Slick. A very practical solution by the looks of it for those whose layout and locomotives will suit. I love to see creative repurposing of technology. Thanks for sharing your know how.

Sweet setup, Jimmy! Having a rotary throttle makes a big difference when using phones.

This strikes me as an excellent solution, especially if you have an older model smartphone you're no longer using just sitting around looking for work! Nice!

Wow, SKilshare as an advertiser congrats, that is really amazing. I think you are the first MRR channel that I know about to get a major sponsor.

Jimmy, just noticed that the rotary knob I got had a push button switch that is linked to the direction switch. so on a switching layout all I need is the rotary knob in my hand rotate to speed up, then speed down push the button, then go the other way.

Great idea. I wonder if there are other controllers out there that will include buttons for emergency stop, lights, bell, etc.

You can't beat the feel of a rotary controller....coupled with DCC++EX, we have a winner!

    Yes!
Exactly what I want! And dead simple to do.
Only issue is I'll have to try a different splitter as here on Amazon Canada the one you used is $38! I'll try the $12 one I think.

Hey Jimmy .... You know when you look to your left as the patrons come up... stop it ! :-D When you add the list in post, it is not "beside" you, but actually a little in front of you. Look a little more 'up stage' vs looking straight 'back stage', it will look a lot better! (That is the only grip I have... the rest of your work is impeccable !!! keep it up!!! )

The TCS UWT-100 would work with DCC++EX although it would be significantly more expensive. Some people have also repurposed game controllers. And then there's the ESU MCII, which can run ED and has a big knob.

So here’s the next question - would a bluetooth volume knob work for this? That would save needing all the adapters and what not, and you could use any phone, tablet, etc you had laying around, download Engine Drive, connect to Bluetooth knob, put the phone on the charger in the corner, and take the knob with you anywhere.

That sounds like something I can learn to do. LOL
Thank you for showing this one. I like that the phone does not have to be the big expense one YEAH.
    GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖

Ah... a midi controller; looks like one, anyway. Wonder if that volume control is an absolute (0-127) or endless (picks up exactly were the setting was and doesn't have a left/right limit) encoder. Also, if it is midi, wonder what controllers could be adapted to run multiple trains each with their own CV settings.

Can a physical keypad also be used to select locomotives?

I’m curious, will model railroading evolve to radio control and battery powered locomotives like the drones? I would think this will have more control of the trains and the tracks will no longer be electrified. What are your thoughts?

That looks very interesting, I have got Engine Driver to work with a tablet and a Samsung S6 phone which I have had for years, the tablet is an Android OS and has a standard USB connector same as PC type, do you think this would work with the Rotary Knob as well ... so maybe a straight USB to USB splitter etc ..Regards John

Hey John. All you have to do is search for an OTG cable with your type of connection and you should be good to go. If I had to guess, your connector would be micro USB.

Great idea Jimmy. Do you know if this will work with an iPhone and WiThrottle?

    • @DIYDigitalRailroad

Unfortunately this relies on a feature that is unique to Engine driver. This is why I built it using a cheap phone.

      adding it to the list!

    • @woodalexander
      @woodalexander 2 роки тому +1

Yeah, probably. Aristo-Craft used to make those but DCC has been the standard for over 25 years now so no one is going to develop something that was obsolete in the 90's.
