Yelling 'halt' instead of stop could've made all the difference with someone whose primary language may not have been English. The quality of writing is so understated.
I also love the "14, not 9 like people say just... just 14". He wants to correct the rumour and defend himself but he catches himself halfway through and confirms how tragic and wrong it was, whether the kid was 9 or 14, because he feels so guilty and doesn't think he deserves sympathy.
