Those 1960s Columbia "six eye" LPs are highly praised for their pressing quality.

hello, record-ology, hope you had a nice thanksgiving holiday. my mother had both these lps when i was kid, i really got to like them and still do till this day. i even have a mitch miller re issue compact disc, but those 6 eye columbia lps sound the best by far. i have a various assortment of ray conniff lps to and one of my favorites i remember when growing up was his classic ''christmas with canniff'', when i heard that i knew the holidays were here! he was from massachusetts where i also live , but down southern part not far from rhode island. thanks for sharing these beautiful records, stay well

While visiting my local Value Village today, I bought two Mitch Miller albums with gatefold covers and the lyrics sheets included inside and both are Columbia six-eye pressings which are noted for their sound quality. One title is "TV Sing Along with Mitch Miller and the Gang' which is a nice black glossy cover and the other title is 'Saturday Night: Sing Along with Mitch' with a bright red glossy cover and yellow and black letters.
Shockingly, there were no Ray Conniff Singers albums to be seen today. :)

I own over ten of the Ray Conniff records from the 50s and 60s that used to belong to my Grandfather. I also have many of his London Record Phase 4 collections that I still listen to to this day. I feel sorry for all the people who did not have the great opportunity to listen to this wonderful music and many, many wonderful performers.

Great stuff! I grew up listening to both Mitch Miller and Ray Conniff since they were my dad's favorite music. Definitely don't pass these up when you find them. and get their Christmas records too!!

2:25 While enjoying the thrill of the hunt at thrift stores, I've definitely seen records by Mitch Miller & The Gang ('Sing' Along With Mitch' albums) as well as albums by the Ray Conniff Singers.
I have that Mitch Miller & The Gang Christmas record as seen on that back cover (which I think sold at least 500,000 copies back in its day) as well as another album 'Mitch's Marches' featuring 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' (a great version) and other songs.
I have a couple of Ray Conniff records too (' 'S Wonderful!' is one that comes to mind) which I mainly bought for the covers that captured the elegance of the 1950's era. :)

My old man loved Ray Coniff.
And Pete Fountain. And rightfully so.

All of the Columbia 6-eyes and up to the Columbia 2-eyes with "360 Sound" in black font color used tube amps from recording right up to the cutter head. I think this is why they sound so good. For the Columbia 2-eyes with "360 Sound" in white font color and after was when solid state amps were used in at least one stage of recording, and that's when the sound quality shifted.

PS-it was Mitch Miller, as Columbia’s A & R man, signed Tony Bennett to Columbia-and the rest is history.

Hearing those names brings me back to when I was first starting to collect. They sold records like this at my local library for .25 a peace. I think the best two records I ever got were the soundtrack to Rocky, and the soundtrack to the failed sequel to Saterday Night Fever, Stayin’ Alive, which only featured a cut short version of that song at the end and pissed me off as a kid. Funny thing, I was 12 when I was doing this, I’m 22 now, meaning I started JUST before it was cool.

Nice to hear some good words on these generally despised albums. Most of the record hunters on UA-cam just flip past them in their search videos.

Add-on almost a year later; I recently found Young At Heart on CD and their previous album Talk of the Town also on CD, glad to have them that way. My family had Memories by Mitch but I gave it to a friend who collected Mitch back in the '70s. I still see it constantly in used record bins, sometimes free. Mitch usually only had male singers while Ray had men and women contrasting each other. Stereo is mor important in a Conniff album than a Miller album. Many of the Columbia artists' records of late '50s to mid '60s have the same studio sound with the strong reverb between tracks. Ray Conniff was an arranger for Artie Shaw's band before joining Columbia Records as an arranger/conductor for their singers.

Like the album covers, but don't recall seeing these two albums in the UK. The odd Ray Conniff album does come up though.

I know the name Ray Conniff, but not Mitch Miller. I would leave them both in the store. They remind me of a UK Radio 2 Programme called Sing Something Simple from the 70s. It was on 7.00 p.m. every Sunday after the Top 20 Charts Records on Radio 1. It was so depressing as it indicated that Sunday was coming to an end and Monday was looming to go back to School. I loved School, but had the dreaded French Class first thing Monday. I can still sing the theme song chorus too.
Update. I have just looked for Sing Something Simple on UA-cam. I found it from 1968. Laughing as all the people's comments mention about going back to school.

The main reason there was so many Mitch Miller records was his TV show, which was extremely popular at the time. Long before VCRs or DVRs, taking home a record was the way you enjoyed repeated playings of your favorite songs from TV shows. Therefore, records were the only way to “follow the bouncing ball” at home between weekly shows. It was similar for Ray Conniff as well.
These records show a different time, when families (when they could tear the teenager away from Elvis) could sit together, listen and sing along. They inevitably lost favor as the times changed, and even Mom an Dad could listen to Beatles records, after they saw them on Ed Sullivan. This is not to say that the Beatles alone killed off these records; but they certainly were a catalyst.
Keep playing these thrift store records!!! Not only are they interesting, but it encourages those on a budget that they can find interesting records for a few bucks (and keeps them in the vinyl hobby as well).

Miller also has the distinction of dumping Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan from Columbia before they both took off at Capitol and Mercury, respectfully.

I feel like I'm going to be the black sheep here because I absolutely HATE the sound of the Mitch Miller singers! :) My wife loves them because she used to listen to his multitude of Christmas songs with her grandparents and so there are lots of great memories there. To me, they just sound like the Borg singing. :) My dad has a bunch of Ray Conniff albums and so I remember them from when I was young. I think the Ray Conniff sound is a bit more melodious than the Mitch Miller sound, personally. Take care and thanks for sharing part of your collection!!

Mitch Miller and his chorus did an outstanding main title song for 'The Guns of Navarone' soundtrack. Here's a link for that song for that epic fictional World War II movie which I have often used to test a stereo or speaker setup: ua-cam.com/video/dAWBoBzho10/v-deo.html

Or, for an overseas alternative, the BBC George Mitchell Minstrel shows from the 1960s. Brits impersonating white Americans who impersonate Black Americans... probably illegal to own in the US these days.
