than DVC has available, for less money. In the purchasing of a point system, can Disney not inflate the value of a point? For instance let’s say 1500 points (made up numbers) at the time of purchase gets you a two bedroom at your home resort. Next year does it cost 2000 and you need to up your points (more money) or squeeze your family into a one bedroom?
We got sucked into a timeshare presentation on our Honeymoon. It was supposed to be a tour of a new mountain lodge and we would get a gift card for participating. It turned into nearly four hours of holding us hostage after we repeatedly told them we weren't interested in making that kind of financial decision on our HONEYMOON. At some point they offered us a free night stay for any of their properties. Well when we tried to redeem that it turned out it was only valid at 3 of their properties, only one was within reasonable traveling distance for us and it wasn't a place we were interested in visiting. It was a nightmare and now because of their behavior we have warned all of our friends about the company. I don't understand how these tactics work for them. All that to say DVC is the only vacation club/time share I would ever consider! I wish I had been an adult back it was only $80 or so a point!
Ive been wondering for some time if DVC is right for me. Im a solo traveler that now plans to go every other year to WDW. Ive been to WDW 6 times. My first solo vacation was 2008. Since then Ive been to WDW 2015 and 2017 solo. I am going back next year. My question is if DVC is only geared toward families. Im trying to do everything I can to make my vacation the most magical it can be. Love your videos ty.
Rob do you think U.K. will ever have a small Disneyland. And I do realise that Disney land Paris is meant to be for all Europeans but I feel like Disney is growing and growing enough to make more lands. Especially in U.K. as we love Disney and have done a lot for movies, music, production etc, maybe we won’t but I would love to that they may suggest it.
In all honestly, probably not. I think the UK is close enough to DLP that they would only be cannibalizing their own parks in competition. I suspect by the next time we see another international park (which may be well over a decade from now) it would be somewhere further from their other parks, like South America.
Why it will be a while before they remove rockin rollercoaster first of all it's awesome second of all it's one of a kind it's the only place at Disney you can go upside down so that means they would have to replace with a clone and I doubt that would be very well received if they just cloned it so that's my hope and theory cause I've only ridden it once and really enjoyed it the first time so there I'm done now
The point system is confusing....really takes some training to understand. a good rule of thumb if that if it hard to understand thats done on purpose and is a scam. My husband and I have run the numbers six ways from sunday and no matter what you will lose money by buying into DVC. we went to the pitch during our cruise on the wonder in dec/jan 2018....the pitch was indeed low pressure and we did win the raffle which was nice.....but all it takes is some simple math to realize that the winner in all this is disney, not the buyer.
1991???? Are you sure??? i remember going to disney in 1989 (i have a childs admission from the last year incould have a childs admission with my photo on it too). And my parrnts being talked to about a similar proposal... for xxx a year they could buy into a program for annual disney/florida vacations with flexability. Then again me being 9, and happening almost 20y ago, I cant say if it was an actual sales pitch or a survey of favorability.
Yup! They opened up signups for the DVC in September of 1991 and by the end of that year the very first DVC resort, The Disney Vacation Club Resort (now Old Key West) opened for use.
Aggressive pushy people interrupting my vacation at every turn in order to get more of my money--yeah, Disney really changed the reputation of time shares.
Basically, Disney was the only company in the time share business who just came out and said "you're spending money on future vacations and nicer accommodations." They succeeded because they were the only honest people in an industry known for lying through its teeth.
The ad that played before this video was about timeshares.

Give 'em the old razzle-dazzle...
You honestly make some of the best Disney videos on UA-cam. Simple history and info on topics which many don’t cover, all in a easy to watch format. Love it!
Thanks!
Yeah, Rob is one the best Disney Channels out there, it's him and maybe three or four more.
I’m A DVC member...I bought through re-sale. Saved a ton of loot and for the price of nice car payment over 5 years I’m good on Disney trips through 2057.

OMG!!!! TIME TO DO A LITTLE DANCE

As a Disney Parks fan for years, I've never known what DVC truly was. Thanks, Rob!
I have some close friends who sell DVC and it’s adorable to almost everyone with great perks. I recommend at least checking it out and getting the tour.
Disney Dan do they work for Disney if so who are they since I work there
How adorable is it?
I'm a big fan
*affordable

Coincidentally timing, I've recently been thinking about if a modified DVC for college students/twenty somethings would be a good idea.
Jesse Myers I would buy into it so quickly if it wasn’t wildly unaffordable. So many of us students have an incredible amount of debt but I would personally buy in if I could
I've been a DVC member for 4 years now. If you go to a Disney park even semi-regularly, it's worth it.
I wish this UA-cam channel was your full time job, I could watch these videos daily!
Great video. You're right, when Disney gets ahold of an idea people hate, they make people love it. Timeshare pitches suck, but when you focus on the guest experience, it makes it just that much better.
Disney and Rob are professionals on what they do. Thank you, Rob. I always learn from you.
I would just like to point out when he talks about the Disney store there is a Come From Away poster. YAY!
I have taken time share sales pitch
1) I was offered ice cream, limo ride and 50 dollars
2) it lasted 3 plus hours
3) The salesman lied: he explained contract law wrong. After pointed out his mistake, he reuse to admit his mistake.
4) was ask to leave the meeting
5) NEVER asked to join THO
The ice cream rocked
I've been binging all of your videos lately. Best Disney youtuber by FAR. Keep up the good work man! You're great!
I always learn so much from your channel! Thanks Rob!
DVC Is AWESOME its a great deal all the way around
Dennis you know you can sell your points when you do not use them?
DENNIS STRÅGEFORS thanks for responding. It took me 5 years of not going and saving but was well worth the sacrifice 👍
Great Video Rob! I don't know if it was from the Get go or added later, but they did offer DVC members park admission for the first 10 years or until 1999 or something like that. Given the way admission costs go up, it would have been a pretty sweet perk!

I live in Vero Beach! They offer character breakfast that’s open to the public. Still expensive, but a great birthday treat 💖
Great insight to the creation of the DVC. I'll probably end up getting a DVC timeshare down the road. Lovely video Rob!

Like the people pushing how great it is to own and hold gold--people who are selling their gold.
Nice. I've never heard of The Disney Vacation Club.. have to look into it.
I am *dying* that you used the Always Sunny clip... :D :D
Very interesting history as always Rob, keep up the great work! :)
Fascinating video, Rob! Really enjoyed it.
Hey Rob, will you be creating more videos on the minecraft disney server? Thank you
In all honestly I prefer making these types of videos rather than the Minecraft stuff. So while I generally subscribe to the "never say never" notion, I don't currently have any plans to return to the game.
My folks went to Vegas and got lured into a timeshare presentation but rather than just take the free meal voucher they actually bought one. 4 years later and they haven't used it once.
I find it funny that I was treated to an ad related to timeshares before this video.
Wow!!! Great video! I think you should compare DVC to an Annual Pass.
I've been DVC since 2002 thru resale. Don't regret it at all!
Really great! So much info! DVC is what Disney is all about now!
Rob love your knowledge of Disney it's vary amazing and does help out so thank you my friend
Thanks Rob. Another fun and fact filled video.
first holiday to florida was westgate villas kissimee on timeshare.it was a new world back in 90's
I just want to say that the example you showed at 2:00 can’t be more than 10 years old, Sands Bethlehem wasn’t even being built until around the time the first Transformers was filming (they used the old site for scenes from this movie)
Interesting video, Rob. I like your disney videos alot and this one might be one of my favourite videos you've made.
I love the UA-cam timeshare ad before the video.
Loved this one especially since I’m a DVC member! Would you consider doing one on the origination of Doritos? Apparently they started in Disneyland...thanks as always!
Good vid Rob! Can’t wait for more!
Disney uses good timeshares. They make guests happy.
An awesome video, love to learn about golden oak.
So while it's been a success, they haven't had much success outside of WDW, and that runway is getting pretty short.
Ultimately, membership expires for everyone and they get to do it all over again.
I learned some interesting things today thank you Rob
Another incredible video sir. Thank you!
My family’s been more than 20 times and we still aren’t DVC cause I don’t think you can get the free dining plan for going during off seasons
DVC Member and loving it!
I just got a timeshare ad lol
Great video on the DVC thanks
I know it’s not the DVC... but how are other hotel chains (I.e. Hotel chains/timeshares ay Bonnet Creek) allowed on Disney property? Is there a lease from Disney? Does Disney sell off land within its “gates”?
This is a really interesting video, how did Michael Eisner know that the company was going to be taking over and by whom?
Watching this video remains me of other of your video "What Does a YEAR at Disney World Cost?
" Would buying DVC be cheaper if I wanted to stay at Disney World for a year?
I’m not a fan of timeshares. I married into one my wife had been pressured into buying and cannot get rid of it. I personally like to go where I want, when I want, when I can afford it. I bought a timeshare at Orange Lake - which shares a border with Animal Kingdom. For years I wished Disney would buy the property ha ha
Very good history.
I’ve been a DVC Member since 99
Great video as usual
Dude I got a timeshare lawyer ad after this
We got sucked into a timeshare presentation on our Honeymoon. It was supposed to be a tour of a new mountain lodge and we would get a gift card for participating. My mom swears by the DVC, and is practically an unofficial spokesperson for them.
A much better 'deal' is to rack up credit card points and go to WDW for free or close to it.
I would say, the literal only annoying thing about having DVC is having to file property taxes on it.
Great job 😃
Where did the version of "great big beautiful tommorrow" in this video come from
DVC is the best thing anyone in my family has ever bought, not including financial things!

"A-woo-lani" lmao
in my opinion DVC is a great investment. my family bought into animal kingdom lodge 🦒 🦔 🦓
this reminds me of that one south park episode 😬🤣
On my first Disney world trip my grandpa almost got dvc
Why is there a mountain in the logo lol?
We own at Aulani... DVC does it right...
My wife and I got attacked by a cast member trying to sell us a DVC membership ☹️
1:11 Hale isn't pronounced "Hail," it's "Ha-lay." I'm impressed you managed to pronounce "Ka'anapali" good.
3:41 Wal-Mart modeling kig?!?!
I want to be a dvc member
I got a time share ad...
Disney just had a classier way of ripping people off.
yass
Ey! Someone make Walt's Epcot in Cities: Skylines and tell me if it works.
46 views? And I thought I was early 😭🤓
Dvc members since 1996
No gifts not anymore ....
Aggressive pushy people interrupting my vacation at every turn in order to get more of my money--yeah, Disney really changed the reputation of time shares.
Work for dvc ...
Jacob Schmidt, are you in sales?
sales operations coordinator

Disney cell phones were not a success. They were at least good about refunding my investment.
