David Harris, the CEO of the American Jewish Committee, comesfrom a Jewish family in Moscow, and during a brief visit to Lisbon, told us how, during the second world war, our country was an essential part of his family's story, who arrived here on the run from Nazi persecutions.
A story that begins in Moscow, where David Harris' maternal family originated and from where, in the 1920s, with Stalin leading the revolution, they fled to Paris.
With the war and France being invaded and occupied by the German army, David Harris' mother and grandparents had to flee again, in order to reach the United States of America. But for that it was necessary first to reach Portugal.
The family must have entered on Vilar Formoso border like thousands of other refugees fleeing the Nazis. Some by car, others by train.
In Lisbon, the family met the Israeli Community of Lisbon and the Jewish organization Hicem, which shared visa expenses.
And it was at the Israeli hospital, which belonged to Somej Nophilim, a solidarity institution of the Israeli community in Lisbon, that on the very day of departure on boat, they were vaccinated, before boarding, towards a new life in the United States.
Portugal remained the memory of a safety place in one of the most troubled moments of their lives.
David Harris, o CEO do American Jewish Comitte é originário de uma família judaica de Moscovo e durante uma breve passagem por Lisboa, contou como durante a segunda guerra mundial, o nosso país foi parte essencial da história da sua família, que aqui chegou fugida das perseguições nazis.
Uma história que começa em Moscovo, de onde a família materna de David Harris era originária e de onde, nos anos 20 do século passado, com Stalin a liderar a revolução, fugiu para Paris.
Com a guerra e a França a ser invadida e ocupada pelo exército alemão, a mãe e os avós de David Harris tiveram de novamente fugir, com o objetivo de chegar aos Estados Unidos da América. Mas para isso era preciso chegar a Portugal.
A família deve ter entrado por Vilar Formoso como milhares de outros refugiados que fugiam dos nazis. Uns de automóvel, outros de comboio.
Em Lisboa a família conheceu a Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa e a organização judaica Hicem, que comparticipava as despesas dos vistos.
E foi no hospital israelita, que pertencia ao Somej Nophilim , instituição solidária da comunidade israelita de Lisboa, que no próprio dia da partida tomaram as vacinas, antes de embarcar, rumo a uma nova vida nos Estados Unidos.
De Portugal ficou a lembrança de um porto seguro num dos momentos mais atribulados das suas vidas.
