A retool implies that you still have a core to continue working with, like in 2015. With an aging Marchand, underperforming McAvoy, Lindholm, Zacha, Coyle, Swayman (last 2 games aside), not sure what they will retool around.
Overall they are 50% and could draft better, but have many players who they drafted and are playing. We can point to 2015 and some picks in hind sight.... Sway, Carlo, Lohrei, McAvoy, Pasta, etc... I can argue Beecher and Freddy as 1sts not great.... Their NHL scouting and free agents is good. Trading away picks and losing players to FA with no return really hurts. Bill is due on future.
@ I agree with some of what you say and disagree with some as well. Pasta was selected before Sweeney got in there, and if you look at the rest of the group, there is no one that really stands out aside from Charlie Mac Charlie Mac does not have a great plus minus he’s never gonna be up there and goal score or assists and if you look at comps around the league he is drastically overpaid, and weighing on the overall budget. Then you add in campus and your team screwed your top. Two defenseman are eating up all your money and they do not produce like a number one pairing should at all my opinion, the drafting has been subpar at best.
We don’t have many prospects but I think Sweeney may have gotten a steal in loke johansson, he’s playing top pair in the CHL and his point totals are starting to climb, as much as plus minus is a weird stat he’s been great though in that regard, not to mention he’s playing 22-24 mins a night, and his teams number 2 in the country, he’s got a great coach which I think has been huge for his development, even Armstrong wanted one of his top prospects playing there. I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people
I don't think Lohrei will end up like Colin Miller. Miller had two really good attributes. He had a heavy slap shot and was a fast skater. I think Lohrei is a lot more dynamic and offensively minded. He's a great puck handler and pretty underated with his transitioning. I just think he's a young guy with a lot on his plate this year. When Hampus comes back I believe Lohrei will settle into his role a little more, finish the season strong and come back a top 4 D next year. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I believe in the kid
What Charlie said is what I thought back in November. They are better than this! Now? Nope. They are a one and done team for the playoffs at best. That’s the reality. Do we think they can beat FLA in 7 games? I don’t think so. Move guys out (not Marchand or Pasta) and get some draft choices or prospects. Do they want to build to win the Cup or not? Or is it about a couple of rounds at best of playoff revenues??!!??
Lohrei to wing- are you crazy?? That is a bad coach who is stuck in his own thoughts and stereotypes. I get Junior players who were miscoached, not communicated to, and I am dumbfounded by these coaches. Lohrei is a good defenseman who needs some coaching as he reaches his first 80 games in the NHL. Skill and creativity are by far harder to coach than grit and position.
If Montgomery Jacobs and his son Smithers Jacobs were serious about winning a championship and not just bulging the profit margins, they'd remove Sweeney and Neely who've had a decade to translate regular season success to a Cup but have failed to do so.
Well i can't say anything . But There right about federic if they can't resign him i know it sucks but u can get sometimg return. Now JT Miller isn't wouldnt mind having even u swap with Coyle n someone young n pick I'll do it. Same age but JT Miller will make difference. But if u wana get Petterson he's young 26 $11m well u have to include like a Carlo , Coyle and Geekie I'll do it with a pick. But we'll see what happens.
Lohrei is a baby in terms of NHL defenseman development. There are outliers, but I always thought that D-men matured/get it the latest. By 25YO he should be a hell of a player. Now McAvoy, unless he has been injured for the last 2 year, including this one, has regressed beyond what is acceptable for his paycheck. His hockey IQ has regressed quite a bit.
Start with Sweeney! GONE! Move Coyle, Carlo, Marchy, Zacha, and perhaps McAvoy if he doesn't start earning his fat salary! He's been mediocre at best the last 2 seasons. Blow it up before the trade deadline while these players have some trade value!
What you are seeing with the bruins is a team running on empty becsuse of YEARS of bad drafts, bad free agent signings, and a core that is no more. Their biggest weakness last year was scoring goals...so they go into the offseason with a ton of cap space and blow it on, wait for it, guys that can't score goals. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WILL THEY PLEASE FIRE CAM AND HIS MINI ME SWEENEY. The Swayman bungle or the Lindholm signing alone should be grounds for relief of duty.
Any notion that the Boston Bruins should be doing anything but at least trying some sort of re-tool is just ludicrous based on how this team has played for a calendar year now, how flawed their big club roster is and how truly terrible their prospect pool and farm system are This year’s Boston Bruins 8-14-1 vs playoff teams 3-6-1 in their last 10 games 24th in goal differential 22nd Penalty Killing 30th Powerplay 24th 5x5 scoring -One of the NHL’s worst Farm System for a decade running -The Bruins Farm System is currently ranked 30th to dead last and 32nd EVERYWHERE -Flawed big club roster that clearly lacks sufficient forward scoring talent while also having one of the lowest scoring D-Corps in the NHL -This year the Bruins have one of the worst 5x5 offenses and Power Plays in the NHL while they also have been basically .500 overall and well below .500 vs the NHL's playoff teams -Last year from January to May the Bruins were one of the worst 5x5 offensive teams in the NHL, they had one of the worst power plays and 5x5 offenses in the league, they played .500 overall and well below .500 vs playoff teams That’s a full calendar year of the Bruins showing everyone exactly who they are, which is a team that is in desperate need of an influx of talent, whether that talent comes from the draft, via trades or free agency Once you get past Lysell, Merkulov and Dean Letourneau the Bruins don’t have a single forward that projects as a Top 6 player and not a single one of those guys would hold much, if any, value to any other NHL GMs. Instead, all three would just be thrown in players in a larger types of deals right now Their next group of prospects at forward such as Farinacci, Duran, Spicer, Locmelis, Kuntar, Harrison, Pelosi, Walsh etc..., Each and every last one of those guys is a 3rd-7th round prospect that projects as low event, bottom 6 player, IF, they were to reach their ceilings and that’s a BIG IF At defense it’s even worse in terms of prospects for the Boston Bruins as there is nothing in PVD that’s ready to contribute at the NHL level in a full time role anytime soon And every single D- prospect the Bruins have in their minor league system overall is a late round, 4th-7th round draft pick that has a limited chance of even making it to the NHL based on historical NHL draft metrics before we even get into Don Sweeney's crap draft history in rounds 3-7 of the draft Don Sweeney. Well, he’s drafted a gaggle of d-men in rounds 3-7 since he became GM in 2015. Do you know who the NHL games played leader is drafted by Don Sweeney in the 3rd-7th round since 2015 on defense? Um, NO ONE Not a single d-man Don Sweeney has ever drafted in the 3rd-7th rounds has played a single NHL shift Do you know who the games played leader at forward is drafted by Don Sweeney in rounds 3-7? It’s Jacob Lauko and his lousy 89 games with Boston before moving on to MIIN So based on Don Sweeney’s own draft results in rounds 3-7, over 10 YEARS, it sure seems like we shouldn’t expect much from any forward or d-man Sweeney drafts in rounds 3-7. At the big club level they still lack a 1C because all Elias Lindholm is a good 2C, not a 1C Brad Marchand is a good player. At 36 he’s not a real NHL 1LW anymore, he's a 2LW Neither Brazeau nor Geekie are Top 6 players, yet both are playing wing in the Bruins Top 6 regularly Zacha is wing on his best day as he’s done nothing but fail as a Top 6 center in both New Jersey and here in Boston Charlie Coyle is a good, defense first 3C that has no business being a Top 6 anything and his 5 lousy assists on the year and his career playoff stats more than prove that The rest of the big club roster at forward is nothing but a bunch of bottom 6 players, some of which are adequate in their roles, others not so much and not one of them, a reliable scorer The Bruins still have a decent core and most of their defense is locked up and under contract for the most part for the next several years as is Jeremy Swayman If they could make a few decent hockey trades to add some assets at this year’s deadline, free up some Cap Space for next year and do well this upcoming off season, the Bruins could easily be Cup competitive again fairly quickly However, if the Jacobs actually let Don Sweeney piss away even more of this team’s future chasing what will clearly be yet another round playoff exit this Spring….. He should be sued for malpractice by this entire team’s fanbase Sweeney has had 10 years as GM and here are his accomplishments -8 of 9 years failed to win more than 1 playoff round & you know this year it’s going to be 9 of 10 years -ONE, lousy 2nd round series win in 10 years as GM, ONE!!! And that single one was back in 2019 -One of the NHL’s worst farm systems for a decade where it’s currently ranked 30th to 32nd and dead last in the league EVERYWHERE!!! -Cap Jail -Flawed big club roster that he spent $160M in free agent dollars on last off-season -Flawed big club roster that since January of 2024 (a calendar year now) has played .500 overall, well below .500 vs playoff teams while also having one of the NHL’s worst 5x5 offenses and power plays as well There is nothing about this year’s Bruins team that says they should “add” at the deadline Instead, the Bruins should be selling off some of their pieces in an effort to at least take a shot at a short-term re-tool but if they don’t do it now… That short-term re-tool is likely to turn into a 5-7+ year rebuild because this team needs an injection of talent desperately and they lack the resources internally to do much about it right now Also, let's not get stupid with ideas to fix this mess Elias Lindholm, Zadorov, Pasta, Hampus Lindhlolm, Marchand and McAvoy all have NTCs, make big money and have a lot of term left on their deals. They're not getting moved Coyle, Zacha and Carlo all have limited 8-10 team NTCs, so they could be moved if the right deals come along After that it's basically move Frederic and or Geekie (and what are those guys even worth) because who is going to give them anything for Koepke, Beecher, Wahlstorm, Mclaughlin, Wotherspoon, Osterle, Korpisalo, etc.. I guess there's also a path to trading Lohrei and Swayman as neither has an NTC/MMC (Swayman's doesn't kick in until 2026) But again, Lohrei is their only young Top 4 D-man and they have nothing in goal behind Swayman. Sorry both Dipietro and Bussi are 25 and 26 and both are either an RFA or UFA. They are not prospects or long term options for Boston in goal behind Jeremy Swayman That's the issue here as well in terms of a re-tool, they lack good assets to engage in one Which is why guys like Carlo, Zahca and Coyle need to be on the trade block and they have to consider a deal if it gets them a 1C, that would include Mason Lohrei going the other way as it's next to impossible to find a 1C and they don't have one in their crap farm system either At the end of the day letting Don Sweeney piss away even more of their assets this year won’t lead to a Cup this Spring. Instead, all that would do is empty the cupboard more and ensure that the Bruins are even that much further away from their next Stanley Cup Thus, it seems either engage in a short term rebuilding plan that begins now or just piss away more assets chasing their next playoff fail that will just put them that much farther away from being a real Stanley Cup competitor again
I love how Jacobs has to state that we’ve made the playoffs eight out of nine years or whatever it was OK well when did Patrice Bergeron and David Craigie and Zeno Chara retire or not get resigned? I mean, he had a fully loaded team that all he had to do was draft Rite just to balance the lines he couldn’t do that and now you see the results all of the old regime players are fading away and now you left with a Don Sweeney team he didn’t draft pasta he didn’t draftMasha OK he didn’t do any of that so good luck to you
Love the show guys, but you make it sound like a team has never gone through a rebuild and come out the other side. Teams that have won multiple cups, like Pitt, Chi, LA, Tampa, Detroit…all had to start at the bottom and knock on the door a few times to be consistent cup winners. Moreover, the teams that get to the promised land have 1Cs that can only be acquired in the top ten of a draft. There’s only one way to get there and it ain’t by doing a so-called retool, which people are failing or unwilling to define in terms of who gets traded for what. Unless you get a dumb team like the Leafs who have you a king’s ransom for Kessel, nothing short of a purposeful tank and trade will get you the 1C that is needed. This team was averaging a shot a game in the playoffs last year, so just making the playoffs is not the goal.
I fear this team is going to ruin Poitras. I don't think he's physically ready. My guess is if he stays up he'll be injured by his 20 game mark. He needs to get bigger and stronger. It's noticeable.....that assist the other night was very lucky, Vasivlesky plain missed knocking the pass away.
Charlie Coyle! Are you guys freaking kidding me seriously you think that Charlie Coyle is a leader of this team that he somehow gonna lead the Bruins I don’t know how bad it’s gotten in Boston lately. I’ve been out of there for 10 years now having spent 40 years there but talking like this about the Bruins is sacrament to meand I’m appalled.
You can’t win a Stanley Cup with a completely soft, defensive core and if they’re not soft, they can’t play at a high level at a fast pace and then you definitely can’t win. If you only have two or three forwards that can play in the playoffs. Everyone else is 1/ third or a fourth line player so no they can’t play in the playoffs.
Coyle doesn't even try
Bum
Only after upper management is fired.
A retool implies that you still have a core to continue working with, like in 2015.
With an aging Marchand, underperforming McAvoy, Lindholm, Zacha, Coyle, Swayman (last 2 games aside), not sure what they will retool around.
Success is allowing 40 plus shots in consecutive games?
I love Mick’s honesty!👍
Poitra is the only forward I have seen in this teams draft history that looks like a hockey player
Overall they are 50% and could draft better, but have many players who they drafted and are playing.
We can point to 2015 and some picks in hind sight.... Sway, Carlo, Lohrei, McAvoy, Pasta, etc... I can argue Beecher and Freddy as 1sts not great....

Hoping 2-3 years he can contribute.
@ should be good in 2 years I believe.
Didn’t Sway had a bad season pre Christmas last year also? Linus saved us last year before Christmas..
That's true, he was way better in the second half.
Sway came back from all star game and was crap for 1 month.
I don't think Lohrei will end up like Colin Miller. Miller had two really good attributes. He had a heavy slap shot and was a fast skater. I think Lohrei is a lot more dynamic and offensively minded. Joe “thinks he and Brad Marchand are friends” Haggerty. What’s Marchand’s jock smell like haggs?
Overhaul the team? That's like overhauling my wardrobe. I'm too old and it's too late.
Don't move Coyle?? Really?
Move Coyle useless
I think 5 million omg

Need top 6 forwards and another D
Just beat Tampa 6 - 2 and we are talking about a "rebuild" Are you people MENTAL ?!?

yah a management overhaul, then stop giving out nmc in contracts.

McAvoy can't be traded lol. It's in his contract. Thank sweeny for that

Any notion that the Boston Bruins should be doing anything but at least trying some sort of re-tool is just ludicrous based on how this team has played for a calendar year now, how flawed their big club roster is and how truly terrible their prospect pool and farm system are
This year’s Boston Bruins
8-14-1 vs playoff teams
3-6-1 in their last 10 games
24th in goal differential
22nd Penalty Killing
30th Powerplay
24th 5x5 scoring
-One of the NHL’s worst Farm System for a decade running
-The Bruins Farm System is currently ranked 30th to dead last and 32nd EVERYWHERE
-Flawed big club roster that clearly lacks sufficient forward scoring talent while also having one of the lowest scoring D-Corps in the NHL
-This year the Bruins have one of the worst 5x5 offenses and Power Plays in the NHL while they also have been basically .500 overall and well below .500 vs the NHL's playoff teams
-Last year from January to May the Bruins were one of the worst 5x5 offensive teams in the NHL, they had one of the worst power plays and 5x5 offenses in the league, they played .500 overall and well below .500 vs playoff teams
That’s a full calendar year of the Bruins showing everyone exactly who they are, which is a team that is in desperate need of an influx of talent, whether that talent comes from the draft, via trades or free agency
Once you get past Lysell, Merkulov and Dean Letourneau the Bruins don’t have a single forward that projects as a Top 6 player and not a single one of those guys would hold much, if any, value to any other NHL GMs. Instead, all three would just be thrown in players in a larger types of deals right now
Their next group of prospects at forward such as Farinacci, Duran, Spicer, Locmelis, Kuntar, Harrison, Pelosi, Walsh etc...,
Each and every last one of those guys is a 3rd-7th round prospect that projects as low event, bottom 6 player, IF, they were to reach their ceilings and that’s a BIG IF
At defense it’s even worse in terms of prospects for the Boston Bruins as there is nothing in PVD that’s ready to contribute at the NHL level in a full time role anytime soon
And every single D- prospect the Bruins have in their minor league system overall is a late round, 4th-7th round draft pick that has a limited chance of even making it to the NHL based on historical NHL draft metrics before we even get into Don Sweeney's crap draft history in rounds 3-7 of the draft
Don Sweeney. Well, he’s drafted a gaggle of d-men in rounds 3-7 since he became GM in 2015.
Do you know who the NHL games played leader is drafted by Don Sweeney in the 3rd-7th round since 2015 on defense? Um, NO ONE
Not a single d-man Don Sweeney has ever drafted in the 3rd-7th rounds has played a single NHL shift
Do you know who the games played leader at forward is drafted by Don Sweeney in rounds 3-7? It’s Jacob Lauko and his lousy 89 games with Boston before moving on to MIIN
So based on Don Sweeney’s own draft results in rounds 3-7, over 10 YEARS, it sure seems like we shouldn’t expect much from any forward or d-man Sweeney drafts in rounds 3-7.
At the big club level they still lack a 1C because all Elias Lindholm is a good 2C, not a 1C
Brad Marchand is a good player. At 36 he’s not a real NHL 1LW anymore, he's a 2LW
Neither Brazeau nor Geekie are Top 6 players, yet both are playing wing in the Bruins Top 6 regularly
Zacha is wing on his best day as he’s done nothing but fail as a Top 6 center in both New Jersey and here in Boston
Charlie Coyle is a good, defense first 3C that has no business being a Top 6 anything and his 5 lousy assists on the year and his career playoff stats more than prove that
The rest of the big club roster at forward is nothing but a bunch of bottom 6 players, some of which are adequate in their roles, others not so much and not one of them, a reliable scorer
The Bruins still have a decent core and most of their defense is locked up and under contract for the most part for the next several years as is Jeremy Swayman
If they could make a few decent hockey trades to add some assets at this year’s deadline, free up some Cap Space for next year and do well this upcoming off season, the Bruins could easily be Cup competitive again fairly quickly
However, if the Jacobs actually let Don Sweeney piss away even more of this team’s future chasing what will clearly be yet another round playoff exit this Spring….. He should be sued for malpractice by this entire team’s fanbase

-ONE, lousy 2nd round series win in 10 years as GM, ONE!!! And that single one was back in 2019
-One of the NHL’s worst farm systems for a decade where it’s currently ranked 30th to 32nd and dead last in the league EVERYWHERE!!!
-Cap Jail
-Flawed big club roster that he spent $160M in free agent dollars on last off-season
-Flawed big club roster that since January of 2024 (a calendar year now) has played .500 overall, well below .500 vs playoff teams while also having one of the NHL’s worst 5x5 offenses and power plays as well
There is nothing about this year’s Bruins team that says they should “add” at the deadline
Instead, the Bruins should be selling off some of their pieces in an effort to at least take a shot at a short-term re-tool but if they don’t do it now…
That short-term re-tool is likely to turn into a 5-7+ year rebuild because this team needs an injection of talent desperately and they lack the resources internally to do much about it right now
Also, let's not get stupid with ideas to fix this mess
Elias Lindholm, Zadorov, Pasta, Hampus Lindhlolm, Marchand and McAvoy all have NTCs, make big money and have a lot of term left on their deals. They're not getting moved
Coyle, Zacha and Carlo all have limited 8-10 team NTCs, so they could be moved if the right deals come along
After that it's basically move Frederic and or Geekie (and what are those guys even worth) because who is going to give them anything for Koepke, Beecher, Wahlstorm, Mclaughlin, Wotherspoon, Osterle, Korpisalo, etc..
