In this video, we take a look at the history of Belgravia, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in London. I go over the history of the area, how the Grosvenor family came in possession of it and how it was turned from swampland to one of London's most beautiful neighborhoods. I also talk further about the history of the Grosvenors and the Westbourne River.

This was so insightful, thank you for sharing! When I visited this area in London a few years ago, there was definitely a palpable difference in the air; glad I finally figured out why. :)

How ironic that a former swamp is now mostly inhabited by swamp creatures.

I use 2 websites for the old maps, I have linked them in the video description. The first one is the interactive one for London and the second link is to one where you can look up maps from all over the world.

Do you know why the door ways in Belgrave Square are so wide and high ?
Were they for very tall people ?

I believe it was to show off how much wealth and prestige the owners of the houses had

Look into the past that they hide from you ! A thinking man would say the doors were made for very large people (13 to 16 ft was common ! ) AKA The great flood took all the giants but a few were left ! They ate flesh ( us small humans ) Look at the fossils that they claim were giant animals from our past ! ( Godless beings ) Dont let them hide your past from you ! There hiding GOD from you ! WAKE UP !

Interesting subject but your colleagues abysmal camera skills ruined it. You left out a sizeable chunk of important points that define the area such as the buildings and why they were al developed with white stucco. There is a 4the large square that of cadogan Square which borders Belgravia to the West. The Kings Road was the main thoroughfare linking Chelsea and the West into the city of Westminster. The Kings Road is still the proper name for the A3217 running through Chelsea and Belgravia. It carries the street signs "Eaton Square" since it also runs through the square which runs parallel. This is a common theme in London where a street ir road name also takes the name of the squares through which it passes. This is to prevent sign post confusion but the street also retains its inherent street name but won't necessarily be signposted. Other examples are Grosvenor Street running through Grosvenor Square and Wigmore Street running through Cavendish Square. Belgravia became a popular residential area for peers of the House of Lords to establish their opulent London town houses with close proximity to the Houses of Parliament & the court of St James. An alternative to the increasingly bustling Mayfair.
The majority of whom had their main country seats in mansions and castle's spread throughout the country. Prior to this Piccadilly, St James and Mayfair were the area of such opulent palaces for high ranking senior titled members of the Aristocracy and Minor Royalty, such as Burlington House & Devonshire House.
You rightly point out that Belgravia has long since lost its charm as Embassies, diplomatic offices and institutions bought up properties.
Together with foreign billionaires who bought Belgravia properties as a safe investment for their wealth, like Gold or similar investment that are seen as tangible. Unfortunately they rarely occupy them as places to live. Thus has sent prices through the stratosphere and has therefore kept out all but the extremely rich and has turned a beautiful London village into a sterile and almost lifeless place with only the gorgeous and unique mock Regency Stucco and charming squares to keep it alive. Hopefully one day London will reclaim itself and restrict these non resident investors from acquiring properties purely as a portfolio asset.

Interesting but too wobly ...pleade redo with a new camera with EIS & steady panning. Leant a lot from this but deserves better production.

Agreed. Shame as he gives some useful history to the development of Belgravia.
