Hey I loved this video so much and you're incredibly motivating! I want to work as a deckhand in yachting but eventually want to join a research vessel. Any advice on how I could go into maritime research? I'm also a scuba diver. Please keep uploading content I'm so inspired

Thank you SO MUCH!!! Seriously, you are just the kind of person I am trying to reach, your message means a lot! I also got my start with passenger vessels. I began my journey onboard a large cruise line in the luxury jewelry store. I wasn't a fan of slinging diamonds everyday BUT, it was the first time I got to see what Deckhands, Mates, and Captains did and I was sold right away! I started networking and asking many questions, trying to figure out how to get my foot in the door as a inexperienced deckhand. I found a wonderful small Adventure Cruise Company, Uncruise, that hired Unlicensed Dekhands. And so it all began. I worked there and a couple of other ships but, the goal was always to eventually getting on a Research Vessel. I don't have yacht experience personally. I've heard great stories and horror stories. I think the trick is researching the yachts you're looking to work on. If there are yacht forums or FB pages? The boat world is truly small once you get to know it and everybody knows everybody is connected in some shape or form. Seek out people that have worked on the ships you are looking at and talk to them or read reviews they have. Uncruise Adventures is another great option for a new Deckhand. I learned so much there and met some of the greatest people you could ever have the pleasure of working with. Its like the Trader Joe's of the cruise Industry, just so cool! Once you get the experience and some credentials under your belt, then it would be time to start applying to research vessels. I hope that helps and if you have any more questions do not hesitate to reach out. I love responding to these questions, anything to get more passionate people out on the water, I'm all in!!! And, you've totally inspired me to do an "Origins" episode where I describe my Mariner Journey. Thanks Danela!!!!

Just come across your video searching for live on board science vessels, I'm interviewing for my first maritime job as a geophysical engineer (maintenance) 😀 your video has added to the hype I am trying to suppress incase I don't get the job!! Should I do get the job, what items should I bring aboard, what can I expect and what are some important tips for first timers, did you have any trouble in your first voyage?

    • @LarkinBohn

Hi! Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes, working on a science vessel is incredible! Fascinating science and the coolest co-workers you could ask for!
What should you do to get the job? Be honest with them about why you want to work with them, enthusiastic about being apart of a team doing this type of work, both involve a little research on your part. Every ship I’ve worked for I had my eye on for awhile. Which means I had things I like that the ship had done and could talk about during the interview. It’s important for them to know why you are a good fit for that vessel in particular.
What should you bring aboard? Each vessel is different on what they provide. This is something you’ll have to ask the ship. They will tell you what you need but, not always everything. If there is a FB group for the vessel, that is a great resource to reach out to current crew members for tips on what to bring and what to expect.
Important tips for first timers? Be friendly, a good team player, and helpful. You work, live, eat and play with these people everyday for months at a time. It is crucial you be patient with yourself and your fellow crew members. It is an extremely dynamic work environment, very rewarding but, definitely tough stuff sometimes. Remember that everyone has “off days” and sharing a laugh or a helping hand on those rough days can make all the difference for that sailor. Believe me, when you have an off day, nine times out of ten, someone will do the same for you. Sailors are some of my favorite people in the work and I think this attitude is a big reason why:)
Did I have trouble my first voyage? Don’t be too cool for sea-sick pills, you want to be on your A-Game for your new job and spending most of your shift in the bathroom is no way to make a good first impression. I didn’t suffer because I took pills at first, then let my body adjust, it will:) Also, pace yourself. Long days in the sun can be a lot at first. And lastly, go easy on yourself. You’re going to be receiving a lot of information the first month. Depending on the size of the ship, not getting lost might be a victory in itself. Just know, you’re not going to get it all right the first time through everything but, you’ll get a little better everyday. Before you know it, you’ll be showing the new person around :)
Best of luck and please let me know how it goes!!

Hi, 30f looking for a career change and became interested in maritime especially on research vessels. I live in Seattle so can attend the Seattle Maritime Academy and join the crews on the UW research vessels. I see you’re on a UNOLS ship here, what would you recommend to improve my prospects to be part of a research vessel crew?

You still killin it!! Outstanding. Very very interesting. I look forward to your videos.
Do you think you could help a 51 year old fat guy with a bad attitude get a job on the sea? No? Well I understand. Thanks anyway.
I hate that your sister and I parted ways. I always have and still do think the world of her. She was always a special person who I enjoyed helping out.
You take care and be careful living your awesome life!!

Hey MStevacek! It was a long road😃 O started on cruise ships as an Unlicensed Deckhand. Built up my seadays and credentials then applied. I went to the University of Hawaii website, found the Port Captains email and reached out to see if they were hiring. Do you already work on boats?

Thanks for the comment!!😃😃 I began my search with looking up University’s that have a research vessel. Usually these are near the coast. Maine, Washington, Hawaii to name a few. Find the Port Captains email or a “Career/Jobs” link somewhere on the website. That’s what I did. When I first contacted the schools I didn’t have the requirements for the position I wanted. So, I went out, took a few courses, got some more sea time under my belt then came back and got the job :) Good luck out there, it’s a lot of fun!!
