ive always wanted a video on 1600 iso. now when i inevitably fall and hit my head, because my RB67 pulls me to the ground under its sheer weight, i can always re-watch this video to relive the joy again and again.
Yeah, I owned an RB67 for a short time... that weight is why I got rid of it. Even with the hand grip it was not really hand hold-able. Nearly unusable when off of a tripod. And I'm not a small guy.
I had a feeling this location looked familiar. If I'm not mistaken this place is used by Milsim West for some of their events. Some of the buildings and walls looked familiar and security guy was pretty much the key for me. Milsim West is a pretty hardcore airsoft event, as part of the rules I think you are allowed to use blanks (fired out of real guns) in addition to airsoft guns and once the match begins there are no breaks in the action until the event ends usually 2-3 days.
The photos of Caleb remind me a lot of the work of painter Casper David Friedrich. The one at 18:09 to me reminds of the way he would paint large landcapes with one person in it that you can hardly see almost hidden in the frame. I reccommend checking out that work. Very cool video.
Jason, this might get buried in the comments, but check out Stephen Wilkes' large format work from Ellis Island if you haven't seen it. Great abandoned building documentation. If I recall correctly, he spent an entire year going back there at all seasons, and just used natural light. Really nice work, very painterly. In person the prints are enormous and super compelling. The coffee table book is a real gem.
Every video you put out feels like a very high budgeted funded movie! i love all your videos thank you so much for putting all your hard effort and passion into your vidoes, you are a huge inspiration thank you

At 6:23 those two graffiti spots seen on the wall are by the photographer John Divola. His work is real good and is interesting seeing it in your video :)
About 1994 is when the US government decided to condense and close many military facilities. I did my Basis Training at Fort Ord in 1974 and it was one of the many that were closed so I assume that this military base was one that was in the mix with all the others.
The so-called trick to loading a petal spool leica quickly is to place the film leader just like shown on the diagram on the bottom of the camera and only begin winding the film once the bottom plate as been attached. The steering wheel thing on the bottom plate will push the film leader into the spring in the middle of the petals and not let it slip. As opposed to winding it when the bottom plate is off, that will cause the film to slip nearly every time. If you don't believe, consult an instruction manual for any modern film leica. You have to trust the camera.
Am I supposed to ignore those beautiful 16mm camera rigs you both are using ? 😍 incredible shots on 16mm and I loved that you mixed in motion picture footage with this video! Great work

I think portra 800 is definitely a very warm film. Fuji 800 was always good for a more muted color palette. Though I’ve been meaning to work through some lomo 800 to see if it fills that fuji void.
What camera are you filming the video on?? Cause you may think you’re just a photographer, but that dreamt cinematic look of the hole video is not gonna be forgotten
You should try to shoot a reenactment event someday, it's wicked fun and only costs permanent hearing loss. I did a WWII one using a Kodak 35 several years ago, and it was wicked fun. I'd love to do it again with my Graflex and really hate myself.
there was an abandoned community center near where i live that my friends and i used to hangout in a few years ago. over the summer i went there to photograph it on film only to find that it’s all gone except for the foundation.
Hey Jason, the technique of shooting the space and not necessarily a subject is something that I have also thought about and used. but I've used it when photographing regular boring houses and interiors like that, specifically ones that are staged in a "lifestyle" kind of feel. No people in the shots I'm taking either. But I really appreciate you mentioning that. I might have to start posting to UA-cam again 🥺 you inspire me.
Using an ultra wide lens requires a different technique. I started out primarily as a landscape photographer, you have to become someone that is observant of the rules like Wally Pfister, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and my photography god Akira Kurasowa. Become aware of framing including the use of layers, rules of thirds, leading lines, Fibonacci theory, and just the simple fact per AK, sometimes more is actually more, and less is drab, boring, and displeasing. I approach a wide angle lens like a 17 as if I'm telling the story of an establishing scene in a movie, and with street photography, I've realised this is the key, but it's not the easiest craft in the world, because you have to see using your full vision, and frame everything in the scene to tell the narrative. AK would be proud of the opening scene of The Dark Knight, it tells the story that every man when pushed far enough can be The Joker, and that The Joker is just a mask. Notice the busyness and the layers of people walking through the street which is a classic AK technique also for the use of expansive scenes. ua-cam.com/video/xLcHPsWK5xg/v-deo.html It's plagarised as fuck but you get the point.... Unfortunately AK was so much of a grand master that most of his work will be repeated by other masters. It sets the point though, every man is a Joker when they've been pushed too far. It established the premise of every comic book movie after its release. It wasn't just a good super hero movie, it told the story of how super heroes and villains are amongst us all. I dunno, it's the Yin and the Yang of life maybe... We can't use a follow focus obviously, but what we can explore is the elements that make a good scene, and how each shot and therefore each frame is a scene in itself.
This video is so nice to watch. I love your shot composition and your style of shooting, and it shows in your video content! I also love 4:3 video on youtube, honestly a pretty bold move that I like. Keep doing what you’re doing man, I hope you’re happy with your work.
it's so weird how "portfolio" photos you like are kinda B tier to me and the ones you flash up for a moment and don't comment on much end up being my favorites.
Yeah I feel the same. I guess it’s all subjective. I also think color looks great with these dilapidated spaces. Black and White makes the images more focused on the windows, IMO.
Ive always wanted to shoot abandoned buildings but this exact stuff happening is why Im pretty hesitant about it. Who knows what kinda people might roll up
Looks like a neighborhood from a Fallout game. Love me some urban decay! Looks like you got several great shots! I desperately want to know what the "it" was that the security guard mentioned. There is a story there.
Check out Milsim west for the event at that location. We use blank fire guns so everyone was safe at the moment. But its funny, because there's a large amount of people we know who feel at rest and relaxed at that place when gunshots ring off in the distance.
Great video as always!! (just be careful in abandoned buildings.... if you have an accident your health insurance is totally invalidated. A good friend is a VP in a US healthcare provider)
congrats on 187k! In Germany we have a popular band that calls itself '187 Straßenbande' which loosely translates into '187 - lovely guys' and I think you should celebrate and listen to one of their songs called '500 PS' (it's released by Bonez MC dont worry nobody gets it)

Friedrich is a great painter. love his landscapes. always feel like he paints glorified memories like we all have
Shooting exactly the same composition in each unit, with the differing decay itself as the subject, would make an interesting typological series.

The variety of the composition is subtle but is apparent in the holes punched in the drywall. That's where the magic lies.
