The lyrics to Danny Boy were written by the English lyricist, Frederic Weatherly in 1913, and based on the original song 'A Londonderry Air.'. 'Danny Boy' was a pop song during World War I, sung by the soldiers in the trenches, and throughout Britain, Ireland and America during that time. I mentioned WW1 so I should mention WW2! In WW2 the song 'Lili Marlene' was a popular German song, sung by both British and German sides to sustain their morale. What a sad state of affairs.....both singing the same song and then shooting at each other!!!!.
