This is an unbelievable achievement Dani. You've crafted a visual masterpiece of your own to compliment Kamitani's beautiful work, but its your reading of the manga that feels even more special. Thank you for sharing your insightful exploration: as a big fan of Our Dreams at Dusk it genuinely touched me, and helped me see a favourite in brand new lights.

The manga and anime communities on UA-cam are incredibly fortunate to have you in this space, Dani. Much like Kamatani, you're also putting yourself out there by discussing the daily struggles of many in the LGBTQ+ community and bringing your own personal analysis and insight to these works is refreshing and so important for the Anitube community. Not to mention the insane amount of work you put into your videos through your editing. Your words and editing convey just how much you care about this story and the themes they represent, it's palpable when watching. Another unbelievable and masterfully crafted video.

Our dreams at dusk is my favorite manga ever, having read over 100+ stories this one speaks the most to me. its a masterpiece in writing and art. it really shows like struggles of being lgbt+ without "fetishizing" homoromantic relationships. (using fetishizing loosely, since there are alot mangas that dont fetishize it) it doesnt necessarily focus on the romanic aspect, rather it follows the journey of different kinds of characters having to deal with struggles we go through while still showing the audience we're just like everyone else.

    • @linesinmotion
      @linesinmotion  3 роки тому +53

100% agree, its a breath of fresh air to read a story that allowed lgbt characters in its story to breathe and just *be*. Not necessarily just about romance, but seeing their daily lives and the struggles they also face, such s beautiful story!

yeah our dreams at dusk is the one manga that managed to actually make me cry and tear up, mainly cause its relateable, realistic and just kinda tragic and melancholy because of its relatability and realism, its clear about its themes and ideals and is beautiful in a mysterious way, despite it being very grounded (well except for nowhere/anonymous, but thats kinda their whole character, they're a magic ace icon and i love them) it doesnt focus on romance, it doesnt focus on the sex, it focuses on basic life as a lgbtqi+ person and how frightning every day can be when you just live your life, how who you think are friends and allies can be assholes and jerks behind your back, how your family might not accept you just because of who you are, how complicated life can be when your different. everyday can be a struggle, but it shows that if you have the right people by your side and if you seek out change and accept yourself, even though everyday is a battle you'll be able to make it through, with the help of others

This could've easily been a quick analysis of just the manga and it's beautiful metaphors, but the lengths you went through of adding historical context and mentioning the contributions of past manga artists was just the icing on the cake for my nerdy art heart! Great job and I'm glad this manga is getting some well crafted love like your video to being some more eyes and hearts to it!

Our Dreams At Dusk is just a masterpiece of a manga that explores the personalities and complex thought processes of the characters. This is portrayed so well with the art and symbolism. It's like you can feel the emotions that the characters experience in between the pages. Its just amazing.

This manga is still somewhat under the radar mainly because it’s not the “conventional” homosexual themed manga like yaoi/yuri which usually involve a certain degree of abusive/toxic relationships and to an extent flat out harassment and non-consensual stuff. That’s why when I read this manga, I can somehow relate with the characters especially the mc because I myself isolated from my former friends after I graduated from university. I was in the closet long enough until almost the end of my undergrad years, someone managed to find out I’m bisexual. I was so overwhelmed because this person told everyone else that I literally shut down throughout the year 2020. To justify why I did that was because my country isn’t open about this lgbtq+, so I have always been cautious about my expression. However, now things changed a little bit. I still sense the hostility from them but yeah I can say this manga affects me in a way that I push myself to be who I am to people who’re not accepting of my sexuality :)

Yeah, Japan and a few other countries have definitely made it so as GL and BL in and of themselves are genres separate from "Romance", there's most definitely a lot of bad takes within both categories, but thankfully even over these past 5 years alone, there have been a lot more nuanced stories that aren't framed in such a fetished light. But Our Dreams at Dusk is definitely an odd one out for the reasons you mentioned!
I'm so sorry to hear about your situation, I can't imagine have heartbreaking and scary that must have been, but I'm glad this manga is able to help in whatever way it can - it most definitely did the same for me too!

It discussed the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community and didn't try to fetishsize anyone! The mangaka treated LGBTQ people just like any normal human being in this manga! I'm so glad ODAD is getting the attention it deserves because it's still so underrated. Your video here about it is so beautiful and really put into words what I was feeling when I was reading it.
I first bought this manga for my sister, who's lesbian, since she asked if there are any manga like this around (where LGBT+ just be and living their lives). Then I began reading it once I discovered I'm asexual, and she told me there is a character of that side in the manga. The book was really thought out, and you can feel all of the emotions from the characters and the world around them. One of my top series to this day.

Honestly, the first time I read this manga I was so confused because I hadn't read a manga/comic with this kind of narrative, so I think I didn't get all the metaphors and the feelings they try to express but I really loved it. I quickly become one of my faves mangas of whole time ㅜㅜ I think I have to re-read it because now I'm more used to the visual metaphors (thanks to The Horizon and Annarasumanara).

The water metaphor is also a running one in Kamatani’s works, particularly used to represent depression and that same isolation in Nabari no Ou. I’m also now thinking of how the space metaphor in Shounen Note may also represent the cast’s neurodivergencies, like Yutaka’s implied autism. Fantastic work!

It is a lot of times the most beautiful things that are overlooked or scorned just because they are unusual or unknown. It's videos like these that help fight the heteronormative rules set by society just because people can't accept that someone among them is different. I recognize myself as a transgender male, and when I opened up to my mother about this, I had hoped she wasn't lying when she said she supported the LGBTQ+ community. But the thing is, she doesn't believe me. It is common for a person to say that they acknowledge it, as long as it happens to a stranger. But when it's someone close to them, it's like you're telling them you're a vampire. They just won't believe you. Your interpretations and theories really keep me wanting to persist and come up victorious. Keep up the good work!

It'd be nice to see you talk about Ikuhara as his works cover similar themes to that of the ones tackled by the Year 24 group.
I'd prefer you talk about Revolutionary Girl Utena first. Like his other works, it uses an absurd amount of metaphors & symbolism. Utena tackles themes such as gender norms, heteronormativity, societal structures and a bunch more. It's just so good.
there's also Penguindrum, another work by Ikuhara that i'd like you to cover but since you like Our Dreams at Dusk, i thought Utena would be much down your alley.

I've read this manga so many times, every time I cried through multiple passages, and this video brought tears in my eyes as well - that's just how emotionally impactful this masterpiece is to me. Your editing and visuals, along with how you presented your thoughts and reflexions, are themselves a beautiful hommage to Kamatani's style and work.
I am at a place where I finally can explore and express myself relatively freely, but I am still questioning about a lot of things. Yet, in some situations, I am unable to voice these things out because of my fear of being "found out" by my family and relatives. Sometimes, and it was especially the case when I was a teenager still living with my parents and siblings, I am just terrified to the point if being paralysed by this prospect. Even thinking about those matters during the day was out of the question: I was the perfect daughter, the model student, the nice and sociable girl friendly to everyone. Only at night, surrounded by darkness, in the comfort of my bed, when I was sure everyone else was asleep, did I allow myself to contemplate thoughts such as "I don't think I am able to *ever* fall in love at all" or "girls are _kinda nice_ not gonna lie"- fueling those years of insomnia that let my parents so confused as to why it was so difficult for me to fall asleep, haha. Later, I was able to talk about those stuff on some online spaces, but it was, and it is still, difficult for me to get genuinely close to people, even when I find myself in places where I could in theory open myself without fear of being judged for who I am, whatever that means. It's tiring, but it became an automatism, to put up barriers around me as to not disappoint people I care about and be hurt in the process. Even when I want and proactively try to open up to someone, in the end, I find myself putting a distance between them and me without even thinking about it, withdrawing even more when people try to reach out to me. Yet, when it happens, I find myself strangely empty, not sad, not even reassured, only asking myself why it seems so easy for people to connect with each other, and since those ties seem so meaningful to everyone, how do I define myself in a world where I can't seem to be able to be a part of these connections? Do I even have to define myself around those criteria?
So when I randomly picked the first volume of "Éclat(s) d'âme" (the french title of "Our Dreams at Dusk", which can be translated both as "Shards of a soul" and "Light/brightness of a soul") just because I liked the cover, after skimming through the first chapter, I felt excited, mesmerised, overwhelmed, and ready to scream/cry right in the bookshop. No need to say that I immediately bought the two first tomes and religiously waited for the next ones to be published. It was actually the first manga I bought myself with my own money, as a young student who just started to earn money with her side job, and I had to read it in secret since I was still living with my family. I've always liked reading novels, comics and mangas, and even though at the time I've already read things dealing with identity and LGBTQ+ subjects, I've never read something that touched me so deeply and resonated so much with my struggles. I could find a little bit of myself in every character: Tasuku's fear of being discovered and his struggle to completely accept and acknowledge his attraction to people of the same sex; Tsubaki's varnish of perfection and the way he strives to be seen as "normal" as possible, even to the point of being sometimes hateful; Haruko's inner breakdown after the reaction of her parents towards the lesbian wedding screened on tv (something that I experienced first hand a mere four years prior to reading Our Dreams at Dusk for the first time, when gay marriage became legal in France and my father only comment on the matter was "they can do whatever they want, but it's not like it will ever count as _real_ marriage"); Misora's uncertainties and questionings; and Someone-san will to leave everything behind and distance themself without being tied to any kind of relationship or label, just being "someone", yet unable to entirely cut themself out of those connections since they can't avoid becoming a part of the life of the people around them, and at the same time they can't prevent some people to become part of their own life as well. It really feels like this manga was indeed telling a story where I could piece together shards of my own souls, and for that, it will always be something very precious and dear to me, and maybe the most impactful reading of my life.
Now, I moved to another country and left pretty much everything behind to start afresh, as I felt that staying where I was, remaining how I was, was simply suffocating. This geographical distance with the people I care for and who care for me but with whom I can't be really close to because of the reasons aforementioned gave me a degree of freedom I've never had and I could have never dreamed of before. I didn't completely cut ties with everyone though, I am still in contact with my family and some other relatives. But seeing how now I am at this age where some of the cousins I spent my childhood with and some of my highschool friends are getting married, my parents asking me more often about a potential boyfriend and when it would be "my turn", and even my little baby brother all grown up now and in a blissful relationship since three years with a girlfriend he adores lightly joking about the eternal single me, I feel more and more reluctant to talk with them, and the desire to either keep my distances even more or simply yell at them that I am "different" keeps growing. In those moments when I feel suffocated again, I go back to the volumes that I kept with me even when I moved oversea, and I feel ever so slightly relieved and understood, even when I still don't even fully understand myself.
Sorry for the very long comment, I just get very emotional whenever this manga is mentioned 😂 All in all, thank you for this wonderful and beautifully made video, I'm glad youtube recommended this channel, you have a new subscriber now, and I am planning on binge watching every single one of your videos ;)

Our Dreams At Dusk is my favorite manga ever!!! I am sooooo glad that you made a video about it! The moving visuals you created are breathtaking and the way you explained everything was perfect. I love this manga so much the visuals, the metaphors, symbolism, the characters, and the stories of all of them are so real. When I read this for the first time I was blown away how I was able to relate and feel the pain of every character, every volume make me cry because the experiences and emotions of the characters were so raw and I feel like this manga did an AMAZING job in portraying peoples experiences within the community. I've never seen any other story show LGBTQ+ experiences as perfect as Our Dreams At Dusk and I REALLY hope that someday this Manga, as well as the Mangaka, could get way more recognition because I think that WAY MORE people need to read this. Anyways, thank you so much for making this video I literally never see anyone talk about this masterpiece of a manga so thank you so much.

This was such an amazing documentary! With absolutely stellar production (and nifty animations), superb narration, and a poignant narrative that I've come to know and love from your channel, your exploration of the metaphors, themes, and ideals in Our Dreams at Dusk has been nothing but eye-opening, especially as a budding manga reader who has rarely read manga this groundbreaking in terms of representation.
The topic of Misora and the way they feel about needing a safe space in an environment that provided little to none of it hit a few soft spots in my heart (and was perhaps a touch too relatable), and I'm excited to see the theme of the crowbar in the manga, having only read the first few chapters of Our Dreams at Dusk myself :)

Your videos always make me want to re-read the mangas (because the mangas you've chosen so far are some of my favourites) because I never put that much thought into them. Not that I read them lightly, they wouldn't be my favourite if I did, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret them well. That's why I love your videos so much. They fill the holes that I didn't know existed in the way I read manga. So I want to read them again and do them and the mangakas justice. Yuhki Kamatani happens to be one of these mangakas, and I believe I suggested you did something with Shimanami Tasogare once, or perhaps I dreamt it. But this goes beyond my dreams, thank you so much for the hard work and the love you put into it.

a beautiful video as always! i was absolutely stunned when i read this manga the first time, it put words to my thoughts with beautiful imagery. there isn't a lot of lgbt+ related mangas especially when it captures it perfectly.
i loved every moment of your video and almost cried remembering when i read our dreams at dusk. i relate to you recording your voice overs at night and doing it quietly. i dont make videos but everytime i surf through lgbt+ reddit or draw relating to my struggles, i always do it cautiously. i already got outed to my siblings through social media. even if they know, they're mostly just treating it like nothing maybe asking a few questions. but i just cant bother answering if they wont understand.
