You'd think it would be the norm that movies don't go into production before a full and complete script has been locked and is ready but I for one can't wait in 10 years when they write a book about the insane production of the new Blade movie. Let's hope that James Gunn's DCU never reaches that level of complication.
For example, the years of meticulous preparation that Peter Jackson took with the Lord of The Rings trilogy. If modern day directors/producers/studios spent a quarter of the time preparing for movies the way they did, the happier we’d all be.
I really love the idea of focusing on scripts first. Imagine if Star Wars did this and didn’t announce ten Rey projects until they knew exactly what they wanted to do and how to do it.

I am almost irrationally excited for Supergirl, I have enormously high hopes for that one. Woman of Tomorrow is up there with All Star Superman and The Long Halloween as one of my favorite comics ever.

I honestly dont think its that messy. The events from the stuff Gunn has made are canon, its pretty simple. Its not like he'll be pulling events from Man of Steel or Shazam 2 😂
It’s messy in the sense that the stuff Gunn created for DC before had strong ties to the previous DCEU, particularly characters. It’s a little insulting to just ignore them now and move forward with what he personally liked. I didn’t love the Snyderverse or whatever, but this cherry picking leaves a bad taste. A clean reboot too to bottom would’ve been better.
@li-limandragon9287 The Suicide Squad in itself was a soft Reboot to the original and not a direct sequel which was stated prior to its release. I think it's perfectly reasonable to treat that and Peacemaker as loose canon

I don't think they're going to bring Captain Marvel back, for the simple reason that the actor keeps antagonizing studios and audiences online. He's a liability for his own franchise. If audiences don't like a movie, they may have just missed the point, sure. But it doesn't help to disrespect them, tell them they're studid. That's not how you treat anyone you want to like you.
I’m genuinely curious if Gunn’s got the ability to objectively vet any script that’s outside of his own wheelhouse. So far, his entire career as a creative linchpin has been contingent on bundling up chuckling, smirking misfits with hearts of gold who are kind enough to soft-pitch dialogue at each other for the sake of smacking witty one-liners out of the park (before coming together for some serious reveal about their spotty pasts). It’s good stuff, and its impact on the MCU can’t be understated. But after Peacemaker and the trailer for CC, it’s feeling like he’s just not interested or capable in telling a story about ONE character and their journey, which is exactly where the last DCU got hamstrung. We’ll see, but it already feels like the simple premise of “make one good movie, THEN plan the next two” is out the damn window, and I don’t think the genre is healthy enough to absorb more conceptual over-saturation.
Well, I would guess Superman, the first feature film coming out this summer, which he wrote and directed, should answer some of those questions. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
It's a movie studio, my friend. They don't make one movie every three years, they work on many movies at one time to release them constantly. I don't know why you think this studio should work differently. If you want to see Gunn do a movie about a single protagonist, watch Super (2010).
That’s only been his career in mainstream media, his older movies are nothing like that. You obviously don’t actually know a lot about Gunn but are pretending too. He’s gonna defy expectations and make a shit Ton of money just like he did with guardians of the galaxy.
That's a fair concern I feel but also like Gunn likes movies and likes a lot of movies that aren't in his distinctive style I'm sure. It's a bit like asking "could scorsese appreciate Spielberg" they both have distinctive styles but a good movie is a good movie.

So he has already turned the Superman movie into more of an assemble cast that features a Justice League team. Which isn’t helping with the concerns. It seems to me he is rushing into the universe just as much, and possibly even more then the previous universe.
MCU can still at least put out stuff that’s good, Wolverine and Deadpool, X-Men 97 Agatha etc. The last good Star Wars thing was Andor. Gunn has the biggest up hill battle.

I'm excited for the DCU because Gunn said storytelling is going to be the main focus. Cameos are cool but I would like a good story to accompany it and Marvel just can't deliver on that. I'm hoping the DCU is good it's the superhero genre's only hope. Batman can't carry it forever.
And yet the first series is coming out in December, Superman is in theaters in July, Peacemaker season 2 is done filming and comes out in August, the HBO series Lanterns is already in production, and Supergirl starts filming in January and hits theaters in June 2026. All of this won't mean much if the tone of the whole DCU is as silly as Peacemaker was (which worked for that show but got pretty stale by the end tbh), and if the brand of comedy is just going to be "people bickering about dumb crap" then count me out.
It's messy because he didn't want to fire any of his friends...that's the problem. He could have easily just scrapped everything from the past and hit the restart button. But, instead, he wanted to keep his friends who were casted, in the same roles. In a way I don't mind because I think Viola Davis is a great Amanda Waller. Probably would have been easier just to start over. That being said...I'm along for the ride and can't wait to see what is in store. I'm really excited for The Authority movie.
If he keeps anything from the DCEU, then I have zero interest in any future movies. The first thing in this new franchise (after a cartoon movie nobody really cares about) is a TV show, but not the whole TV show, just season 2? but you still have to watch season 1 and probably The Suicide Squad for it to fully make sense. This is so dumb. I'll pass on all of it.

In absolute fairness Gunn is the guy who made characters like Guardians, whom only the biggest Marvel comic nerds would know about, household names and some of the most popular characters Marvel have now. He’s antithesis to someone like Brian Singer who hated the X-Men comics and didn’t give a single crap for accuracy. With Snyder I genuinely think he was good at getting the look of the characters right, but not their actions.

Comic accuracy is one thing, but understanding and translating the core of the character is another, which is what Gunn is aiming to do, and Snyder wasn't. But then again, Snyder's intentions were always reinterpretation and he did a pretty good job at that. Ten years have passed, people grew up, and the world is a little better for it.

What's confusing? Peacemaker season 1 is canon except for the JL cameo. Everything thats covered in story from Creature Commandos on is canon. I don't see how that could be any clearer. And Creature Commandos is coming out first because he had already finished writing it as a Peacemaker spinoff before he got the job to head DC Studios. I don't really see why it matters that an animated show is coming before Superman. It's just like a prologue to the DCU.
@Hockeyhobo89 No, because anything a person really needs to know is already explained in the Peacemaker season 1 story, and will be further explained in Peacemaker season 2 moving forward. Just think of it as 2 separate parallel universes that have some shared events. Most events that happened in Peacemaker in the DCEU timeline will also have happened in the DCU timeline.
Peacemaker is canon... so The Suicide Squad is canon... which has Margo Robbie Harley Quinn... so she's canon... but she's from Suicide Squad, but that can't be canon because it features or references members and plots of the DCEU... or is Suicide canon except for JLA just like Peacemaker season 1??? The season 2 previously on should show a recap of season 1. But then at the end when it recaps the last bit. It shows them leaving the farm and the JL don’t show up. Or the DCU JL do instead.

Gunn has been all over the place on the DCU. flip flopping, lying, or being confusing. First he said the DCU was a reboot, then a soft reboot, then he said they'll take what works from the DCEU and drop the rest (proceeds to keep TSS, the worst performing DCEU film). He also said he won't just take his own characters and fire everyone else (which is what he did), and it won't be the Gunnverse (which it is). He lied about Affleck wanting to direct a DCU film. He said Blue Beetle is the first character but not the first film (WTF?). CC is the first film but canon starts with Superman, but then it starts with CC. Then the whole debacle of TSS and Peacemaker S1 canon are canon, kind of, but not totally, but parts of them, but they are canon, no wait it's almost everything but that JL scene which we will deal with. Gunn is pulling the DCU out of his butt daily. And then you have the cheap suits from Party City and that horrible first release photo. Starting the (mostly) new universe with an R rated cartoon featuring a character that kills and eats children. And then the focus on obscure characters that most people never heard of while trying to build a new universe and simultaneously repair a heavily damaged brand and win back audiences that have walked away from DC films. No wonder the board of directors and investors are upset.

If you're referring to the other characters in the movie, based on the heroes selected, I think they're mainly there to show it's a universe where heroes have already existed for a long time, and to contrast how Superman is different from the status quo.

Cannon is silly. Why do people care about it so much? I don't understand the need to have all of this stuff connect. Some of these characters are 80+ years old. They've been in 1000s of comicbooks written and drawn by 100s of artists. Good independent stories should be way more important than cannon. Tell good stories!

No, he announced a line-up of projects that were going into development/being developed. Part of the development process is writing the script. Since that time, he has finished writing and filming Superman, wrote and filmed an entire season of Peacemaker. The entire season of Lanterns is written and in pre-production, and the Supergirl script is done and filming starts in January. Was there a particular script you were waiting to be completed?
To be fair, even at the time he said that he wasn’t going to go into production on projects until he had scripts that he felt confident in. So that would explain projects like Waller being delayed and projects like lanterns coming out quicker. And if that’s genuinely the reason then I wholeheartedly support it.

The way how it sounds to be would the this: Creature Commandos, Peacemaker 2, Waller, Paradise Lost, Lanterns, Supergirl would be prequels Superman is the true start Brave and the Bold happens in Modern day Justice League is the endgame for Gods and Monsters
Gunn said the events of Creature Commandos happen a few months before the events of Superman, and Peacemaker season 2 occurs after Superman. I consider Creature Commandos to be like a prologue and Superman the main start.
I’d be more on board with Gunn’s DCU if Pattinson was Batman. And no it is not too “grounded”. We’ve gotten enough grounded Batman movies already we can move on. Pattinson said in an interview he definitely wants to do a supernatural story and hinted at being interested in a larger dc universe. The worlds feeling different is the whole point of Batman and Superman meeting. Plus by only sticking to grounded stories, you essentially lock out over 2/3 of Batman’s mythos making the stories more one note and have less variety. Clearly Gunn is interested because he tried to fold him in when he first got put in charge. Matt reeves isn’t going to make Batman movies forever. Once he wraps up with Batman part 3, you could get someone else to make a Batman movie or a world’s finest movie. Pattinson and corenswet’s versions of the characters are both young into their superhero careers and are in a similar age range. And the end of the Batman could be a great thematic way to fold in Superman. Pattinson is likely interested, Gunn is interested in doing it, Matt reeves is the only one who isn’t. But his tenure on Batman will be done by part 3.
It's not going to happen for numerous reasons. We're getting a different Batman in the DCU, and I'm fine with that. Let Reeves do his thing and the DCU do its thing. Plus, I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest Pattinson wants to sign on for 10 more years in a big interconnected universe crossovers. Also, the people who insist they want Pattinson in the DCU have to realize that if it actually did happen, thousands of fans would immediately be blaming James Gunn for "destroying the Reeves verse" and "betraying and disrespecting Reeves' creative vision." Anyone who thinks that's not exactly what would happen haven't been paying attention. It'd be a PR nightmare.

He's Bruce's son AND he's already a trained assassin, so the whole perception of Batman taking in a minor who he's not related to and exposing him to danger that might seem questionable to a general audience doesn't come into play. I don't think they're going to bring Captain Marvel back, for the simple reason that the actor keeps antagonizing studios and audiences online. He's a liability for his own franchise. If audiences don't like a movie, they may have just missed the point, sure. But it doesn't help to disrespect them, tell them they're studid. That's not how you treat anyone you want to like you.
I’m genuinely curious if Gunn’s got the ability to objectively vet any script that’s outside of his own wheelhouse.
So far, his entire career as a creative linchpin has been contingent on bundling up chuckling, smirking misfits with hearts of gold who are kind enough to soft-pitch dialogue at each other for the sake of smacking witty one-liners out of the park (before coming together for some serious reveal about their spotty pasts).
It’s good stuff, and its impact on the MCU can’t be understated. But after Peacemaker and the trailer for CC, it’s feeling like he’s just not interested or capable in telling a story about ONE character and their journey, which is exactly where the last DCU got hamstrung.
We’ll see, but it already feels like the simple premise of “make one good movie, THEN plan the next two” is out the damn window, and I don’t think the genre is healthy enough to absorb more conceptual over-saturation.
Well, I would guess Superman, the first feature film coming out this summer, which he wrote and directed, should answer some of those questions. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
It's a movie studio, my friend. They don't make one movie every three years, they work on many movies at one time to release them constantly. I don't know why you think this studio should work differently. If you want to see Gunn do a movie about a single protagonist, watch Super (2010).

That's a fair concern I feel but also like Gunn likes movies and likes a lot of movies that aren't in his distinctive style I'm sure. It's a bit like asking "could scorsese appreciate Spielberg" they both have distinctive styles but a good movie is a good movie.

So he has already turned the Superman movie into more of an assemble cast that features a Justice League team. Which isn’t helping with the concerns. It seems to me he is rushing into the universe just as much, and possibly even more then the previous universe.
I mean it can't be more messy than the current MCU and Star Wars. And it certainly can't get messier than the DCEU.
MCU can still at least put out stuff that’s good, Wolverine and Deadpool, X-Men 97 Agatha etc. The last good Star Wars thing was Andor.

I'm excited for the DCU because Gunn said storytelling is going to be the main focus. Cameos are cool but I would like a good story to accompany it and Marvel just can't deliver on that. I'm hoping the DCU is good it's the superhero genre's only hope. Batman can't carry it forever.

All of this won't mean much if the tone of the whole DCU is as silly as Peacemaker was (which worked for that show but got pretty stale by the end tbh), and if the brand of comedy is just going to be "people bickering about dumb crap" then count me out.

It's messy because he didn't want to fire any of his friends...that's the problem. He could have easily just scrapped everything from the past and hit the restart button. But, instead, he wanted to keep his friends who were casted, in the same roles. In a way I don't mind because I think Viola Davis is a great Amanda Waller. Probably would have been easier just to start over. That being said...I'm along for the ride and can't wait to see what is in store. I'm really excited for The Authority movie.

In absolute fairness Gunn is the guy who made characters like Guardians, whom only the biggest Marvel comic nerds would know about, household names and some of the most popular characters Marvel have now.
He’s antithesis to someone like Brian Singer who hated the X-Men comics and didn’t give a single crap for accuracy.
With Snyder I genuinely think he was good at getting the look of the characters right, but not their actions.

Comic accuracy is one thing, but understanding and translating the core of the character is another, which is what Gunn is aiming to do, and Snyder wasn't. But then again, Snyder's intentions were always reinterpretation and he did a pretty good job at that. Instead of complaining that people aren't complaining about comic accuracy, just be happy people stopped doing that ya know? Ten years have passed, people grew up, and the world is a little better for it.

What's confusing? Peacemaker season 1 is canon except for the JL cameo. Everything thats covered in story from Creature Commandos on is canon. I don't see how that could be any clearer.
And Creature Commandos is coming out first because he had already finished writing it as a Peacemaker spinoff before he got the job to head DC Studios. I don't really see why it matters that an animated show is coming before Superman. It's just like a prologue to the DCU.

Just think of it as 2 separate parallel universes that have some shared events. Most events that happened in Peacemaker in the DCEU timeline will also have happened in the DCU timeline.

The season 2 previously on should show a recap of season 1. But then at the end when it recaps the last bit. It shows them leaving the farm and the JL don’t show up. Or the DCU JL do instead.

Gunn has been all over the place on the DCU. flip flopping, lying, or being confusing. First he said the DCU was a reboot, then a soft reboot, then he said they'll take what works from the DCEU and drop the rest (proceeds to keep TSS, the worst performing DCEU film). He also said he won't just take his own characters and fire everyone else (which is what he did), and it won't be the Gunnverse (which it is). He lied about Affleck wanting to direct a DCU film. He said Blue Beetle is the first character but not the first film (WTF?). CC is the first film but canon starts with Superman, but then it starts with CC. Then the whole debacle of TSS and Peacemaker S1 canon are canon, kind of, but not totally, but parts of them, but they are canon, no wait it's almost everything but that JL scene which we will deal with. Gunn is pulling the DCU out of his butt daily.
And then you have the cheap suits from Party City and that horrible first release photo. Starting the (mostly) new universe with an R rated cartoon featuring a character that kills and eats children. And then the focus on obscure characters that most people never heard of while trying to build a new universe and simultaneously repair a heavily damaged brand and win back audiences that have walked away from DC films.
No wonder the board of directors and investors are upset.

If you're referring to the other characters in the movie, based on the heroes selected, I think they're mainly there to show it's a universe where heroes have already existed for a long time, and to contrast how Superman is different from the status quo.

Cannon is silly. Why do people care about it so much? I don't understand the need to have all of this stuff connect. Some of these characters are 80+ years old. They've been in 1000s of comicbooks written and drawn by 100s of artists. Good independent stories should be way more important than cannon. Tell good stories!

No, he announced a line-up of projects that were going into development/being developed. Part of the development process is writing the script. Since that time, he has finished writing and filming Superman, wrote and filmed an entire season of Peacemaker. The entire season of Lanterns is written and in pre-production, and the Supergirl script is done and filming starts in January. Was there a particular script you were waiting to be completed?
To be fair, even at the time he said that he wasn’t going to go into production on projects until he had scripts that he felt confident in. So that would explain projects like Waller being delayed and projects like lanterns coming out quicker. And if that’s genuinely the reason then I wholeheartedly support it.
I mean, be didn't announce release dates which I think is the big thing. He's said basically that "These are what we are going to make, but we're not going to START making them until we have a good script"

Brave and the Bold happens in Modern day
Justice League is the endgame for Gods and Monsters
Gunn said the events of Creature Commandos happen a few months before the events of Superman, and Peacemaker season 2 occurs after Superman. I consider Creature Commandos to be like a prologue and Superman the main start.

I’d be more on board with Gunn’s DCU if Pattinson was Batman. And no it is not too “grounded”. We’ve gotten enough grounded Batman movies already we can move on. Pattinson said in an interview he definitely wants to do a supernatural story and hinted at being interested in a larger dc universe. The worlds feeling different is the whole point of Batman and Superman meeting. Plus by only sticking to grounded stories, you essentially lock out over 2/3 of Batman’s mythos making the stories more one note and have less variety. Clearly Gunn is interested because he tried to fold him in when he first got put in charge. Matt reeves isn’t going to make Batman movies forever. Once he wraps up with Batman part 3, you could get someone else to make a Batman movie or a world’s finest movie. Pattinson and corenswet’s versions of the characters are both young into their superhero careers and are in a similar age range. And the end of the Batman could be a great thematic way to fold in Superman. Pattinson is likely interested, Gunn is interested in doing it, Matt reeves is the only one who isn’t. But his tenure on Batman will be done by part 3.

It's not going to happen for numerous reasons. We're getting a different Batman in the DCU, and I'm fine with that. Let Reeves do his thing and the DCU do its thing. Plus, I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest Pattinson wants to sign on for 10 more years in a big interconnected universe crossovers.
Also, the people who insist they want Pattinson in the DCU have to realize that if it actually did happen, thousands of fans would immediately be blaming James Gunn for "destroying the Reeves verse" and "betraying and disrespecting Reeves' creative vision." Anyone who thinks that's not exactly what would happen haven't been paying attention. It'd be a PR nightmare.

He's Bruce's son AND he's already a trained assassin, so the whole perception of Batman taking in a minor who he's not related to and exposing him to danger that might seem questionable to a general audience doesn't come into play. I mean, it will have happened because there's Nightwing, but he'll already be older.
