I was with you up until you said I have to midi map them. I have no clue what you did or how to make loop 2 and 3 auto start
What he said.

You'll have to map the record buttons or however she selected the track to a midi controller
MIDI map -
- Hit midi button on top right corner
- Mouse-click a button you want to control with a MIDI Controller (in her example, they’re little triangles that appear in the middle of each column while midi mapping is active. You can see them when she says “map this button here”
- Tap the button or turn the knob on your midi controller. Small text should appear on the computer screen next to the button you’re mapping
(Repeat the previous two steps for each Ableton button you want to map. Click Ableton button, tap midi controller or turn knob, look for text to appear)
- click MIDI (top right corner) to exit MIDI mapping mode.
@@JonValtandtheEvilRobotsThanks man. It makes sense now.. I need a midi controller
@@squirrel7t7 yep! And it hardly matters which brand, etc.
Just FYI, the square pads on MIDI controllers aren’t truly extra buttons. They’re internally mapped to notes. Meaning you can trigger things using notes on the keyboard.
HUGE HELP Thank you!! I had been using vst's for my guitar tone and just duplicating the tracks. Wound up being very cpu intense. Never thought of just routing the audio from a master guitar channel. THANK YOU!!!
Awesome! Glad it helps 👍
Probably the clearest, most beginner friendly Ableton video on UA-cam. Thank you for this!
This has been a lifesaver for me! Thanks for creating such a great starter guide!
I've been looking for a sensible looping workflow since Ableton 8. I use Ableton Live as a conventional DAW, around 80% of what I record are live instruments. Guitar, bass, drums, vocal. This is the best workflow I have seen so far! Thanks so much for posting this video, it has changed my templates for the better!
My only request from Ableton has been for preset loop length. I record with a standard drum kit, and it's very difficult for me to click a MIDI mapped pedal separate from the kit, it's distracting. I wish there was a way to pre-select the loop length, but I haven't found a good way.
Awesome! Glad it helped 😁
I totally agree about preset loop length. The only way I know of is with the Push 2 controller “fixed length”, but my issue with that is, I don’t always do the same length loops for different instruments in the same song. Some are 2 bars, some are 4, etc
Theres a fix for this. Its a third party plugin called BinkLooper which you can add to any track and set a desired lenght. ✌️
Extremely helpful to see how you do this! Thank you
Thanks for this, I love seeing how others set up their sets for live looping. It's amazing how flexible Ableton is, because everyone does things so differently!
Totally! I love Ableton. There’s a way that works for everyone!
This was easily the best video on how to do this. Great workflow
what is the difference and pros of recording the loop on a separate track and not just on the actual original guitar track that you have?
great vid. Question: when in 4.24 you say "I am going to midi map them" what is the icon you map when you press on each track (3 times)? I dont see that in my screen. I have ableton 11.
Right? I've been watching this video looking at my Ableton like what?
@@jasonperrott first you have to click the "MIDI" button in the far top right of the screen.
You are a good teacher. Clear and concise. Thank you.
Thank you!
Another great video!! Glad your twitch channel randomly popped up on my recommendations. Your the only non gaming streamer I would follow. Keep it up!!
Yayyy pockets! Thanks for the support 🥰
This is dope! One day I’ll venture off this far into incorporating my MacBook into my live performances
Thank you. However it would have been good to have shown the midi mapping and how to do that. I have novation mk3 how can i map in? Do I need to be very fast to hit the record stop button after i play the chord strums?😊
Launchkey mk3 should be plug and play, so it should automatically map to Ableton. For the record stop question, check your quantization settings. It should default to 1 bar but if not, try that. That's what I have mine set to.
I agree with Lee Townsend, Probably the clearest, most beginner friendly Ableton video on UA-cam. Thank you for this!
Teaching methodology is to the point and crystal clear. Please let me know the name of the foot pedal you are using with Ableton Live.
I got lost at 4:30, how do I start recording? MIDI map also confused me.
what did you midi map the recording on/off to?
ThePrimeagen raided you not too long ago on twitch, and for that reason I am subscribing here. I ❤ looping with Ableton, it’s the best and has been for a long time!
Direct and to the point, thank you for this
Ok this is the smartest way I’ve seen this done -
So at 4:20 ish
1. The ‘Guitar’ channel is set to IN but isn’t armed - it’s essentially just a monitoring track
2. the Guitar Loop channels are then armed one at a time, set to Ext In and input is OFF, ‘Guitar’ this means that monitoring signal isn’t doubled.
3. Global quantize (at top of screen) is set to 1 BAR which means loops will cut cleanly at the bar line
One question, do the audio clips loop back round automatically? Or is there a PREF or global setting that needs to be selected to make that happen? Thanks!
SO helpful! Thanks for being so cool and so kind! Would love another video on how you personally do the MIDI & loop shortcut key mapping! Oh, and how you incorporate quantizing, and whatever else is used to get the start/stop of the loops to flow well into each other.
Noted! I would like to make this a mini series, so I’ll keep that in mind!
@@Justine-Griffin I am totally wanting the same. I am simply using my keyboard from the computer. Would love some more tips! Thank you! This gives me hope
@@Justine-Griffin please make this video :)
@@Justine-Griffinhas this been released yet?
Yes! This would be so awsome!🎉
not sure if I missed something but how do you get each track to be record armed when you select it?
Here, I have another video on how to set that up! (How to automatically record arm tracks in Ableton Live)

Wish I could like this video twice! Been back a few times thanks again!
Wrote a longer message but it got deleted and I’m tiiiired but really appreciate this!
Awesome!!
Hey Justine
Thanks a lot for this easy tutorial. There is just one thing I totally don't get. 4:32 you click on Midi and then "Midi-map?" the loop channels? But I do not have that button you're talking about. There is just a triangle sign on all of these channels. Is it because you already have some data (106/107/108 and so on) on the master channel?
How do I get these 96, 97, 98 stuff on that channels, that they record one after another?
did you figure this out?
@@ZombieLonghorn nope
Thank you so much! It was so clear and straight to the point!
Could you share how you are starting and stopping the loop? You mentioned midi mapping but didn't come back to it. Thank you
Thanks! Very clear tutorial.
Great video.
Super helpful video! Thanks for making this!
Amazing video. Thank you. I look forward to listening to you in action. With any luck to inspire me for my own loop tracks.
Cool! Hope it does :)
my clip only starts on time in the first loop, its off time in 2nd, 3rd and 4rth loop. it again starts on time in 5th loop and off time cycle repeats, what might be the problem?
Is it somehow possible to record in session view and record the clips there, while simultaneously the session in arrangement view?
so how did you move left and right to select the track your recording on 4:49 in the video? also did you midi map the stop button on each track ?
Most important part I dont understand. You map button to midi and then? What is this button? How You trigger it? With foot? How does ableton knows where is end of the loop?
Is it free looping or do you have a set tempo with a clicker to start? Also are you mapping the triggers to a midi pedal?
Nice. What about connecting mics in Ableton 12 with macOS Big Sur. Running into an issue there.
does this work when you have direct monitoring enabled? Doesnt seem to pick up in the corresponding loop tracks
How did you set the length of the loop? Can I use this method to do an entire song? Say, lay down the guitar, then bass, then banjo, then mandolin... then jam with vocals and violin, or something like that... ?
The only “fixed length” loop I know of is by using the Push. It has a button for it, but if I remember right, it only work for midi loops like drums. I hardly ever use that feature.
Yes this is the method I use for looping full songs
how did u set the loops to record a specific length automatically? and what is the trigger to the next loop? i used the same midi map settings and it does not go to the next loop track and leave the previous track playing
what did you use to switch the midi tracks, a midi foot controller or???
Thanks great tutorial very clear and thorough plus easy to follow.
thanks a lot! i've always wondered how it works behind the scenes ;)
Are you using a preset loop length? I didn’t assume you pressed something to stop the loop recording. I am trying to figure out how to have a preset loop recording length where it stops on its own. Great video by the way, I am looking for a foot pedal and I think you just showed me the one I’ll get.
I don't get it on how to time the loop. is there a way to recording to start when I start playing cos I need to like quit the playing to stop recording, and start recording. Any way around it?
thanks for the video, when you launch a track the record arm follows, when I launch track, my record arm does not. when I record arm all the tracks I want to loop then launch track it works like your great video, what am i doing wrong you are a beautiful teacher! maybe in preferences I have to select something?
Thank you!
Very cool!
Can you please answer me this question you said that there’s a button which is called in when you select an audio or midi track to be able to automatically arm a track when selecting it, but that doesn’t work there’s probably another way that I don’t know to arm the track without physically having to arm the truck but only when I select the whole track
Look at my tutorials playlist on my channel, I have a video on how to set that up 😊
Abelton live lite has looper function?
Thanks a lot for this video!
Very nice 🤗
Thanks
Such a wonderful and informative tutorial!
So.. if its not a real instrument and vst or sound bank process is the same right just put it in input of track and use it in loop track maybe I'm get it wrong...
You would use a midi track for anything that isn’t a psychical instrument that is being recorded, but yeah same process (mostly)
Smart set-up using the extra channels for recording clips. 🎸 Thank you very much for sharing! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you!
Thank you from Brazil!!
My problem with this set up was, as far as I know I can’t delete certain loops/clips I just made via midi. When it comes to midi mapping, you can’t midi map the delete key, can you? And how would I select the proper clip to delete via midi?
Ah, that’s a good point. I just use the delete key on my Push controller or my computer keyboard. Not the best. Maybe someone will leave a better suggestion!
Thank you! How can i set up the program so that the recording of the audio track ends after exactly 4 (8 bar) bars and then only looping? I don't want push the stop button on audiotracks
As far as I know, that’s only a feature for midi tracks. I don’t think it’s possible for audio unfortunately
@@Justine-Griffin Thank you! I beginner in ableton. I work only in Cubase. When i watch vido on youtube ' Made in Ableton Live: Rachel K Collier on live looping, organizing Live Sets and more ' on 7:40 timecode - i see that she start the record, but don't push anything to stop . Or I'm just misunderstanding something.
I don't have the button at 4:32 - I just have the stop clip button then it goes straight to the "audio from section", no play button. Do I have to do something with preferences to make it appear?
Ok, sorry, I just worked it out. To anyone else having this issue, this button only appears when you enter midi mapping or key mapping.
What do you set the sample rate and buffer size to to keep latency low but not sacrificing CPU?
Hmm I do 96 for the buffer size and 44.1khz for the sample rate. It depends on your computer though, it’s kind of a trial and error thing to find the best setting for your setup
Ah I learned so much tonight please do more, and as far as the midi channels go its just adding the midi track and leave it on Auto am I correct. Thanks J loved it 💜
Yeah, I just leave those on auto because you want to select the midi instrument and loop directly to that track, rather than feed it from an audio track. Hope that makes sense!
@@Justine-Griffin absolutely. I am so excited it’s hard to move from a foot looper to Ableton but am loving it especially the way I can now set it up thanks to you 🤗
Hey. How do you overcome latency when recording with your audio track in and plugins on it ?
Put your effects like reverb, delay (or other effects/plugins that you use across multiple tracks) onto return tracks. That limits the amount of places that the plugins are at. Hope that makes sense!
cool! what d you use to start recording / playing each clip? is it a foot trigger? I was wondering if one can program a mapping sequence doing different stuff but using just one pedal (like a drum pad or a sustain pedal) cause I don't have multiple triggers. is that possible with Ableton? once you hit the pedal you are set to map the next track, or whatever.
Yep you can map multiple things to the same button, assuming you want to trigger them all at the same time. I use a midi foot controller to launch some of the tracks!
I'm confused about how the track knkows how long the loop should be? Any advice?
If I'm understanding you correctly, you are the one that determines how long the loop will be. You can record however long you like, just make sure you stop it in time so that it plays back a seamless loop!
🎉thanks
did you connect the guitar to an audio interface or did u play it straight through the mic?
I plug it into the interface. Honestly you could do either. I just find that my mic picks up a lot of noise around the room so it’s probably cleaner to just plug my guitar in and have it separate, but I’ve never tried the mic
Thanks, Justine! I seem to have made some bad decisions on my looping setup. First is the Boss RC-600 loop station, which is unreliable and seems to get worse with each firmware update. Then I made the mistake of using (brain dead) Mainstage, which is built to sell new computers with more cores and memory. I''m at a crossroads, now. Do I hang to the RC-600 or dump it while they still have some value and move to Ableton? It seems most of the best Twitch streamers, like you, use Ableton with lots of control surfaces. Big decision.
Cheers,
RustyBoltMusic
Sell 👏 it 👏
I think Ableton is more worth your time of practicing. You kinda have to pick one and stick with it (type of looper I mean) because each one takes a considerable amount of effort to get good at haha
Although I think it depends on your goals as a musician. Do you want to gig with just a mic and guitar? Probably stick with the simple looper pedal option. If you want to use synths and stuff then Ableton is better but has more pieces to set up and more moving parts, which = more problems haha
@@Justine-Griffin, I'm all too familiar with looper problems. Ableton looks even less friendly than Mainstage, so I'm going to stick to my RC-600, for now (even though it has randomly crashed since I bought it - a sad tale). I love your talent. I'm headed for Twitch, too. Someday.
Could somebody explain midi mapping to me? For some reason my loops are not activating when i press record.
I need to make chapters for this video to make it easier to find!! Check 4:31 for the button I map for each track. There are different ways you can loop tracks but that’s a good button to map for a foot controller, like I’m doing in the video.
Also, if something is acting weird and you can’t figure it out, don’t forget to just reboot ableton! Sometimes it glitches out.
Dear Ableton, please add Audio-Overdub for Clips, Thank you. (why on earth isn't it a feature yet? gods ways are truly mysterious) Thank you for the video! I have a question: Do you know a quick way (which can be achieved while live-playing, without much mouse-clicking) to adjust e.g. Guitar recordings to fit perfectly on the count 1? I mean, you might never have this issue if you have zero latency and play perfectly. But in my recordings i often times see that the first transient of the recorded audio signal doesnt perfectly match the beginning of the bar. Is there some sort of audio-quantisation possible to automatically drag the first transient to the absolute zero-starting-point of the loop ?
you can with the audio effect "looper"
I second this with clip overdubbing! Ugh. To answer your question, that does happen to me sometimes! You can do it on the Push 2, but I usually just quickly use my mouse to manually correct it. It's inefficient and looks kinda bad so I usually just hit "undo" with the push or Ctrl Z and re-record it. I don't know of an automatic way to do it unfortunately.
So I can not do this if I dont have a midi controller right? I mean I tried using the MIDI map controller and I dont think I can only with a laptop.
You can map keys on your computer keyboard
@@Justine-Griffin Hello, thank you for replying. What I did, ( I have ableton live 11) is that I recored the clips individually. I dont know if settings changed with ableton but basically I don't think I can do it as you do in the video. I notice that in the video you record the guitars right after another. Whereas I have to change the record button of each individual track, click on the record button of the clip set and then record it and I need to press space bar to stop recording and I have to time it of course. Do you have a video where you teach how to map keys on my keyboard? Anyway, I still learned from you how to create the loops which was awesome and I made a really cool one with I riff I had for months now and I did not know how to fit it. I will make a video and post it soon I think. Too bad though, that I can only have 8 tracks on ableton live 11 lite. I need to upgrade soon because now I have all these ideas and I need more tracks.
I have no foot control, my foot needs to be controlled, I'm about to find out if I can use a Line 6 pod XT with midi in and out, just need a USB. I should be able to map that. I'll let you know.
It works, that ol pedal is still useful. thats 11 switches and the expression pedal works too, can be assigned for whatever.
oh wow, nice. I think you can map anything that has midi controls. I even map my Stream Deck to functions in Ableton!
you're so awesome.. haven't seen you in twitch in a while
:) I stream Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays! Come by sometime!
Thank you!!!
Probably the EASIEST WAY to create a loop is by using Audio effects/ 1-2-4 etc Bar phrase. Hit the + button and midi MAP the f. feedback. That the easiest way.
Great.
It was really helpful
Hello, I am not sure to understand what is exactly the added value of creating "guitar loop" tracks rather than just copy pasting the "guitar'" tracks you have and just map you foot pedal in these?
There must be a reason I guess? :)
Thanks in advance !
The guitar loop tracks don’t have any effects on them because they are taking the audio from the main guitar track with effects. Keeps the cpu usage down vs having effects repeated on every track!
Interesting....
I suppose you can trigger the loops with a MIDI foot controller, right?
Yep, I use a Nektar Pacer
@@Justine-Griffin Sweet thanks! I see how that compares to my Morningstar units. I need to get on this ASAP.
I like that
Just what the doctor ordered!

What makes them loop?
Hey, wonderful tutorial :) was wondering how would you loop with the PC keyboard. Is there a way to do it?
Yes! You can midi map the keys on a keyboard instead of midi controllers. Type control+k or cmd+k to set up keyboard mapping.
thank you!
Thanks for this, v. helpful. Anyone know how to eliminate latency when using Ableton Live for live looping?
Go into Preferences and adjust the buffer size. If your computer can handle it, lower the buffer size for lower latency. If you start hearing crackling/popping, raise the buffer size! I shoot for about 15ms of latency
How do you overdub on loops you've already made?
with Ableton Intro and above it comes with a looper plugin that you can add to your live instrument tracks, for midi tracks, you can just hit the record button again after your first loop is there.
Hey, how do you set the tempo? I always have problems with the first loop. If I don't have a klick in my ears it's not satisfying. If I choose the looper of Ableton I can set the tempo by the first loop. But it's complicated to work afterwards. How do you solve this?
The tempo is in the upper left of the screen. You can set it manually or tap tempo. Then just make sure the metronome is turned on (it turns orange) and hit play for it to start the click
This is the best video explaining the process I have seen so far. I would be interested to know how you tackle songs with multiple parts looped (verse/chorus for example). The midi mapping you set up wouldn't switch from one clip to another and back. Also, arming the track, you did that hands free but I don't see it mapped in your screen shots. Or do you simply not do that type of loops?
Nice! That's a good idea for another tutorial. Multiple looped parts would be done differently.
Check out this tutorial for how to auto arm tracks: ua-cam.com/video/sZ8pe7I3C-M/v-deo.html
Very Helpful quick setup Guide big Thank you // When I map the record buttons like you showed it doesn't switch the arm button so it doesn't record.
Why is that?
I will make a tutorial for this!
Hi! I noticed that in the final demo at the end of the video you have your audio for the three loop tracks coming in from external input 2, rather than the “guitar” track like you’d instructed earlier in the video. Was this intentional? If so, why? Also, what are you using to trigger the loops, a foot controller?
I see what you're talking about. Good catch! I didn't realize in the video but it does say Ext. In 2, so that means the audio was coming directly from the input on my audio interface rather than the guitar track as I instructed earlier. Either way would work, and I'm not sure why it switched to Ext. In 2 to be honest but the difference is that if it's coming from the "guitar" track, it will retain the audio effects on the that track (EQ, Comp, etc) without having to add those FX to each individual "looping" track. Using the "guitar" track as the "Audio From" should save CPU usage because you only add the FX to one track, rather than repeating on a bunch of loop tracks. Hope that helps!
Lovely tutorial, I have been meaning to loop for a long time, nicely explained demo, may I ask what model focusrite interface you are using? keep up the good work, thank you
Thanks! I use the Focusrite 18i8.
@@Justine-Griffin Thank you :)
Midi map to what ? since both hands are busy playing ???
I use a Nektar Pacer (midi foot controller)
Interesting 👍
Awesome! So are you MIDI mapping to a foot switch for looping or to a midi controller on your desk?
I use both for looping, but for this tutorial I just used the Nektar Pacer midi foot controller to loop the guitar!
This is a great tutorial and I have this working, thank you! Can you confirm that when you finish the first loop by hitting the first midi pedal, you then hit the second midi pedal to move to the second track and hit the second midi pedal again to start recording? I was just wondering if it was possible to be able to hit the pedal once so it moves to the next track and records straight away, rather than having to hit it twice.
Oh yes. Ok this is the main flaw I’ve noticed with session looping. You have to wait like one loop before you can start recording the next track… usually it’s not that big of a deal because it gives you time to figure out what you’re going to record next, but when you already know what you’re going to loop, it’s kind of a pain and slows down the loop buildup.
You could experiment with the Looper in Ableton for specific loops that you want to overdub quickly, but I found it hard to keep track of Looper and session clips together. It’s like you need to choose one or the other form of looping… if you figure it out, make a tutorial for me please! Haha
@@Justine-Griffin thanks for the quick response. I think it might be possible to separate them and link different loopers to different tracks. Just looking into it now 😅
@@elecphan its complicated but this performer created a way to live loop with no break through automation and a device ua-cam.com/video/4TpMLmO_JJc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=connorshafran
But how do you clear the loops ?
I just select them and delete with the mouse and keyboard. Not ideal but I don’t know of another way to do it. 🤷♀️
Hey, thank for this tut, i have a doubt that how did you recorord it one by one, were you using a pedal to start and stop?
I was using a foot pedal! I midi mapped it to start and stop the loops as shown in the video
