I am Hainanese living in Australia and speak a similar accent to your grandma, which in Hainanese is "boon shio quai". You however, I have detected a different accent which I make it out to be "eh quai". Somewhere along the line, you were influenced by your environment to speak differently. Despite this, your grandma could understand you; which is very heartwarming.
Oh dear!!!! This brings me back a lot of memories of my old neighborhood in Bangkok. We lived in residential area in the city. Our neighbors were speaking Hainanese within their families, but of course spoke Thai to us. The mother was always cooking and talking just like your Grandma. The families still live in the same area, however. Other than that 70 % were speaking Teochew, listened to Teochew songs on their radios. In the morning we would find Chinese Breadsticks, Chinese Congee, and Thai breakfast sold abundantly in the local market and on the streets. Writing about these things, I can clearly hear the sounds, smell the foods and visualize everything like it was right now. In Bangkok around the time I was growing up, we only heard Teochew and Hainanese. Later we heard Cantonese from Hongkong. I never knew what Mandarin sounded like until I went to Beijing.
They were speaking Hainanese mixed with Malay, Mandarin, and other dialects 😂 This is very common way of speaking in Singapore and Malaysia Not 'pandai' but it is 'oi' heh..
Your Hainanese is not perfect. Please learn from your grandmother. I learned Hainanese when I was young and still remember after 30 plus years. No opportunity to say any more. 😭😭😭😅💕🙏
My gifted son sent by the Lord Jesus Christ to my family is a Hainanese. He is a genius like LKY but unfortunately he cannot speak Hainanese dialect. Sad
提倡海南话,值得鼓励。

Interesting! Your hainanese accent, also your grandma’s, is pretty much similar to what my family speaks. We are in Thailand. 🙂
我也是海南人,也会讲海南话
