I flew Harriers for four years, including ship operations. The LSO tells you what spot on the deck to land on. Pilots always strive to be perfect, especially with carrier landings. This pilot might have missed his spot, slightly. Hence, the mildly disgusted shake of the head. As far as the "throw it down hard" comment about landings, we were taught to not "cushion" the landing. You want to get the aircraft through all the high velocity, hot exhaust gasses as quickly as you can.
what is "viffing?"
Bob Rosso viffing is an aerobatic maneuver that is used to rapidly bleed speed when an enemy aircraft is on your 6. They rotate the nozzles and let the other aircraft fly right by so they can get a missile or gun shot. Don’t know how practical it is in real world but it is possible.
Thnk you for your service.
What squadron was you in
Is the Harrier really needed in the mix of fighter aircraft? Maybe a better way to put it is.....maybe it was needed when it first entered service but is it needed now? And by extension is the F-35B needed? or is it a waste of national treasure?
Reduce your object render distance setting, u were getting FPS drops at the start!
T. Gaare - I believe you completely. For me, I just enjoyed the cockpit view of the eventual landing. I never witnessed this sort of view before on UA-cam or anywhere else. I'll look for more now. I had a friend once, not so long ago, that flew experimental aircraft at Moffet Field, when it was in use (not really anymore). I just loved, and miss now, talking with him.
Yes. When the fracturing charge detonates, the center section is blown clear and the sides push outward. The seat has a bar extending upward the push anything else out of the way. This allows a slightly quicker ejection than does jettisoning the canopy before firing the seat charge.
Fantastic footage with a quality camera. Visually just stunning and entertaining. A joy to watch.
Beautiful cockpit views!
That moment the pilot wasn't pleased with the landing...
That pattern on the canopy is the canopy fracturing charge. When the ejection sequence is initiated, an explosive charge is detonated to shatter the canopy and allow the pilot to actually eject through the broken transparency.
Now this plane gentlemen, is one amazing aircraft
Off the Kersarge LHD-3. I was staioned on the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and I used to hear the zoom-rumble of the AV-8s from below all the time. I'll tell you something, the cockpit of an AV-8B is TINY!!!
HOOYAH!

I completely forgot I was watching a Harrier video and was like...how is this jet hovering lol.
Viq LMAO
btw.read text
...It shows Capt. David Neely, an AV-8B Harrier Pilot assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 266 (Reinforced), 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), during a mission off the USS Kearsarge (LHD3), Mediterranean Sea, Mar. 28, 2013.
At the 03:10 mark, note the pilot shaking his head after the vertical landing: could be a gesture suggesting he might be unsatisfied about the way he got on the ship (rough, short, unbalanced).
Proud to see the great British design in operation. Tight operating area on that deck!
love the harrier...a great bird's eye view...thanks for the ride!
Harrier pilots 'cream of the crop' and rightly so!
excellent video.
is it just me or did it sound like the engine was nackered or surging? or do they all sound like that?
thank you for your service
Thanks for sharing this... amazing cam view & sounds. Fighter pilot - my dream job
The "pattern" is actually an explosive which is detonated milliseconds before ejection. It stops the pilot using his helmet to punch through the canopy.
Popping tends to be an audio artifact of such a loud noise. The lower pitched whine is probably transmitted through the mount. When he's on deck it sounds more natural because it's more in the range of the mic.
these pilots never cease to amaze me...landing on an aircraft carrier is very difficult!
Thanks for posting this
Awesome video! Why is he turning his head, like he is unsatisfied with his landing at 3:09?
i was thinking the same thing.
AIRBORNE916 My guess is that he was not happy with the amount of side to side swaying on coming in for the landing. His approach was starting to become stabilized. Just a guess on my part, but I could be way off.
Thomas Freundl Yeah, thats possible. I thought his touch down was too rough, but who knows. Anyway...he is a lucky man. :-)
If you watch enough of the vertical landings there all tend to throw it down hard at the end.
Thomas Freundl You are right. Who knows, what happened and made him turning his head. :-)
@spyker...its det-cord. Shatters the glass during ejection in case you have to eject while hovering.
It's explosive material. Rather than the canopy having jets to push it away from the aircraft during an ejection, it instead just blows it into bits. I asked the same thing a year or two ago myself.
Amagzine how the pilot makes it looks so easy.
Landing a Jet like that must be a freaking Rush everytime ;) Harrier Jocks forever. F*** the F-35B!
I like how the pilot shook his head right after touchdown... as if to be thinking... "wow...I cannot believe I just pulled that off!!!!"
***** its a Joke dude... grasp it....
Very interesting to see how he works with his left hand during landing
There's nothing cooler than the yellow dude pointing towards the end of the runway (and the sea)
what a beautiful jet sound this aircraft have
What an awesome plane! Is that buzz saw noise the engine? If so, it sounds like an MD-80!
Wow.absolutley brilliant
You see that head shake? That's a perfectionist at work. Pilots are always their own worst critics.
It's so weird how much that reminds me of what it's like to land a heli after seeing him do a bit of fixed wing
What a cramped cockpit! Holy crap!
Kapitalny dźwięk!!!
Awesome.. Looking forward to more vids!
I would love to fly one over Mecca with some gifts.
TheWhiplash007 I don't care.
TheWhiplash007 I just think islam sucks. If I have offended you, please let me know so I can offend you again
+LongDrivesAtNight
What a miserable life you must have, lost your aunt lately ?
No more homemade cookies ? Because I wish I could have some to soak your tears before I eat them
+LongDrivesAtNight Islam is not sucks, but you are sucks... I think both Allah and Jesus will cursed you....
Nice landing. ..why was he shaking his head after touch down though?
Thanks for this fantastic video. I think he must of been pissed off with someone on the deck.
Nice video
Cool!
I thought those had been decommissioned long ago.
Harriers have been around for a very long time what they've been trying to do is find a way to reduce the heat used to hover so u dont show up on enemy radar so badly, but i guess they found a solution and harriers are more reliable then other jets since there actually easier to land
감사합니다.
awsome video!
Nice video!
How do you get into the usaf if you're English.
Fantastic, awesome!
Good stuff, thx for the vid!
Just love the Harrier - such a shame it's out of service now :(
Andrew James AV-8Bs still in service.
he was shaking his head when landing ? maybe he thought he did do it better? seemed fine to me,there isn't much error with that aircraft blink and it will bite your head off!
que magnifico
A+ video
Wow very Cool...agree he didn't seem happy anyway Excelent video
Супер, настоящие мужики )
Super. real men)
Super cool
how long can a harrier fly verticaly? I mean before something breaks or does?
amazing stuff !
Fantastico!
that looks fun
EPIC POV!
interesting video a dream that is being realized
Awesome.
3:11 ....he's going "dammit!" lol
oorah!
fantastic cheers .
Very cool
He seems feel unhappy when landing.
could be the camera vibrating against the canopy.
why did he shake his head after he landed?
He didn't look real happy with his landing...... looked like he might have come up a bit short...... anyone know where his mark was?
great landing
Awesome!!!!
Amazing
That is bad ass as hell!!
Cool plane👍
At least he's still living
Awesome
omg that landing
Way cool!
This pilot of the F-35 is very good!!!
Nice!
Nice.
Thank U ^.^
In battlefield3 it's an F-35, not an Harrier ....
Must be weird landing a modern fighter jet like that.
The doers that make a difference!
isnt the Harrier a VTOL?
never mind
Dennis van der Wijst STOVL more commonly
JUST WOW!!
That my son teacher guy :D
Why did he shake his head?
That shit looks very complex!
cool man!!!!!!
Criminal that the British Government got rid of the Harrier.
Just another day at the office
BADASS
I want to be pilot, but now I'm sheepferd
Awesome plane. Getting old though and v/tol, well…..that never was needed.
Tell that to the pilot that landed on a merchant vessel after losing navigation and radio contact with the carrier or anyone that lives in the Falklands.
Harriers were the first V/STOL jets.
wow, the margins for error are so small.
Jump Jets R cool, so sad the ol's GR8 had to go @ RAF
