When I was fourteen years old, I didn't own headhpones. I lied on the floor with the two speakers of my boom box pointed at my ears, turned down to Volume 2, and I listened to this song dozens of times - every night - to calm me down and let me sleep.
This is just a brief glimpse at what made each member of REM so good and thus REM collectively as well. The willingness to be artists by exploring and changing and evolving while still staying true to what made them REM in the first place. Although I never bought into the later records, I very much appreciate the folk influence and acoustic style that the mandolin brought out. I wish Buck, and REM collectively, incorporated more banjo and acoustic piano along the way not as fixtures but more regularly perhaps.
You might be leaving out an unspoken 5th member. The place they lived. This documentary capturing a small town just like the one I grew up in, hot, wooden Victorians, college town. Not much going on. I feel like they capture the south better than any country band ever has. Nobody ever talks about that. To me, there folksy era sounds like rural decay.
Will the recording in that tape ever be released in full? Losing My Religion is my favorite song of all time and that mandolin is my favorite piece of music. Can’t get enough of it and wish there were more songs like it, but there aren’t.
I was given a mandolin today for my 53rd Birthday, first thing I tried to work out? Obviously "Losing My Religion". It's going OK, but as a bass player that tiny little fretboard is a bit of a challenge!
Peter Buck was tired of being a guitar hero so started experimenting with acoustic instruments and happened upon the mandolin. I have a tape in my basement of him playing the song exactly as it is on the album. ( pretty much ).

Fuck!!! I was expecting a girl slicing her fingertips off whilst finely chopping a cucumber making some sweet sweet music??? Guess I got that wrong then?

@@guillermo7168it's not, Peter said that he found out about the bit from Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence a year after he wrote it

My fave singer
I believe that house is where the performance of this song was recorded on 10/20/90. You can find the video on remhq actually.
I was literally listening to this song today
is it possible to add subtitles? For the deaf and hard of hearing fans, like me :-)

Automatic was the last great album. After that, it surely went downhill; especially after Unibrow jumped ship.
His name was Bill Berry.
@@marvinthemaniac7698 No shit?!
@@felsner1 why did you call him Unibrow if you know his name?
@@marvinthemaniac7698 Go figure!
