Master Lighting for Drama with '24' Cinematographer Rodney Charters ASC - Episode 1

This is the first episode of a new lighting tutorial series with esteemed cinematographer Rodney Charters ASC. Charters is a master of his craft and is best known for his work as cinematographer on series like 24, Shameless, Magnum, P.I., The Last Ship, The Shannara Chronicles and Dallas, as well as movies like Going in Style. His on-set team for the project include John ‘Biggles’ Higgins as lighting consultant, gaffer Elena Armellini and electrician Joe Kennedy.
In this episode, we learn how to light a domestic scene at a family dinner table in a way that looks natural. Watch how Charters and Higgins and their team use lighting to create an atmosphere that helps the emotional narrative of the story.
In this scene, three types of Nanlux and Nanlite lights are used. The powerful Evoke 2400B LED spotlight outside simulates sunset light naturally pouring into the room. An Evoke 1200B shines onto an 8×8 reflector to enhance the illumination of the outdoor environment. In the interior three Forza 60C LED spotlights are set from different angles, creating horizontal patterns of light on the walls that simulate natural reflections. Hanging over the dining table there are several tube lights - a PavoSlim 240C and a PavoTube II 30XR hanging over the dining table. There is also a PavoBulb 10C LED bulb installed above the windowsill. Each light is carefully placed to enrich the visual composition and make the scene appear natural.
